Matsuda remembered his first day back at high school, senior year.
The word loser was written all over his locker in red ink. He sighed deeply. He didn't want to walk up to his locker and grab his books; what kind of impression would he be pulling off for the new students? Well, it doesn't really matter anyway, he figured. They'll find out that I'm a loser, one way or another. This wasn't at all new to him. In fact, he was expecting it. Maybe not this exact situation, but he did expect something. He didn't find it fair that he was to be labeled a loser for the majority of his life. Everyone deserved a second chance.
He opened his locker to hear sounds of laughter ringing in his ear. "What a loser!" Matsuda heard a girl passing by tell her friend, which resulted in a loud giggle.
"I'm not a loser..." Matsuda whispered to himself and clenched his fist as he came back to reality. He was now back at his apartment in Tokyo, Japan.
Matsuda Touta is now one of the world's top police officers. After all, he was the one who shot Kira down. Not many people know this, though. Kira's death had been kept a secret. The only people who know the truth are the Japanese Police Force and the Yagamis. Not even the Yagamis know how it actually went down. Kira's death had not been mentioned to the public; the Japanese Police Force decided to let the world realize this on their own.
Matsuda was rewarded with forty-five million yen-which he solemnly declined, but the police force insisted. He didn't do much with the money; he bought himself a nice apartment, overlooking the city. He kept the rest of the money in his bank account, deciding that he might need it one day if he has a family.
Matsuda wanted to have his own family. Unlike most men his age, he really loved children. He also had a particular girl in mind that he wanted to marry, although she would never want him back. He was nothing to her. That didn't stop him from dreaming about her every night, though. That girl invaded his thoughts and dreams almost every second of the day.
That girl was Sayu Yagami.
"Sayu, it's a beautiful Saturday morning. Let's go out with Akane and have a fun girls' day out!" It was Katsumi, one of Sayu's closest friends. Katsumi was trying to convince Sayu into going out with them over the phone. Sayu hasn't left the house in weeks, and her friends have started to worry about her.
"Kat, I'm really tired," Sayu lied. She didn't put any effort into it, either.
"Tired? How can you be tired? It's twelve in the afternoon; the day hasn't even begun yet!"
"I don't know. I just am."
"Oh come on, Sayu. Please!" Katsumi begged her.
"Alright, alright. I'll meet you guys at the coffee shop in thirty minutes."
"Okay!" Katsumi said cheerfully before hanging up.
Sayu had been depressed for the past few years. The twenty-eighth of January, 2013, was the day her life practically fell apart. Ever since then, she was never her happy, quirky self. How could she be? Sayu had thought about ending her life and just forgetting it all. She could never bring herself to do such a thing, though. Sayu was determined to regain her happiness back, but she wasn't sure if that was even remotely possible.
She changed into a white, sequined tank top and denim shorts. Sayu didn't wear much make-up. She usually just left the house with some blush, mascara, and lip gloss on-nothing too much. She brushed her hair, slipped on her pink flats, grabbed her handbag, and headed for the door.
Sayu started walking to the coffee shop, breathing in the fresh summer air. Blossomed flowers and chirping birds were in sight, and she could hear children's laughter. It really is a beautiful day, Sayu thought. It took her another twenty minutes to reach the coffee shop. As she walked in, she found her friends, Akane and Katsumi, sitting at a table discussing something.
"Hey," she said as she walked to where they were sitting.
They turned their heads in unison and said, "Hey, Sayu!"
She took a seat. "Was I interrupting something?
"Oh, of course not! We were just talking about the new summer collections that just came out. They're really gorgeous, Sayu! We were thinking of going shopping today, since the sales are on now. What do you think?" Akane said.
"I haven't been shopping in a while... Sure, why not?" Sayu thought aloud.
Akane clapped excitedly. "Yay! We're going to have so much fun!"
"I'm going to go order the drinks, what do you guys want?" Katsumi asked them, getting up from her seat.
"Cappuccino for me, please!" Akane said.
"I'll have a caramel latte," Sayu said.
"Alright, I'll be back," Katsumi left.
Sayu and Akane were chatting about University when a bell rang, indicating that a customer had entered the shop. Both of their glances shifted to the door, where a man wearing a smart-looking suit came through it. He stood behind Katsumi, waiting in line to order some coffee. Akane continued their conversation, but Sayu wasn't listening. She was staring at the man, trying to figure out where she'd seen him before.
I know this guy! Who is he? Sayu thought. She looked at his face for a moment, and then it hit her.
"Matsuda," Sayu said out loud.
"Hm?" Matsuda let out, turning around to see who had called his name.
Damn it! I said that out loud, didn't I? Sayu cursed herself.
