Daddy's Little Girl- Chapter 1
(A.N.: This story is based on the fan theory that Doug is Chell's biological father. So if you do not agree with this for one reason or another, please don't flame or bash this in your reviews. And of course, you don't have to read this. )
"Congratulation, Mr. Rattmann. It's a healthy baby girl." The young scientist got up from his seat and went over to the nurse. "Can I see her?" he asked, his excitement evident in his eyes.
"Of course. Right this way." The nurse led him to the nursery where the other newborns laid sleeping. She picked up one of the babies wrapped in a light pink blanket with a cream colored hat covering her curly black hair and carefully handed her to him, "Hold her just like this and there." Doug looked down at the tiny person in his arms and smiled, pride swelling up in his chest. The little girl opened her eyes and blinked at the man holding her.
"Hello there," he whispered, "I'm your dad. It's nice to finally meet you." The nurse smiled, "Your wife told me you two decided on a name for her already?" He nodded, not taking his eyes off his daughter, "We did. We decided to name her Chell." He touched her cheek softly as Chell yawned and drifted to sleep. The nurse nodded, going to write it down. Doug brought Chell close and gently kissed her forehead, "I love you, my dear Chell."
Returning to work wasn't easy. Doug would sometimes daydream about his wife and his little girl at home. He would go as far as saying he missed being woken up in the middle of the night by Chell's crying and the occasional throwing up on his shirt. He looked at the picture that sat on his desk of the women in his life and smiled.
"So Doug. That's your little girl, huh?" one of his colleagues asked. Doug nodded, "It is. I never thought I would instantly fall in love with her the way I did the moment I held her." His colleague nodded, "That's how it was when I first held my little Melinda. Looking at that round little face and thinking about how it's my responsibility to raise her to be a proper young woman just makes you feel wonderful." Doug nodded in agreement before looking up at the clock on the wall. "Well, it's time for me to head home," Doug said, standing up, "I can't keep them waiting."
"Alright. Oh, you heard that the engineers finally made those combustible lemons, right?" Doug blinked, "So after all these years of hearing Mr. Johnson's rant about them, they finally made it? How long was the beta testing for it?"
"Who knows? Each time they got a working prototype, it exploded." Doug nodded, "Well, we'll get to see it tomorrow if it's still around. I'll see you then, Jack." Jack nodded and went to get his things. Doug picked up his things and headed home.
From the moment he stepped into his home, he could hear his wife humming a lullaby softly. Setting his briefcase down and taking off his lab coat, he made his way to the nursery and smiled, stopping by the door. His wife sat in a rocking chair by the window, humming softly to the fussing little girl in her arms, trying to calm her down. "I'm home," he whispered as she looked up at him.
"Welcome home, dear. I think Chell missed you more than I did," she said, getting up and walking over to him. He smiled and took Chell in his arms, "There, there… I'm home now, sweetie." He rocked her a bit as she slowly calmed down and looked at him. "This might be a problem if I'm gone overnight," he said, propping Chell against his shoulder, "She's not even four months old and it seems like I've spoiled her already." His wife smiled softly, "I'm sure she'll get used to you working. You're doing what you can to provide everything for her." He nodded and went to lay the now sleeping Chell in her crib, "I love you, Chell. Sleep tight." He kissed her forehead softly and stepped out the room with his wife, picking up the monitor.
