I had just finished checking on my patient and friend, Quinn Fabray. She had been rushed in by her boyfriend, now fiancé, Sam Evans. What she thought was a stomach ache was really appendicitis. I had finished her surgery at 9am, checked on her once she was settled in her room, and spoke to Sam about her post release care. I was heading to the clinic as my pager went off. I picked up the chart from outside the door and saw that it was another, Tina Cohen-Chang, well Tina Chang now. She had married Mike six months ago. Mike was sitting in one of the chairs in the room, looking a little more nervous than Tina.
"Hi Tina; what's going on" I asked, looking over her vitals that the nurse had taken. She explained her symptoms as I had her lay down. I listened to her stomach and moved my stethoscope carefully. I heard something for sure other than regular stomach noises and I asked "Tina; do you think you might be pregnant?" "I don't know" she replied, sitting up. "From your symptoms and the fact that I heard movement in your stomach; you could be. Let's call for a test to be sure. A lab tech will be with you shortly" I told them. I made the call and began to conclude that Tina could be pregnant as I carefully checked and rechecked all my notes on her records.
About half an hour later; the lab report confirmed my theory. Tina was a month pregnant. I finally went into the room. "Tina; you're a month pregnant. You and Mike will be parents in eight months time. Here's your next appointment" I said, handing her the card and sending them on. By the time I got back to my office; it was 11:30am. I had to take my lunch now so my stomach could settle before my appointment with Artie. Artie and I had been good friends in school and he became a cardiologist, eventually taking me as a patient. He had been shocked to learn that I was sick.
I didn't tell a lot of people but I battled heart disease had been since just before sixth grade began. I had been doing well until last year. Last year; I had been in the middle of a physical when my heart stopped. My patient had kept me alive until I could be taken up to the cardiac floor. Artie had been in my room that instant and had gotten me on the transplant list within the hour. I finally made my way down to the cafeteria and got a sandwich, a fruit salad, and an apple juice. I slid my card and went to sit down. I was about to sit in the corner when Artie called "You'd best come sit with me little lady." "Or what" I asked. "I'll come over there, put you in my lap, and bring you over here and you'll have to stay in my lap the entire team" he replied. I finally gave and went to sit with him. Today went like usual but I had no idea that some secrets and desires would be coming out when New Directions would reunite for a mix of happiness and sadness.
