Chapter 1: The Brightest Freshmen In White Chapel High

It was another boring Friday night.

Sarah was upstairs watching Jane, Ethan's parents were out disco dancing, and Ethan and Benny were on the computer, eyes glued to their new game.

"So, have you gotten an e-mail yet?" Benny asked, pausing the game.

"No, not yet." Ethan replied, unplugging his controller.

"Do you think we actually did better than all of the other freshmen?"

Benny stood up to stretch.

"Of course!" Benny exclaimed.

"The closest thing we had to competition was Rory, and he didn't even apply for the statistic tournament!"

"What's the statistic tournament?" Asked a familiar female voice behind Ethan and Benny.

"Oh, h-hi Sarah," Ethan stammered, standing up.

"I-it's like a...a...

"It's a tournament for us freshmen." Benny cut in.

"All of the freshmen from three different schools, from three different towns, take a test to see who the two smartest freshmen are in each of the schools."

"The two students with the highest scores go on to compete against the other top freshmen in the neighboring towns."

"How come I've never heard of it?" Sarah asked, crossing her arms.

"It's new this year," replied Ethan.

"Benny and I entered a week ago, and still haven't gotten a reply."

Sarah giggled.

"Oh, don't worry, I'm sure BOTH of you are shoe-ins for that competition."

"Was that an insult?" Benny asked, simultaneous with Ethan's "Was that a compliment?"

"Yes and yes." Sarah said, laughing at the way Benny's face fell as Ethan's lit up.

"Don't worry you guys," Sarah continued.

"I'm sure you two beat out the other freshmen."

"Thanks for the vote of confidence, Sarah," Ethan began.

"But I think we would've gotten a reply by n-

Beep!

Ethan was cut off by the sound of his computer receiving a message.

Benny dashed over to Ethan's computer and swiftly opened his friend's e-mail account.

Benny was careful not to scroll over the folder that was titled 'Saved Messages From Sarah', for fear of embarrassing Ethan.

"Here it is!" Benny shouted, causing Ethan and Sarah to move closer for a better view.

Ethan read the message aloud.

"Congratulations! Ethan Morgan, you and a Mr. Weir have been officially deemed as White Chapel High's brightest freshmen! This means that you and Mr. Weir will be representing your high school in a competition that will determine the brightest pair of freshmen out of the four neighboring towns of Green Wood, White Chapel, Black Hill and Red Rock. A special meeting will be held this Sunday at White Chapel High, so that you may meet your fellow competitors. The rest will be explained after the introductions. We anticipate your participation in our tournament!

Sincerely,

Statistic Tournament Staff"

"I gotta go tell grandma!" Benny shrieked, running out of the room.

"So,- Sarah began, sitting on Ethan's bed.

-is this supposed to be some big math-off, or something?"

"Well, the tournament is broken down into two parts," Ethan began, turning his monitor off.

"It's one part science and one part geography."

"The overall focus of the tournament is to see which teams can survive each towns' geological features, find a specific item by solving a riddle along the way, and bring said item back to build something out of it."

"You are then given points for your performance."

"The final round involves the two teams with the most points facing off in a mystery challenge."

"It actually sounds pretty dangerous and challenging," said Sarah, who was wide-eyed as she stood.

"When does it start?" Sarah asked, moving towards the door.

"It starts on Monday morning and goes on for two weeks..." Ethan whispered, staring at the floor.

"We leave on sunday night."

"So...I guess I'll see you and Benny when you two get back then..." Sarah smiled half-heartedly.

"Have fun!"

"S-Sarah...wait."

"What is it, Ethan?"

"Uh, well, that is, you see,

How do I ask her? Ethan thought.

"What is it Ethan? Sarah asked again, eyeing Ethan suspiciously.

"B-Benny and I a-are allowed to e-each bring a...a...an assistant...or friend."

"Uh-huh..." Sarah breathed, trying not to giggle.

Should I just say yes?

Or should I make Ethan finish?

Lets wait a few more seconds... Sarah thought, watching as Ethan turned slightly red.

"A-and I was wondering, if you wouldn't mind that is, would you mind uh, if you had the time...

Time?

She's a vampire!

Just ask her right now, Ethan!

Ethan sighed and looked up at Sarah.

"Would you like to tag along as my assiss-, uh, friend, and help me out?"

Sarah couldn't help but smile.

Well, he did ask nicely... Sarah thought, walking over to, and hugging Ethan.

"I'd be honored!" Sarah exclaimed, releasing Ethan and flashing out of the room.

"She... actually WANTS to go?" Ethan whispered, smiling.

This tournament is going to be ten times better now! Ethan thought.

Sarah will be there, Benny and I get to show off for once, and no supernatural occurrences whatsoever!

I wonder who Benny's going to invite.

Surely he wouldn't dare to ask Erica to something like this...

Would he?

Short, I know, but it's the prologue sooooo..yeah.

What do you think?

Should I continue with Etharah and Bennica?
