She's Far Far Away
Elizabeth's POV
Elizabeth sat on the wooden kitchen stool sipping some coffee in the middle of the night. Why you ask? Because her boyfriend didn't come home yet from his late night outing (again). For the past several hours she has been waiting for Aaron's return, like a loyal lover would do. Unfortunately, Aaron hasn't really been returning the favor. Not a night goes by without, Aaron bringing home a "lady" friend to show her "around the his bedroom".
Outside the front door there came a drunken call, "Liz, babe. Forgotz me keyz." A giggle and a moan accompanied Aaron's words.
Sighing, Elizabeth opened the door, tapping her foot impatiently. "You do know it's one in the morning and-" She stopped in mid-sentence. A girl was accompanying Aaron and wore a tank top two sizes too tight and a mini skirt that could also serve as a belt. By the looks of things, she was another stripper.
"Back off," the girl hissed and captured Aaron's lips in a heated kiss. They stumbled inside the house, desperately trying to strip each other down.
Still embracing each other, Aaron led them into the master bedroom, which was now just Aaron's room. Once or twice Aaron had tried to convince Elizabeth to move back into the master bedroom, but she politely turned down the offer and she had gotten a good beating for that one.
The couple left a trail of shed clothes like a snail. Aaron's loose white shirt was discarded. The girl's top and skirt were discarded leaving her in her skimpy bra and thongs. Aaron made sure to close the door behind him and Elizabeth could have sworn she heard the lock click shut. It disgusted Elizabeth because she was rocking a child in her arms.
That's when the cries of passion began…
"Oh babe… Oh! Just like that!"
"F-faster, h-h-harder!" You're going too slow."
"Oh yeah…"
"Yea- Oh baby! Like that! Mmmm…."
Tears of frustration fell down Elizabeth's cheeks. Why does he do this? I can't stand it anymore! He isn't taking this whole parenting thing seriously! She wiped away her tears. Elizabeth whispered to her baby, "After tonight we won't have to put up with this because we're leaving for good."
Elizabeth walked into the room she now lived in since Aaron took over the master bedroom. The room set a happy and cheerful mood as though it was unaware of the tortures that happened outside its doors. Her endless collection of posters and knickknacks were everywhere on the walls, in the closet, in the dresser, and arranged on her dresser. She couldn't believe she was going to be leaving her little room, but at least she could take her things with her.
Two big black suitcases were already sitting on the bed's newly made spread, patiently waiting to be filled with her possessions. The baby carrier was sitting net to them. She carefully put the sleeping boy into his carrier. Her poster were rolled up and stuffed into one of the suitcases along with the knickknacks all packed up nicely in her great grandmother's jewelry box. Elizabeth didn't have any jewelry, except that one sliver necklace with the diamond heart, studded with pearls that Aaron had gotten her for their fifth year of being a happy couple. When she had gotten it, it had sparkled radiantly especially the inscription, "This will always sparkle with our love."
Now the diamonds were dim and didn't sparkle like it used to. The pearls didn't shimmer in the light anymore. And the sliver chain was a dark depressing color.
Her clothes were the next to go and since she didn't have a closet filled completely with the latest fashion and trends it took very little time. Elizabeth put all the baby stuff in with her clothes. She took her suitcases outside. In the hallway she could still hear the two in the bedroom.
She scribbled down a note, stuffed it into an envelope, and walked out the door. Her car hummed to life as she turned the keys into the engine. The tears fell down her cheeks now freely. Elizabeth backed out of the drive and sped out of their little neighborhood into the empty freeway.
After an hour or two of driving she reached the hotel that she booked a reservation in days ago. It was already two thirty in the morning and her flight left at noon. She signed in at the front went to her room on the sixth floor. Elizabeth threw her purse onto the table, kicked off her shoes, and collapsed into the bed, crying her eyes out, cradling her child.
Suddenly she had the urge to drive all the way back home and fling herself into Aaron's arms, but she knew he wouldn't be there waiting for her. He was happy or as happy as a heartless jerk could be and that is all that matters. But she couldn't help herself to think of all the ways he had wronged her and their child.
After the whole saving Doc, Marc, and Anjali business was done, Aaron and Elizabeth became a happy couple. All throughout high school they were the picture of a perfect couple. In college they encountered a few difficulties, but it all turned out fine in the end. That all changed after they got their degrees.
They both got jobs and moved into the same house together. Soon they even had a baby boy named, Jason. It was all running smoothly until Marc invited them to a local pub. Elizabeth had turned down the offer, but Aaron excepted since he had a frustrating day at work and didn't feel like taking care of the baby that night. Their outings to that pub became more and more frequent. And Elizabeth rarely saw Aaron in a sober state. One day, Elizabeth was home alone talking to Anjali and they got on the subject of their boyfriends. Anjali asked Elizabeth where Aaron was and she responded without thinking with Marc. Then Anjali told her all about her dumping Marc because of his dangerous drinking habits and told her to do the same.
