Chapter One
Day Fourteen
Takano Masamune sighed as he drove down the cracked, debris covered street. He deftly drove his car through abandoned cars here and there; debris was scattered all over the street. Or what was left of it anyways. Buildings were cracked and rusted, looking as if they could collapse at any gust of wind.
Takano looked over to the seat next to his, where Usami Akihiko sat. The man's long legs were crossed and his lavender eyes were staring out the window, keeping an eye out for any signs of life. Usami Akihiko was once a highly respected author; he wrote BL books and other literature books. He was very successful and rich, that is, until the apocalypse happened and everything changed for him. Now he struggles to survive along with the survivors in the basement of the estate he used to live in until the apocalypse happened.
They knew they had to be careful not to venture into any shadowy areas, thus taking a risk at being eaten.
It wasn't like this, before the apocalypse hit.
Takano let out a sigh as the memories of the night the Zombie Apocalypse was announced crashed down upon him, and how the city had erupted in panic.
It was just another day in Markuwa Shoten; everyone was rushing around getting their manuscripts turned in, making phone calls, debating with the printers, arguing with the sales about how many copies should be made. They weren't expecting a sudden outbreak of screams and panic to erupt from the Sapphire department.
The editors had just stood around, looking at each other in confusion when something- certainly not human- staggered into the office and attacked the first person he saw- Mino.
Ritsu and Kisa screamed in terror and confusion when the Zombie leapt at Mino, taking the always smiling man down. Within minutes there was blood splattered everywhere and the zombie had sought his next victim- Ritsu.
Takano was in shock at what had just happened; but immediately leapt to his lovers' defense when he saw the zombie lunge. He gave it a kick to the chest, sending him stumbling back, but not even stunning him. At that moment the previously dead Mino rose to his feet, his eyes clouded and his face contorted in a beast like manner as he stumbled over to them, lunging for Kisa.
Kisa was faster than he look; he darted out the way of Mino just as the creature reached him, "MINO! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" he shrieked in terror, but Mino was gone. He had turned into one of them.
Mino lurched to his feet and tried to grab him again, but Kisa darted out the way just in time. The ebony haired boy then made a break for it, darting out the department, his mind on a certain sparkly prince that worked at the bookstore he always went to. He just prayed that his lover was alright.
With Mino and the other zombie distracted, Takano grabbed Ritsu's wrist and ran the hell out of there.
And that's how it all started, they now live in a cramped basement of what used to be a rich mans' house, along with a dozen survivors they stumbled upon along the way. Including Ritsus' ex fiancé, Kohinta An and Aikawa Eri.
Takano turned back to the road and scrunched his eyebrows at this thought. He really didn't know what to think of the creatures that were currently hidden out in shadowy areas or dark abandoned buildings. They were flesh eating creatures yet they didn't come out in the sunlight. Maybe they were part vampire?
Takano shook his head to clear it as he pulled out a cig and lit up; it was too confusing to think about it right now. He took a long drag of the cig and glanced at his wristwatch; it was already 4:45.
His heart thudded slightly, he could never get used to this five o clock curfew. That's when shadows were being casted and the zombies would come out, so everyone on patrol had to get back to the hideout. And they couldn't take a risk at getting infected, or the creatures finding out where they were hiding.
He took his cig out his mouth and let out a puff as he did a U- turn back in the direction of the safe house, "We need to get back," he mumbled to Akihiko, "It's almost five."
Akihiko looked over at the man in confusion, "Already?" he murmured as he looked at his own wristwatch to confirm it, his lavender eyes widened, "Wow… Time flies."
Takano grunted in acknowledgement and took another drag of his cig. He – or the rest of the smoking semes- weren't allowed to smoke in the safe house; since it's such a small confined space and there's only so much room to breathe.
They drove on in silence before Akihiko broke the silence, "How's Onodera and Misaki doing?"
Takano stiffened and looked dejectedly at the road ahead; his eyes shadowed with sadness, "No," he whispered at last, "There hasn't been any change; he and Takahashi are still sick."
Akihiko winced, "Damn it," he whispered, "I hope they aren't infected."
Takano let out a sigh as he turned onto the Usami estate; he and Akihiko weren't allowed to see or go anywhere near their beloved ukes, they couldn't risk being infected if they really did catch the virus. Only their doctor- Kusama Nowaki- was allowed to treat them and look them over, much to his lovers displeasure, but they had no choice.
Takano pulled into the remaining debris of the rich mans' used to be garage and climbed out the car. He sighed wearily and made his way for the front door, leaving Akihiko to hurry up after him.
He kicked open the door- which was hanging onto the frame for dear life- and walked towards the back of the ruined mansion. The creatures were very destructive; they tore this mansion apart, leaving trash and other ruined and broken items everywhere. Not that they held any value anymore that is.
He pounded three times on the door, "Open the god damn door!" he growled impatiently after waiting for a few moments. He looked at his wristwatch nervously: 4:55.
Finally, the sound of light footsteps could be heard on the other side of the door. The sound of many locks and gears being removed along with the metal click of the doorknob soon followed. The door opened to reveal Kohinta An, her usually bright blrown eyes were dull and lifeless lately; she had lost hope in any of them surviving this. She hurried the two inside before closing the door and relocking it. She dead bolted the metal door to keep it in place and lead the way downstairs to where everyone else was.
