The continuation to The Death Cure by James Dashner

*None of the characters are mine.*

Thomas felt a rush of cold wind sweep his feet. He sat up on his elbows and blinked as his eyes adjusted to the darkness. He let out a breath as he took in his surroundings. He was in one of the many small huts that Minho had built with the help of all the other immune refugees. None of them knew where they were, but none of them really cared. All they cared about was that they were safe. They were finally out of WICKED's reach, and far away from the Scorch and the cranks which inhabited.

Thomas suddenly felt something stir next to him. He turned to see Brenda rubbing her eyes.

"Hey…..you ok?" She asked.

"Yeah, I'm fine." Thomas responded with a half-smile.

"Alright" she said, unconvinced.

Brenda knew Thomas better than to believe he was actually fine, but after asking him endless times, she knew she'd have to wait for the honest answer. She lay back down next to him, and drifted off to sleep. Just as she suspected, Thomas was far from fine. The nightmare he had every night, just wouldn't go away. It would be the same one, and it'd replay itself at least twice a night.

It would start out as him walking in the forest near the huts. He would be looking for berries, or gathering firewood. Then he would see her. Teresa. Still as beautiful as the first time he saw her, but there was something different about her. A look in her eyes that he'd never seen before. Until now they'd always been filled with pain and worry, but no, this look was different. It made Thomas feel safe, like the final reassurance he needed to truly know that everything would be alright.

"Teresa!" he'd call out to her.

As soon as she'd see him, she'd smile and start to run towards him. Just as soon as she'd get close, the sky would turn a dark gray, and a clasp of thunder would boom around them. Thomas would desperately try to call to her once again, but no sound would come out. Teresa's face would fall, and just as quick, the earth would part in two and Teresa would fall into the empty abyss.

Thomas would wake up at the exact moment every time, with sweaty palms, and a racing heartbeat.

"What could it mean?" was his only thought.

Tom?

Thomas stilled. Even his heart slowed as he forced himself to listen.

Tom.

There it was again. He looked around, but then realized what it was. How could he ever forget? That voice, and the way it echoed. It wasn't coming from anywhere around him. It was coming from inside his head.

"Teresa!" he yelled as loudly as possible, in his thoughts.

Tom! Where are you?
