Chapter 12 : No Rainbow Without a Storm

"Urgh . I can't believe it !" Ace yelled , ruffling his hair .

"I can't believe it either ," Runo shook her head .

"Well , I can ," I blinked . "I dated her for three years ."

"I can't imagine how you lasted ," Ace put his hands together and bowed before me .

I shrugged my shoulders .

"It's been only two days ," Runo shook her head again .

"She's so petty ! Just because I replied her message five minutes late , she blew her top ," Ace rolled his eyes .

"Now you know the pain I went through ?" I chuckled , slinging my arm around Runo's neck . "Being with Runo for three days is better than being with Mira for three years . I feel more happy with my kid ."

"Awww ," Runo giggled , snuggling in my embrace .

Ace facepalmed . "For the last time , don't get all mushy in front of me ."

"One question ," I turned to Runo , who cocked her head to one side . "Now that they are on the verge of breaking up , are we going to break up too ?"

Runo blinked , then glared at me , "So you want a breakup ?"

I hugged Runo tightly . "No way !"

Runo laughed , pinching my cheek , "I was just joking ."

"Correction , I am not breaking up with Mira ," Ace shook his head .

Runo and I shrugged .

"Then are you going to make up with her ?" I rolled my eyes .

"Of course I will , I'll just have to figure out a way ," Ace rubbed his chin thoughtfully .

"Well , good luck with that ," Runo patted her cousin's shoulder and both of us turned away , ready to walk off .

"You're just leaving me like this ?" Ace protested , jaw dropping .

"She's your girlfriend , not mine ," I shrugged again .

"What a friend ," Ace snorted .

Runo and I walked away .

~ You know , Ace and Mira still aren't back together . ~

I turned to Runo , and raised an eyebrow . We were having lessons , and I was in the midst of falling asleep when she suddenly started a telepathical conversation with me .

Just what did he do ?

~ He apologised , of course . He offered to treat her to a meal . ~

I rolled my eyes and facepalmed at the same time .

Are you kidding me ? Mira's all about diet , diet and maintaining figures and everything .

~ Ohh kay . ~

I heard a tinge of jealousy in Runo's voice , but she didn't turn around .

Kid , chill .

~ I'm not angry . ~

And you don't have blue hair .

~ Why are you so ... so ... annoying ? I said I was okay ! ~

You don't sound okay .

~ I . Am . Okay . Happy ? ~

Runo , chill .

~ Stop asking me to chill ! ~

Stop asking me to stop asking you to chill .

~ Why are you so annoying ? ~

Why are you so stubborn ?

~ If you think I'm stubborn , get a new girlfriend ! ~

I stared at Runo . Surely she didn't mean that ?

Runo ...

No reply .

I ruffled my hair , annoyed . Girls .

After school , Runo left the classroom huffily . I tried to catch up to her , but it was like she just disappeared .

"Hey , Dan ," Alice smiled at me .

"Hi , Alice ," I said , looking past her , trying to spot Runo .

"That's mean ," Alice folded her arms before her .

I raised an eyebrow at the orange-haired girl . "And what do you expect me to do ?"

"I'm your senior , at least show me a little respect ," Alice tapped her foot unhappily .

I sighed and bowed . "Good afternoon , senior Alice ."

Alice beamed happily . "That's more like it ."

"Now why are you looking for me ?" I asked , a little annoyed .

"It's just that , the four of us haven't really hung out together much lately . You know , Shun , Ace , me , you ..."

"You're the one to talk . You and Shun are the people who are busy preparing for your graduating examinations ," I rolled my eyes .

"Fine . I admit defeat ," Alice shrugged , raising her hands . "But now that we've finished our exams , we want to go out as a group again , is that okay ?"

"I don't like the idea of interfering with the love matters of you and Shun , and Julie and Billy ."

"Then bring your girlfriend . I haven't met her either ," Alice smiled .

"What are you , my mother ?" I raised an eyebrow .

"Quite ," Alice smiled slyly . "Anyway , it's set . You and Ace bring your girlfriends to the usual place tomorrow at twelve ."