When Elizabeth voiced her concerns for her boyfriend's state he hit her. No a playful punch, but a slap across the cheek. Then that's when the beatings began. Then he told her to mind her own business. Once he even invited a guy friend over and they took pleasure in beating her together. She still had the giant bruise on her collar bone to prove it. The only reason she had put up with this for so long is for Jason's future. She did not want to bring up her child fatherless, but Aaron didn't provide her another option.
She wondered how long it would take for Aaron to realize she was gone and how he would react. He would probably throw a fit when he finds out she left him, but then go hunting around for the rent money, until he realizes he can't drink it up for two reasons. One he was now off his vacation so he can't wake up around noon everyday. Two his boss would probably fire him if he came to work drunk.
Jason began to cry and Elizabeth got up and rocked him to sleep. She smiled when she looked down at her son. He had his father's eyes, but her nose. Elizabeth saw that she made the right decision when she left, so Jason would not end up like his father if she had anything to say about it.
Elizabeth gently laid Jason down in his carrier and tucked his favorite plush dog toy under his small arm. She kissed his cheek and whispered, "Good night my darling. Later we won't ever be hurt again by Aaron because we are going far away to Georgia with Anjali."
Finally she went to bed. The last thought that rang through her mind was, "We have made it through phase one, but will I be able to part with Aaron forever?"
Aaron's POV
Aaron didn't wake up until around six in the morning. His hangover still lingered, but he was able to think more clearly than the past seven weeks. He was in a extremely happy today because yesterday he had been able to think straight enough and bought Elizabeth the most beautiful engagement ring she will ever see, but he had chickened out and then went out drinking with Marc again.
He was aware that he has been abusing his lover and his own child for the past several weeks, but he would make it up to them and make them an official family. It would take some convincing, but he knew Elizabeth loved him with all her heart and that nothing would make her happier than spending the rest of their days as husband and wife.
Elizabeth wasn't in the house and Aaron didn't have time to search the place thoroughly because his shift began in a couple minutes. He pulled out of the drive in his car and saw that Elizabeth's car wasn't parked in the driveway or the garage. That's strange… he thought.
Work for Aaron was a complete disaster. A couple of the girls he had sex with over his vacation followed him around like lost puppies and some even tried to seduce him. It made him realize how awful he must have appeared to the two people he cared for. During his lunch break, a couple of Elizabeth's friends that worked with him kept whispering about him behind his back. When he finally worked up enough courage to ask them what they were whispering about at the end of the day their eyes widened.
"You mean you didn't get the letter?"
"I thought you already knew."
"You mean she didn't tell you that she-"
All the other girls, stopped the girl in mid-sentence. The tallest one that was also the vice president of the company stepped up and glared Aaron in the eye. "If he doesn't know let's not ruin the surprise."
He didn't respond he just turned and ran to his car. The groups laughter followed him.
"Oh, he's in for a surprise alright."
Aaron didn't care about what they were saying all he wanted was to get home and propose to Elizabeth before his worst fears were realized. His car screeched to a halt in the driveway. He jumped out of the car his hair a mess and his tie undone.
He burst through the door. "Honey, I'm home!" he screeched. Elizabeth didn't answer him, Jason didn't even start crying from the sudden noise. No the house was so silent all you could hear was Aaron's heavy breathing. Aaron turned the living room upside down looking for any sign of Jason's toys that always seemed to litter the floors, but found none. There was an envelope on the kitchen counter addressed to him and he stuffed it into his pocket without a second thought. "Elizabeth! Jason! Come on, guys!" There was no sign of Elizabeth cooking anytime today or last night in the kitchen.
Elizabeth wasn't in the master bedroom or the guest room so that only left her room. He burst into her room and just stood there. All color was drained from his face. Aaron wore a look of complete utter horror. Elizabeth's room was empty.
Her dresser's drawers were opened revealing that they had been emptied. The closet was wide open and empty of any of her clothes. All of the walls showed that she had taken her posters of her beloved rock stars and boy bands with her. None of her knickknacks that you used to be able to find everywhere remained. Not even Elizabeth's distinct scent of vanilla and raspberries lingered in the air.
The room was empty of any signs of Elizabeth or his son, except her rocking chair and Jason's crib. Aaron sat down on the bed and pulled the letter out of his pocket. He pulled out the letter, but the envelope still felt full. It read:
Dear Aaron,
I hope you have an amazing rest of your life, but I really couldn't care less about what you do with your pitiful life. Because me and my son aren't in it. You aren't really perfect father material and would have made Jason choose the wrong choices just like you. I'm going to Georgia. Yeah, Georgia. It's miles away from you and the whores you have sex with.
Your EX-girlfriend,
Elizabeth
That sure did wake him up. He tossed the letter to the ground and ran out the door. Aaron was going to go out there and bring back the girl he loves.
