This is a one-shot idea I got when browsing a book on the death of Captain America, and I saw a few Clint-Steve friendship comic strips and so I thought I'd look into it and I became a AmericanHawk fan! That is my nickname for it anyway.
Clint watched as Tony poured another drink, his eyes never leaving that amber fluid that ran like a waterfall out of the bottle into the chipped, lip-stained glass.
Tony just laughed, but it faded quickly and replaced with a glugging sound as he drank the alcohol down soundly having been used to drinking heavily for so long. Clint didn't bother stopping the superhero legend known as 'Ironman' drink himself into a new low, Clint understood how the man felt.
They had lost Captain America, Steve Rogers, who was an important person to all of the Avengers. Wolverine and Bucky had become close friends discussing what they both knew about the legendary captain, exchanging numbers for mobiles and even staying up late like Clint and Tony did just drinking. Except they'd talk, unlike the archer and his companion.
"Tony... Tony, it's late, I think we should get you to bed."
Stark just shrugged Clint's gentle touch off, returning to kiss the lips of the whiskey bottle. The S.H.I.E.L.D agent sighed heavily, returning his hands to their original post been crossed over his chest as he resumed to watch Tony drink into a stupor.
The agent known as Hawkeye fought alongside the Avengers for a long time, and kept a decent relationship with everyone while still having everyone but Natasha at arm's reach so he could never get hurt by any of them but Clint always kept Steve in a special place, he was him as an authority figure, a hero, an idol, a father figure. A possible love interest?
Not possible... thought the archer many times when he'd see the philanthropist and the super-soldier beside one another whether it be simple conversation, explaining the modern world, sketching the scientist from afar, an argument or fighting alongside one another like teammates do.
He could sense the sexual tension, and saw the glances they gave one another or the occasional touch that "wasn't intended".
Clint had tried to keep the Captain out of mind, even after finding out about his death but it became increasingly hard when Thor had claimed to see his wandering soul in an alternate universe, or when Tony approached him and "kidnapped" him to see if he was the real Clint Barton, after his death was feigned. He wanted to hurt Tony so bad after that, when the fragile man presented the prototype of Steve's shield was handed to him. Especially when he could wield it himself so effectively.
But Clint owed Steve Rogers everything, and so he never hurt Tony. He never hurt anybody unless he believed it was to honour the American Legend or to protect those he or the Captain cared about. He stayed by Tony's side as Tony recovered from the shock of his lover's assassination.
Tony had said it before, but Clint had to agree as he watched his world crumble around him once more.
The civil war wasn't worth it; it wasn't worth losing you Cap'.