"One problem , Mum ," I raised my hand .

Alice tilted her head to one side .

"Ace and I have girlfriend problems ."

Ace walked past us with his arm slung over Mira's shoulder , both chatting away happily .

Alice cocked an eyebrow . "You were saying ?"

"Okay , okay , Runo and I just argued ."

"You don't know how to treat a girl right , do you ?" Alice shook her head in disappointment .

"Hey ! I do !" I protested unhappily .

"If you do , why is she angry with you ?"

"I guess , she was just a little sensitive and I didn't realise it ," I shrugged my shoulders .

Alice pointed a finger at me . "Then go solve your problem . You always had Mira wrapped around your finger even when you argue ."

"Runo is really different from Mira ," I rolled my eyes .

"Then good luck with it . You'd better bring your girlfriend tomorrow or you're treating us ," Alice turned around and walked off .

Oh great .

Perhaps I was over-reacting a little . Alice was actually right . I did have a way with Mira every time we fight . Runo and Mira are both girls , I'll pass this .

I rang the doorbell of Ace's house . Since I didn't want to let Runo think I was intruding their house just like that , I decided to act polite .

Runo opened the door . She saw me , and then tried to shut the door . I stuck my leg between the door and the wall , and pushed open the door .

I walked in rather demandingly , and shut the door behind me gently . Runo almost fell when I pushed the door against her , but I easily caught her with one arm . She blushed lightly and quickly got up , dusting herself .

She tried to cover up her blush , and snapped , "What are you doing here ?"

I held onto her hand . Even though she tried to pull away , I kept a hard grip on her . I pulled her up to her room , and settled her down on her bed .

"I want to clear up this mess with you , Kid ," I said , kneeling down in front of her . I made a puppy face . "Forgive me , please ?"

Runo blinked at me with a tinge of pink through her cheeks . "I don't want to ."

My jaw dropped . "Why ?"

"Because ..." Runo fidgered a little . "I don't want to spoil you !"

I was dumbfounded .

"I don't want to make you think , I'll forgive you easily each time you ask me to . What if next time you cheat on me ? What if next time you make accidents ? What if -" she never finished her sentence , because I'd crushed her into a tight embrace .

"Dan ..." she gasped .

"Do you feel that insecure around me ?" I whispered .

She peered at me with her innocent green orbs , and blinked . She then looked down guiltily . "It's not exactly that ..."

"Then what ?" I asked gently .

"I don't trust myself . I ... I'm not a perfect girl ... What if .. you don't want me ?" Runo gripped my jacket tightly as her voice trembled .

I nuzzled her hair with my nose . "Silly girl . You're the one and only perfect girl for me ."

Runo smiled in my embrace . She circled her arms around my neck , and pushed her lips against mine .

I was a little surprised . Runo had never initiated a kiss on the lips with me before . I smiled in between the kiss , and returned it . I was on cloud nine .

After a while , we let go of each other . Runo's face was red from blushing . I gently carressed her cheeks and leaned my forehead against hers .

"I'm sorry ," she whispered with a sad expression .

"Nah , it's okay ," I smiled . "Remember , Kid , you're the most perfect girl in my eyes , now and forever ."

Runo smiled back at me , and gave me a kiss on the lips . "Thanks , kid ."

I pulled away from her and with a swoop of my arm , placed her on my lap . She wrapped her arms around my neck , and I wrapped mine around her tiny waist . "Hey , that's what I'm supposed to call you , not the other way around ."

Runo giggled , "Let's just take turns ."

Even though we had gone through a quarrel in the same day , right now , I felt really happy . If not for the quarrel , I wouldn't have the chance to get a kiss initiated by Runo . If not for the quarrel , we wouldn't be closer right now .

There just isn't a rainbow without a storm before it .

I'm already in the midst of writing Chapter 13 . I think this story sucks , seriously . I included their powers , but didn't make much use , so I'm thinking of adding more action-packed stuff in so that the powers-stuff will make sense . How ? Good or bad ? (:
