As he boarded back the Lydia, Bush was struck by Hornblower's dizzy look and slowness of speech. He instantly worried about a concussion, noticed the deliberate way he articulated each word and reassessed it as a hidden wound, while discussing the prize crew.
The Captain didn't answer, looked up to examine the refitting of the rigging and said: "Matthews is dead. I think Harrison is ready to fill in."
Styles was wandering about in some kind of shock. He was crying, without any shame. He had just finished sewing Matthews in his hammock: Bush would soon be reading over him.
