chapter 1 - child from afar
“Who are you?” Tails questioned, wondering how such a little girl got out by herself, with no parents or anything. She was sitting atop his working desk, licking a cherry red lollipop. A small hedgehog was she, about less than half of Sonic’s size. She was dressed in white overalls with shoes that resembled that of the true blue hedgehog hero’s. Tails assumed that she might be another fan of his, who happened to be even younger than he was. But, her mellow personality and seriousness made Tails think for just a little bit. She blinked a few times, and then looked at him for a second.
“Tails? Don’t you remember me? Soniti?”
“Remember? Uhh...” he scratched his head, sweatdropping. And why was she addressing him so formally as if they’ve been friends for a long time? Does this girl have amnesia or something? Tails was quite aware that he was well-known around his residence, but come on… “Er, no! I'm sorry, I really don't.” She pouted, folding her little arms across her chest. “OK, where are you from?”
“I’m from South Island,” the little purple hedgehog piped up, jumping up a little bit. “It shouldn't-“ she peeked out of Tails' workshop, as she lifted a finger, but slowly started to lower it down. “It shouldn't be far... at all...” she muttered, in a doubted tone.
“Hm...” Tails rubbed his furry chin in contemplation.
“Oh! Do you have any idea where mom and dad are?” she asked, hoping to knock some kind of sense into the fox.
“No... I don't know your parents.” Soniti gasped as her little paws flew up to her rosy cheeks.
“You must have amnesia!” she exclaimed. “Don't you remember ANYTHING?” she yelped, almost getting angry.
“Sorry, sorry!” Tails squealed, making gestures with his hands. He didn’t want to anger the little girl-who know what she was capable of. “M-maybe if you tell me, I'll know. Full names?” She thought for a second, tapping her own nose.
“Ummm... oh, I know! Sonic Takeshi Hedgehog and Amy Rose.”

“AAAAHHH!” Tails screamed, hopping on top of his desk, startling the young one out of her wits. “You're Sonic and Amy's daughter!” He pointed, scared out of his own wits. Soniti tilted her head, a little bit confused. “Uh... y-yes...”
“I knew something was going on between those two!” Tails hopped down… as he began to calm down, he realized something. “Wait a second... how old are you!”
“I'm four and a half!” she grinned as she held up three fingers.
“Oh my g—”
Sonic had suddenly rushed into the room, slamming the door against the wall stopping the two in the middle of their odd conversation. Without even noticing the little purple one, he started towards Tails, about to explain a new discovery of his. “Hey, Tails! There's a—“
“Daddy!” Soniti wailed with delight, hopping off of the table and running at full speed towards Sonic, knocking him backwards. Some of Tails’ belongings were toppled over, but he didn’t mind much. He was still shaking with the shock of the news he’d just received.
“Whoa!” Sonic exclaimed, startled. He was on the floor, with a little purple hedgehog latching onto his chest. A sweatdrop formed on his head as she began to nuzzle her nose against his, and he turned his head towards Tails.
“Err... Tails? Is this your girlfriend... or something? A bit young, isn’t she?”
“NO!” Tails screeched, trying to pull Soniti off. He eventually lifted her off of Sonic, who was now brushing himself. Soniti stared for a second, looking dazzled. “This is Soniti, and eh...” Tails muttered, biting his lip. Sonic scratched his head. “She’s really small, but why does she look so familiar?”
Tails thought for a second. Thank goodness Soniti wasn’t saying anything. She looked much too stunned to speak. Then he slowly put her down.
“Sonic... don't you... know her or something?”
“Never seen’er before in my life.” Then Tails turned to Soniti. “How did you-“
“I stepped into your invention thingy that you told me not to but I was so curious and I didn’t see anybody get hurt from it yet because nobody tried it so I just had to try it to see what it was like so that you could determine whether it would be safe or not and then I stepped into a bright light and it felt like I was on some kinda roller coaster and stuff and… I didn’t know.” Soniti blurted, with a sheepish grin. “I'm really sorry... now that I’ve realized it… but it’s not my fault, really! I'd go back but... I don't see it anymore. I’ve gotta find Teacup, my Chao! And this place looks SOOOO different...” Then she turned to Sonic. “So do you! But just barely!” Sonic blinked, confused.
