"On my way."
As soon as she opened that text, Rachel knew that everything was going to be okay.
She was about to marry the love of her life, all her family and friends were on the room supporting her, and more importantly, Quinn Fabray was on her way.
"Rachel, come on, we have to go in now." Her soon to be husband insisted; and she suddenly shuddered at the word... –husband– because something definitely didn't feel right about it.
"Quinn's on her way, Finn. Let's just wait a bit longer."
"But Rach…"
"No buts," she cut him off, anxious and exasperated. The sudden feeling of ache that settled on her stomach was making her want to throw up. "She said she would be here and I believe her. I'm not getting married without Quinn standing there by my side."
The ferocity in her words took the boy aback. Finn looked at her intently, half surprised and half hurt, but after a moment, he relented. "Fine. But we will give her five more minutes and that's it. If Quinn doesn't show up, we go and we get married without her, okay?"
Rachel wasn't really okay with that agreement, but Finn was already doing so much for her that, well, it was only fair. "Okay."
The brunette started pacing the room, exchanging her gaze between her phone and the door constantly.
Finn managed to find a seat in a corner and was talking animatedly with Mike and Rory. Brittany and Kurt were whispering about some magazine and Santana was curiously staring at Rachel.
The minutes kept moving forward, and when the stipulated time hit its mark, and the door didn't open, Rachel felt as if someone had walked all over her heart, pulled its strings and then smashed it into tiny pieces.
"Alright then… I guess she isn't going to make it." She signed sadly and looked at her phone once again, the last text "On my way" was screaming at her words that she couldn't quite comprehend. "Let's do this." Rachel smiled at Finn, but it didn't reach her eyes.
The boy smiled back brightly and took her hand on his, squeezing it tightly and pulling her towards the door.
"Wait!" Standing up quickly, her father Hiram and Burt Hummel positioned themselves in front of the couple to stop them from walking out of the room. Their mouths were hanging open but no one was really saying anything.
"Is there something going on?" Finn asked, completely clueless.
But Rachel knew better. She knew the look in her father's eyes. She knew that they didn't support the wedding or any of her decisions lately because it was killing her Broadway dream. Like Quinn, they only wanted the best for her, and Rachel's heart broke again in pieces when she realized that maybe, just maybe, they were right.
She turned to look at Finn with wide and conflicted eyes. Rachel tried to find some kind of reassurance in those orbs that always made her feel so secure, but instead of seeing what she was looking for, she didn't found anything at all. And suddenly, Rachel was internally panicking and feeling lost. She didn't know what to do, what to say, how to stop all the madness that she just realized that was going on. She wanted Quinn to hug her tightly like she had done just a few hours before. She wanted to feel as secure as she had felt when Quinn Fabray, even wearing a Cheerios uniform, had made her feel when she held Rachel close to her heart.
She looked down at her phone again and saw the bright text "On my Way" and just like that, she felt a bit better. Because Quinn was going to be there soon, and she was going to help her go through whatever it was that Rachel needed to go through.
Sue's phone started ringing out of nowhere, startling half the room. She excused herself and exited the room before picking up.
Finn squeezed her hand again.
"Well, what do you want to say?" Finn asked one more time; though, everybody in the room could tell that he was starting to get pissed.
"Kids, we don't think that…" Hiram started to say, but Finn cut him off.
"With all due respect, Mr. Berry, we are old enough to know what we want and…"
The doors opened suddenly and Rachel's hand fluttered into her chest at the thought of finally seeing Quinn. But her big smile fell as soon as she saw a very dismayed Sue Sylvester.
The sight of one of the strongest woman that Rachel has even met looking so broken, scared her to death. Sue barely cared enough for anyone to be looking like that. The only people she could react for, in such concerned and worried way, were currently in the room and…
Quinn.
"On my way."
"No…" the word escaped her lips before she could even stop herself. Her feet stumbled back and, if it weren't because Santana quickly wrapped her arms around her waist, Rachel would have fallen backwards in the moment.
"Sue? What's going on?" Will asked, worry taking over his features as he exchanged his gaze between the cheerleader coach and his students. "What happened?"
"It's Quinn..." The woman mumbled. "She just had a pretty bad car accident on her way over and they don't know if she's going to make it."
Just a second later, several gasp and sobs echoed around the room.
Santana's embrace tightened considerably in her waist, almost hurting her, but Rachel didn't care. All she really wanted to do was run away from the room, from her parents and friends, from Finn. All she really wanted was for Quinn to take her into her arms and never let her go.
But that couldn't happen now, because Quinn Fabray was in the hospital. Quinn Fabray was dying and it was all her fault, because Rachel has made her hurry up to get to her wedding on time.
A wedding that she didn't even wanted anymore.
"I have to go."
"What?" Santana released her without a second thought but Finn caught her wrist. "Where are you going? The wedding…?"
"Are you kidding me?" Rachel asked, the anger that she was feeling towards herself easily dropping from her mouth and into her words. "Quinn just had a freaking car accident because of this stupid wedding, because of us… of me… and you still want to get married?"
"Well, yeah I mean…"
"I DON'T WANT TO GET MARRIED!" She shouted, completely out of her feelings. "I just want to go to that hospital and see Quinn. I need to know that she's okay, I need to know that she'll come back to me because…"
"Come back to you?" Her fiancee asked, puzzled and hurt. "What the hell are you talking about, Rachel?"
"Now is not the time, Finn." The girl quickly answered, completely aware of all the people present in the room. "I have to go to the hospital."
"No." He pulled her wrist to make emphasis in his words. "I told you, it's now or never, remember?"
Rachel stared at him just for one second, locking eyes and only seeing her reflection in his. And the sight almost knocked her out of her mind. Because the girl looking back at her was certainly broken. It was the reflection of someone that just lost their most precious treasure… the love of their lives. And with just one look at Finn, Rachel knew that she wasn't feeling like that because of him.
No. It was Quinn. It had always been Quinn and she couldn't believe she was stupid enough to not pick up all the hints the blonde has been dropping her.
"When you were singing that song, you were singing it to Finn and only Finn… right?"
"Oh my God…" Rachel pulled her arm out of Finn's grip and felt the tears finally start running down her cheeks. Looking up at her soon to be ex boyfriend, she spoke the words that she was sure were going to hurt him, but that she couldn't regret saying. "It's never then… I'm sorry, Finn."
And with that, Rachel took off running towards the parking lot.
When she made it to the exist she realized that she has been stupid enough to left the room without actually taking any car keys. The brunette was thinking about a way to go back and tell her parents to take her to the hospital when Brittany and Santana stepped out of the building.
They stared at each other for a few seconds.
Brittany was crying non-stop and Santana was doing her best to hold back her tears. Rachel let her shoulder falls and opened her arms in time for Brittany to crash into them. They mutually tried to comfort the other but to not avail; finally pulling back, Santana patted Rachel's back and said. "Come on, I'll drive you there."
As they got into their car and started making their way towards the hospital, the only thought running through Rachel's mind was: "Hold on, Quinn. For me. For everyone who loves you. Fight for your life and wait for me because… I'm on my way."