The sound of a heavy argument could be heard. Takano and Usami sighed in agitation when they recognized the voices as Hatori Yoshiyuki and Yanase Yuu. Those two would end up killing each other before the creatures had a go at them.
When they finally reached the bottom step, they saw that the two men were in the center in each others' facees arguing heatedly. On the left side of the room seven beds were lined together. Kisa Shouta and Yukina Kou cuddled together on one of them while Hiroki Kamijou was quietly reading a book. To the right side of the room was Hisashi and Chiaki huddled against the wall, both wincing and whimpering slightly at the sight of their boyfriends in a heated argument. On the very far side of the room Misaki and Onodera laid on one of the makeshift 'hospital beds' Nowaki was hovering over them for their check-up. Hiyori Kirishima was asleep on her bed, her eyes closed and her breathing light. Kirishima Zen was curled around his daughter, seeming deaf to the arguing couple in the center of the room. Yokozawa leaned uninterestedly against the wall, his arms crossed over his broad chest.
Takano and Usami did their best to ignore them as they hurried over to Nowaki, "H- how are they?" Takano asked the doctor in a mere whisper, his voice quivering. His beloved uke had fallen ill a couple of days ago, and it was only getting worse. Right now he and Takahashi were curled against each other, huddling close for warmth even though they were both panting and sweating in their sleep.
Nowaki sighed and looke dup at the raven haired man, "He's not getting any better, Takano-san," the man murmurs as he gets to his feet and takes off the mask he wearing to protect his mouth, so he wouldn't catch whatever Misaki and Ritsu caught.
Nowaki took off the gloves he was wearing and looked from Usami to Takano, then back again, "What they need is medicine, and fast."
"Where do you suggest we get that?" Aikawa spoke up from her place next to Yokozawa, her blue eyes also worried for the two boys. She had somehow yelled over Hatoris and Yanases bickering, "The drugstores are too dangerous to go in, what if there are creatures hiding out in them?"
Nowaki did his best to keep the impatience out his smooth voice when he replied, "The boys' fever rose while you two were gone, and it's only getting higher. They'll die without medicine."
"Then medicine we'll get," Takano says firmly, "Tomorrow, Akihiko and I will go to the nearby convenience store and bring home some medicine."
Usami nodded in agreement while Aikawa just gave up, she knew she couldn't convince them not to go even if she tried, and she also wanted the boys to get better.
"I agree that it's dangerous but we have no further option," Nowaki sighed.
He cast one more look over to the sleeping ukes before crossing the room back towards his lover. He sat down next to the man and wrapped his arms around his used-to-be professors' waist. The man didn't look up from his book but leaned against the gentle giant.
Yanase and Hatori gave it a rest at arguing- for now- and were on opposite sides of the room. Hatori and Chiaki were stretched out on the mattress, ready for yet another sleepless night. While Yanase and Hisashi were huddled together in the corner, both silently sketching in their sketchbooks.
"I hope Ric-chan will be alright," Kisa whimpered from his side of the room, his big doe eyes filled with worry for his adorable companion. Yukina kissed the top of his head and tried his best to comfort his worried lover but was failing miserably.
"Just don't get your sorry ass killed," Yokozawa grunts, nodding over to a pile of fully loaded machine guns and pistols, "Take those with you when you go."
Takano merely nods as he padded over to his own bunk, he lay on his back and stared up at the ceiling sadly, the bed was so cold without Ritsu's warm body in it. He could only pray and hope for the best for him.
When everyone turned in for the night, there were not enough beds for all of them; so many had to share. Yokozawa and Kirishima shared a bunk, while Hiyori, An, and Aikawa all shared one above them. They were the only girls in the group after all. Next to them, Takano usually slept with Onodera on the bunk above Usamis' and Misakis' but since the ukes were on the other side they were alone for another night. Next to theirs, Yukina and Kisa slept on the bunk above Nowakis and Hirokis and on the other side of theirs, Hatori slept on the bottom bunk with Chiaki while Hisashi and Yanase slept on the top.
Loud crashing and banging could be heard in the distance, not near the mansion but near enough. Eight year old Hiyori whimpered and cuddled closer to An, An did her best to comfort the girl and try to tell her that everything was alright even though it was nowhere near alright.
From the other side of the room, a low whimper could be heard, coming from Misaki.
The college student raised his head slightly, whimpering, "Usagi-san…" as he groped around for his missing lover. He felt a warm body next to his but the body was too small and petite to be Usagis'.
Usami sat up and looked over at the boy, he could barely make out his shape in the dark room but murmured, "Misaki…" as he got up and walked over to his sick lover. Nowaki didn't even protest at this when he saw the rabbit heading over to his lover; he knew that Misaki needed to be with him most right now.
"T- Takano-san…" another voice whimpered in the darkness. Takano's heart leaped for joy and he smiled at Onodera's voice calling his name. He needed him.
Takano got up and followed after Usami. They got on either sides of the beds and picked up their still half asleep lovers in their arms and carried them back onto their bunks.
Usami carried his lover onto the top bunk and disappeared over the side, pulling the boy into his arms as they snuggled closely together.
Takano laid the editor down and climbed in next to him, pulling the covers up and over them and holding the man close to his chest. He could feel the rapidly beating heart of his sick lover and even the sweat sticking to the brunettes' body. He kissed Ritsu's forehead lovingly and murmured, "Sleep Ritsu…" he cradled him against his chest once again, "I'll be here in the morning, right beside you."