“Wha?” was all that his brain could come up with after a few deep thought processings.
“Sonic. I need to tell you something...” Tails said all melancholy like, his ears flapping over his head. He led him out the door. Hey, wait for me!” Soniti cried, but to no avail. So she sat, shrugged, and continued suck on her lollipop.
Sonic!” Tails rasped, under his breath. “That's your little girl in there! Bundle of joy! Your offspring!” Tails flailed. Sonic titled his head, as if he were thinking deeply.
“That’s bad... right? …What’s an off—WAIT A MINUTE!” Sonic yanked the door open again, looking at Soniti who was licking that lollipop. His mouth suddenly dropped open, then he slammed it shut again.
“That came from ME?” The blue hedgehog yelped, jerking a thumb at himself. Tails nodded, but stopped in-between.
“Nonono,” Tails started. “From you and Amy!” Sonic was perfectly still for a second. Even the wind died down to show that the world had temporarily stopped.
“Sonic...?” Then Tails slapped his hand over his mouth, giggling. “It's a wonder why she's purple...”
Sonic fainted.
Hours passed, and Tails was waiting for Sonic to get up from his unfortunate state of sleep.
“Hm...” he hummed, doing repair work on a little radio, and researching the candy wrapper that Soniti had left behind. All of a sudden, Sonic jumped up out of the cot he was lying in, and grabbed Tails by the shoulders.
“YAAAH!”
“Tails, this is a nightmare, r-right? Amy and I, we never... we never—” Tails patted Sonic's shoulder, calmly as to reassure him. “I know, I know... BUT YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO SCARE ME LIKE THAT!”
Soniti walked out of the back room at that moment, rubbing her eyes. “Daddy! You're finally awake!” she giggled, and latched onto his tail. Sonic heaved a sigh. A very, very heavy sigh. “Awwww... man, I...”
“Wait ‘til Amy hears about this...” Tails smirked, trying to contain his laughter. Sonic slapped his hand over Tails' mouth. “Whaddya mean? Don't you dare say a word to her! Not a single one!” he threatened, with the fear obvious in his higher-than-normal voice. Tails let out a quite muffled laugh, then bit Sonic's hand.
“Ow!” he pulled back suddenly as if he’d just touched something hot.
“OK, OK. I won't tell. ... Yet.” Tails folded his arms across his chest. “Besides, she has every right to know 'cause Soniti is yours as good as hers.” Sonic frowned. “But-“
“I think and can assume I know what happened. Problem is, how are we going to send her back to the future?”
Sonic groaned. “The future?” Tails shrugged.
“Well, supposedly… you and Amy uh… supposedly you and Amy got married—Soniti wouldn't be existing, right?” Sonic hated to admit it. How did he and Amy end up getting married anyway! She wasn't his girlfriend. He did care a bit for her despite how annoying she was, but marriage! Well, Soniti is here and proof. And he kinda liked the kid-maybe he could keep her and not marry Amy. Who knows…
“C’mon, man! I don’t need to know!” Sonic was angry, worried, scared, and shocked all at the same time. His ears were twitching uncontrollably, and he was groaning.
The tiny purple hedgehog blinked, looking up at Sonic in astonishment.
“My own dad...” she sniffled. “My own father doesn't even care for me!” She started attempting to cry.
“Uhh,” Sonic said, taken aback. “N-no, it's not like that! It's just—!”
Tails snickered.
“Tails...” Sonic growled, through gritted teeth as he shot him a look. Then Sonic sighed, getting down on one knee, and picked Soniti up.
“So you’re my daughter, huh...” he asked half-heartedly, looking at her through half-closed eyes. Soni nodded.
“Yea! I guess you didn’t know.” Soniti rubbed the back of her head smiling sheepishly, but in a cute way. “I'm sorry, Tails!”
“No problem. I'm actually enjoying this.” He replied nonchalantly. Now, Sonic would have lunged at Tails and beat the very existence out of him and possibly thrown him out the window, but Soniti was here, and well... you don't wanna give her a bad example, now do you? Sonic coughed.
“Anyway. Let's go and see how fast you can run the!”
“OK!” They led out the door.
Tails almost fell over on his chair and slapped his forehead. “Talk about you father-daughter relationships...” Tails shook his head. “Sonic won't mind if Amy came over... besides, Soniti would be thrilled.” He dialed her number as he blatantly ignored Sonic’s earlier threat. Oops.
