He loved her, more than anything in the world.
She loved another.
He wanted to marry her, to live and grow old together, as his mother and father had.
She already made those plans with the one she loved back, who wasn't him.
He wanted to be a carter, a keeper of stables and his beloved horses.
She wanted to be something else entirely.
His world was that of cities and the earthy smell of hay and horse.
Her world was that of wild places, deep forests that smelled of rain, quiet paths where he could never tread.
Everything.
