The End of Gods & Giants

It had begun at last. Ragnarok.

They had always foretold of this day. But was anyone really ready?

Was anyone really prepared for what would happen?

The Fimbulwinter did not happen.

The Serpent rose, and the wolf shattered his prison, but were was Sutr?
Where were the days of ice and snow and of the endless wolf packs roaming?

Then he was there. At the head of his brothers who were living fire themselves.

Sutr, the Black One, the Lord of Muspell.

The Fallen had risen to fight his army's and Hel's army's.

They clashed but it did no good. Neither side gained the advantage.

Heimdall and Loki were the first to die. Both impaled upon Heimdall's sword.

Then Thor died next. Nine steps he took before he succumbed to the serpent's venom.

Odin despite all his sight and wisdom was torn apart and eaten by the Great Wolf.

His son barely managing to kill the Great Wolf himself.

And then Frej saw Sutr march towards him and knew he would stand no chance.

But this is what he was MEANT to do. Stand at the final fight and delay Sutr so the others could kill him.

But he silently cursed himself for giving away his sword.

But then the light in the sky went away as the sun and the moon were devoured by the Sons of Fenrir.

He could see Sutr quite clearly now and still he stood his ground.

Sutr simply cleaved his sword through Frej's armour and continued on past his now broken body.

Frej tried to crawl, tried to delay Sutr, but to no avail.

All he could do was watch as Sutr climbed the stairs into Valhalla.

The Valkyries themselves tried as well to stop Sutr but one by one all fifty-one Valkyries were laid down before the Lord of Muspell. Their mounts, the Wolves of Valhalla were laid down as well.

And above all the noise and death and destruction Frej heard Sutr say to him this: 'Odin's greed, desperation, and lies have brought about the End. His desire to prevent this Ragnarok from happening and continual oath breaking has changed nothing. This cycle will end and a new one will begin. They say you were destined to die in this cycle Frej. But you will live. Fire will make new the world of Midgard. Humans will now have a chance to live free of the influence of Gods, or giants, or any other beings from the beyond.'

Then Sutr looked back at Frej and his face changed from that a of a fire giant to that of being not to dissimilar from himself. 'I witnessed the depths of Odin's depravity and greed during the War that "United" the tribes. I alone am the last Vanir outside his control. I willing took up the mantle of Fire Sword so I may one day take revenge upon him. My revenge is complete and now my duty is clear.'

He walked into the Halls and a light cascaded from Valhalla, across Asgard and throughout the Nine-Worlds, it encompassed the World-Tree, even Nidhogg was distracted and looked towards this light and knew that it had finally come.

And Frej saw nothing.