Amy was sitting on her couch in her downtown Station Square apartment, eating cookies and watching TV with her mischievous NiGHTS Chao companion, Nighty. It was a little late in the afternoon, and she felt like relaxing for this evening.
“I kinda miss Shadow. It's so lonely now that he’s gone… don’t you think?” Nighty nodded, and the ended up purposely spitting cookie crumbs all over the carpet that Amy had just vacuumed earlier. “Ah!” Then the telephone rang. “I'll get you, Nighty...” she warned as the old Chao let out a venomous villainous cackle. Amy picked up the receiver, sighing. “Hello? Amy Rose, here.”
“Hi, Amy-chan! It’s me, Tails!” he cried, over the line. Amy smiled.
“Well, you sound quite happy today! And considering you only call here once in a blue moon… What's up?”
“Umm... well, I can't tell you now. Come over and look for yourself! This is a huge, and I mean HUGE surprise! And it’s not Sonic. Well, actually, in reality, it’s kinda small, but then it's huge in a sense, y’know?” he babbled on.
“Uh... yeah, okay.” Amy giggled. “OK then, I'll be right there! See you in about an hour!”
She hung up. “Yay! This is gonna be exciting!” She picked up Nighty to tuck into bed, and got dressed.
Later...
“Man! You're pretty fast for a five-year-old!” Sonic whistled, wiping sweat from his brow as the two rolled around in the grass, childish giggles filling the air. It was turning dark, and he looked as the sun began to slowly set over the Mystic Ruins. It was a lovely sight, and the sky’s deep orange tint was already turning into a dark purple. Soniti beamed with pride.
“Well, thanks! I still dunno how to curl up, though... it’s really hard.” She pouted, looking down to the ground as they began to sit up. Sonic smiled, a rush of paternity boosting in him. Being a father wasn’t so bad. He forgot why he was freaking out earlier. He reached down to pat and rub her head. “Don't worry. I'll teach you.” Soniti grinned at him.
“We’d better get back inside...” he sighed, as he lifted her onto her back. The sky was getting dark quick, and he wondered if she was afraid of the dark or not. Then another female voice from across started to fill the breezy air…
“Sonikku! Was that you?” Soniti and Sonic turned their heads quickly to see Amy approaching them.
“OH NO!” Sonic gawked, making random gestures of surprise. “What is she doing here!” Sonic quickly grabbed Soniti, putting his hands over her mouth, and swung her behind him. Thank goodness it was getting dark. Either way, judging his odd actions, of course someone (even as dense as Amy) would see he was up to something…
“Hi, Sonie!” Amy smiled, halting to a stop right in front of him. Sonic was sweating bullets, his heart pounding.
“Wh…what are you doing here?” he yelped, trying to not say her name so Soniti wouldn’t question.
“What do you mean ‘what am I doing here’? Hmph!” She turned around, sticking her nose up into the air as she explained herself. “For your information, Tails invited me here, so nyah! I was just gonna ask you where he was since I heard you on my way down from the train station.” Sonic swallowed hard, and then blinked, eyes shifting about.
“He’s nowhere!”
“Sonic...”
“Fine...” Sonic muttered, knowing this was a fight he wasn’t gonna win. Amy was gonna find out sooner or later, anyway. “He’s in his workshop.” He mumbled reluctantly. “It’s pretty obvious, wouldn’t you say?”
“OK.” She smiled, ignoring his sarcastic remark. “Thank you!” Amy grinned, saluted, and ran towards his workshop.
“Whew! … Ouch!” Soniti had grabbed his tail-a bit tighter this time.
“What was that all about? Who was that?” Soniti asked, placing her hands on her hips, frowning. Sonic rubbed his bruised tail, wincing.
“That was… one of Tails’ friends.”
“I wanna meet her!” Soniti jumped, running towards Tails’ workshop.
“N-no… NO! Soniti, come back!” Sonic cried, taking heel after her.
Hmm. Maybe Amy was that dense after all.
chapter 2: somewhere around nothing! Will Amy find out about this dilemma? How will they ever send Soniti back to her own time? WILL they send her back to her own time! Find out in the next chapter!
