Notes: This is from Toki's prompt: "Ren's birthday".
Truth be told, he's never been a huge fan of celebrations. As the third son, he's the least important – he doesn't have to take over the company; his older brothers are more capable than him after all. When his mother was still alive, he could still act like a birthday boy, but the only ones who remember these days are the handful of the old staff. Not even his brothers would set aside time in their schedules to have dinner with him.
Ren knows his worth in the household, and he doesn't hold too much hope for this year either.
His birthday falls on a weekday, and between his classes and rehearsals, he doubts he'd even do anything special for himself. It's ironic that his birthday is the same as Saint Valentine's Day – he knows the girls who offer him chocolates and gifts remember the day as a holiday, not his birthday. Why would anyone remember it as such?
Predictably, he's surrounded the minute he walks into the cafeteria – even in class, before Ryuuya-sensei starts his lesson. Ren puts on a charming smile, fending off the confectioneries with an apology. He doesn't want the hassle of returning these gifts a month later, nor does he want to put up with rumours if he accepts anyone's presents. Regardless of how much he womanizes, this is one thing he wouldn't put them through; the higher the hope, the higher the disappointment.
It's surprising when Masato stops him in the hallway after the last class of the day – not picking at his faults, since all they ever do in public is bicker.
"Hijirikawa," he acknowledges, tipping his head slightly in his direction.
"Jinguji." He responds shortly. "You've been elusive for the whole day. Are you done? There's something I need to discuss with you."
"This is rare, that you need to talk to me." Ren chuckles, but makes no further comment as they make their way back to their dormitory.
He opens the door and turns on the lights, and there's suddenly a resounding bang! right next to his ear. Ren involuntarily cringes, then squints at the source—
"Happy birthday, Ren!"
Otoya hastily throws the party popper behind him (as if that clears his guilt) and hugs the older boy. His cheeky grin is ever present on his face, and he wastes no time in dragging Ren to the table where everyone else awaits.
"This is just a little something we got for you," Tokiya holds out the nicely wrapped box.
"Masato says it'll suit you," Syo adds.
Ren raises an eyebrow at him, then at Masato—who makes no comment about it, other than to keep a stoic mask on.
"Ah, and don't forget about the cake I made for the occasion!"
"Natsuki, we don't want anyone dying on a birthday!"
