A/N: okay guys, here is chapter 1 of the Dead of the Night. Thank you to everyone who read the last book and reviewed it. Because the movie is not out yet, this will be following the book itself, with little changes of my own. However when the movie comes out, I'll re-write the chapter with some of the movie scenes in it.
Anyway enough blabbering. Time to shine :)
Happy reading folks!
Chapter 1:
I can't go to sleep now. I haven't had a good night's sleep since the invasion started two months ago. Everyone has been on edge since Kevin drove Corrie away with a bullet wound in her back to Wirrawee Hospital. And since I can't sleep, I might as well write out whatever has been bugging me and put it on paper. It works to some extent, but it doesn't get rid of the nightmares.
Before I wrote the last one, everyone was encouraging me to write, shooting me ideas. Now not everyone was so pleased to what I wrote. Especially Chris. What I wrote probably hurt Chris the most, but I warned them that I wasn't holding back and I intend to keep that promise.
Anyway, right now, I'm in a tent with Homer, holding the torch between my neck and shoulder while I'm writing. It's a bit chilly tonight. All of us decided to put up tents under out protective fly screen which was covered with sticks and leaves for protection of enemy planes and helicopters. We put up the tents because of the coldness that came sweeping through our sanctuary called Hell.
Two weeks after Kevin and Corrie left, Homer called another 'team meeting'. We've all been too edgy since that night, haven't had a goodnight's sleep and I thought that everyone was too depressed to discuss plans or talk to one another. But Homer, on the other hand, he silently began to make plans. I would never forget what he said that day.
Homer was leaning against a boulder that he named 'his spot'. He was looking at each one of us with a serious expression. His dark curly hair was tied up, away from his face and his hands were pushed deep within the pockets of his jeans. He had dark circles under his eyes from lack of sleep and he seemed to age more with every day passing.
Homer's dark eyes fell onto Lee who was sitting on a rock wit Fi, playing with the leaves on the ground and smiled sadly at Fi every now and then. He ripped off bits of the leaves and chucked them into the water and he didn't look at Homer or the rest of us. And even if he did, I would know that there would only be sadness in his eyes.
Next to Lee was Fi. I think that I hurt her more than Chris and I also think that I broke her confidence with Lee. She told me after she read the last book that I didn't really include the others in the last one. I underestimate Fi a lot. She may look like a princess, however I think that she has a secret side to her that she doesn't want anyone to know about and that side broke out of its cage after we'd destroyed the bridge.
Robyn sat next to me. Other than Homer and Kevin, Robyn was one of the strongest people that I knew. She brought hope to those who needed it most and she smiled a lot. She prayed every night just before we go to sleep. I liked how she was strong in her beliefs.
Chris was writing in his little black book that was full of his poems. He was still the same Chris but he was more moody towards me than anyone else in the group. He has been writing poems a lot.
Homer hasn't spoken a word to me since what I wrote. That was a bad sign. A really bad sign. We use to talk about everything and anything but now Homer couldn't stand anywhere near me. I know this is stupid of me to even do this, but sometimes I stay up at night, wondering what to do to fix everything and everyone. But we couldn't continue arguing all the time. We need each other too much.
Anyway, Homer started the 'team meeting'. And no one was really paying any attention which made me feel guilty now. I should have encouraged Homer somehow instead of keeping silent.
Homer cleared his throat. "Guys, we can't be like this anymore. We have to get back into gear and help win this war. We can continue to be depressed or we can do something and I don't know about you guys, but I've had it with the depressing thoughts that are running through my mind. I want to do something that will help our future," he said, gazing at the river, glancing at us every now and then. He was speaking with so much emotion that I could tell he has been thinking about this for a while now and I cursed at myself as to why I didn't notice it before.
"Anyway, now that autumn is coming, we need to stock supplies for winter so that we don't have to get more supplies all the time. We need more suitable livestock and vegetables planted, but we can plant vegetables when spring comes. We've got warm clothes, sleeping bags and tents and an endless supply of firewood, but they're only survival things. However that's not what I want us to do," he said, making me, Robyn and Fi look at him. Chris and Lee were still not paying any attention.
"One is that we need to look for people who are just like us. Dr Clement said there were people who tried to blow up the bridge up before we did it, so there's bound to be some rebels. We need to connect with them in order to win this damn invasion. And the second thing that I think that we should do is look for Kevin and Corrie," he finished, making us react differently.
Chris stopped writing and stared at Homer with his mouth opened, he was either shocked or unable to comprehend what Homer was saying. Lee stopped playing with the leaves on the ground and looked at Fi, both having a silent conversation. Robyn smiled encouragingly at Homer and I got up and walked to a ledge that over looked Cobblers Bay.
Find Kevin and Corrie? It filled us with hope and excitement. No one thought about it before. When Homer said that, it gave us something to think about, to find the answers to our questions that we've been asking. I started to smile. Homer had done the impossible thing once again and got us back on our feet.
Now the question was, how on earth are we going to get inside the hospital?
A/N: YAY first chapter done. How did you guys liked it? Want me to continue to write?
Please review
Thanks :)
