He was out of ammo.
He was out of options.
His leg felt like it was on fire.
He felt like his heart was about to break free of his chest and it wasn't because he was worried about himself. All he could think about was his best friend.
Where was Doug? Had he been captured? Was he still alive?
Closing his eyes for a moment, Jem thought about last night. Or rather about one moment from the previous night.
He'd waited until the other boys were asleep before approaching Doug, who'd been camped out in the kitchen, checking his Mac-10. He hadn't said anything and neither had Doug. He'd just walked over, straddled Doug's thighs and kissed the man he'd killed for. Would willingly kill for again.
The kiss had been fierce, all teeth and dominating force from both parties, and Jem had enjoyed every second of it. When the kiss had ended, both him and Doug left panting for breath, he had rested his forehead against Doug's. "Alright," Jem had whispered, lips ghosting over Doug's. "Let's go."
"To Florida or wherever the fuck it is you wanna go, brother." Jem kissed Doug softly. Just a quick peck. "We do this job. We get the fuck outta here and never look back."
"You'll go with me?" Doug's surprise was written all over his face and Jem wasn't surprised. Not after he'd spouted all that bullshit before about Doug not being allowed to leave. "Really?"
"I can't let you go, Dougy," Jem replied, looking Doug in the eye. "Promised to take care of you, remember? Can't do that unless we're together."
"Jem…I…I don't know what to say…"
"How about that you love me." Kiss. "And that you won't leave me behind." Kiss. "That it'll be us against the world forever."
Doug chuckled, kissing back and smiling. "I love you." Kiss. "I'll never leave you." Kiss. "And it will always be us against the world. Forever and ever, amen."
Jem couldn't help but laugh and kiss Doug again and again. Everything would go smoothly tomorrow. They'd pull off the job and then he and Doug would leave. They'd get out while the getting was good. While they still had each other.
Jem came back to reality when the FBI guy yelled at him again.
He knew what his choices were.
Give himself up or go out in a blaze of glory.
He'd told Doug that he wouldn't go back to prison and he'd meant it.
Taking the Mac-10 in one hand and the 9mm in the other he called out that he was surrendering. Even with his injured leg he managed to stand, stepping around the mailbox and towards the cops, guns raised as though he were about to open fire.
The last thing he saw was Doug.
The man was just down the street. Eyes filled with fear. Watching the scene unfold while knowing what Jem had planned.
Jem thought a final iI love you/i before his world went black.
