It had been four years since Jen had seen the Nexus. She missed it dearly. The doctors had given up on Louise. His body had given out. She grieved for weeks. The only escape Jen had was sleep. As soon as her head hit her pillow, she would be in the Nexus with her best friend Scree. Even though he'd asked her to remember him as Abdizure, Jen knew, to her, he would always be her rocky boy. She would dream that she was in one of the realms. Her favorite was Solum. They would be royally greeted by King Jarred and treated like royalty. In the Nexus, Jen was a hero, a hybrid with special power. Here she was a depressed, low life coffee waitress. She missed the scolding voice of her friend, who was like the father she never knew. A wave of despair flooded her at the thought of the friend she would never see again.

The bus door opened in front of the coffee shop Jen worked at. She stepped out of the bus with a heavy weight on her heart. She walked through the lonely doors without a smile. Nicky, a fellow coffee waitress spotted her and walked to the break room. Nicky had a bad habit of stopping as soon as Jen arrived. Nicky was the laziest person in the world. The fact that Jen had suffered heartbreak only a few weeks ago seemed to mean nothing to her. Jen never complained. She rarely spoke even when she had to. She just walked with her head down and did her work. Needless to say, she wasn't the cheery, "Have a nice day," kind of waitress. Today was no exception.

Many hours later, Jen walked out of the coffee shop with just as heavy a heart as before. She held her head down and walked slowly. She wasn't even looking where she was going. She just wandered to wherever her feet took her. She didn't realize, however that they were taking her to the street.

She didn't notice the bus that was heading her way. She didn't even look when it hit her, knocking the sense out of her.
