Chapter 2
Not only do you share contemporary dance class with Remy Taylor, you also find her sitting right across you in your ethics class Friday morning. She's only been here for a week but she talks like she freaking owns the place when the teachers asks for her opinion on some philosopher who wrote a book hundreds of years ago.
It doesn't take you long to know that this girl is smart and you can't deny that the way she uses her words fascinates you in a way. About the same way her taste in clothes does and her big earrings underneath that woolen hat or the tattoo on her right arm.
You still don't know what to think about her. Whenever you remember the encounter at the club the other night where you made a fool of yourself by walking up to her, you want to slap your face. But you also find it surprisingly difficult to take your eyes off her because there's something that makes you curious. It's been a while that you were curious about another person.
When your ex-girlfriend broke up with you, you kind of lost interest in everything except for dancing. You swallow at the thought of her. She's probably lying somewhere on a beach on the west coast, having fun with her blonde cheerleader friends.
Wow.
You realize that it's been the first time you woke up today without your thoughts going to her first thing after you opened your eyes, wondering where she is and how she's doing. You only think about her now and this is already your third class today. It's record-breaking.
Does this mean you're finally making progress in moving on?
You freeze when dark eyes pierce into yours without warning. Quickly you look away because that just completely snapped your attention back and you realize that not only Remy is looking at you but pretty much every student sitting in class. Also the professor.
"Ms. Lopez? I asked you a question. Your lack of answer tells me you either don't know it or you've been daydreaming." You swallow when the professor lifts his eyebrows. "This is not the right time or place to not pay attention."
You feel bad because you really like Professor Montgomery. He's one of the nice ones who teaches with passion and shows real interest in every single student.
"I'm sorry" You mumble embarrassedly and listen to another student answering the question that you were supposed to answer. At high school you probably would have made a snarky comment about how it's the teacher's own fault if you don't know the answer because his class is way too boring. But ever since you've been here you sort of lost that bitchy side of yours. You have no explanation to why though. It's like your alter ego 'Snixx' stayed in Lima Heights or something. You wonder when she'll make an appearance again. Maybe if someone really pisses you off and you find the energy to let them know.
You clear your throat when your eyes wander back to the other side of the classroom and they once again get locked with Remy's. So she's been looking at you, too?
This time the eye contact lasts maybe one second longer before you cave in and look away. When was the last time somebody made you nervous by a simple look?
You're confused.
It's probably because she doesn't seem to like you. You shouldn't care about that though, it's not like you want her to like you. You don't even know her.
You shake your head at your own thoughts because you're thinking about her way too often for somebody you don't even know.
For the rest of the hour you only glance at her a few more times.
It's Kitty who reminds you that it's your birthday next week. It's not like you forgot. You rather pushed the thought away because last year you celebrated your birthday while you were in a happy relationship. This year you feel like skipping it. But of course Kitty won't let that happen as she's already reserved a table at an Italian restaurant down the street for you and the girls.
How are you supposed to say no to that? You'll put a smile on your face, laugh with Kitty and Marley and thank Quinn and Tina for coming to celebrate your birthday. Because it's not to be taken for granted that you have four new friends to celebrate your birthday with after only two months at dance school. And if it means that it will take your mind off your ex then you're actually looking forward to it.
The weekend passes way too fast but it's a fun one because Kitty drags you to her parents' house an hour away and you get to know her whole family. You realize that you miss your own family a whole lot but paying them a visit is something you'll avoid for as long as possible. Everything there would remind you of how your heart got broken by your first love.
Before you know it it's Thursday again and you're sitting on the floor of Cassandra July's classroom, watching her doing a performance that simply blows your mind. You've heard a lot about her and her professional career ending way too early because of an injury. But she's breathtaking and you can tell that the other students are just as impressed as you are.
"And that… is what you are going to do for the next couple weeks." Ms. July pants once the music fades and the students get back on their feet. "You are going to create your own dance number in groups of two. Don't bother making eye contact with your best friend, I have already made the teams by coincidence. Because if you want to make it as a professional dancer out there, you will sometimes have to dance with people you have never seen before and play a lovestory or something. You have to be comfortable with people touching your body, spinning you around and lifting you up in the air. Dancing… is always intimate."
You nod at Ms. July's words because it makes sense. You look around and wonder who you get teamed up with. The only person you know well in here is Tina but you guys never talk when it's just the two of you. You have the same friends and when you hang out she can be kind of fun. But mostly you don't really like her and you hope your partner will be someone else.
"Carter and Sawyer… Miller and Chang… Lopez and Hinson… Stuart and Hart…" Cassandra reads the names on notepad in her hand while you let your eyes wander through the students. You have no idea who Hinson is. There's a guy standing all alone, looking just as confused while all the other couples seem to have found each other. You walk up to him and hope he's your partner because he looks strong and well-trained.
"Is your last name Hinson?" You ask with a hopeful voice but the guy shakes his head. Disappointed you turn around. There's no one left except for…
Remy.
She was the first person you saw when you entered the room. Somehow you always notice her first when she's around. But her last name is Taylor, you know that. Still she comes over and scratches the back of her neck when she's right in front of you.
"I guess we're partners" She says with a voice that makes you think she's bit annoyed.
"But… she said Lopez and Hinson." You mutter and throw a glance over your shoulder to see if there's anyone else.
"Yeah because she likes to call me Dottie Hinson." Remy explains but you have no clue what that means.
"Why would she call you that?"
"Because of the movie."
"What movie?" Did you miss something?
"A League Of Their Own. With Madonna… the main character is called Dottie Hinson." You can tell that Remy is getting impatient and you decide that it's probably for the best to just drop it.
"Ok… "
She must see the confusion in your face and clicks her tongue.
"They play professional women's baseball in the movie." She goes on but you still don't get it.
"Huh?"
"Because of my baseball hats for god's sake!"
"Oh!" Now you get it. Sort of.
The two of you are standing in front of each other, not knowing what to say. While all the other couples are sitting together and coming up with ideas of what they plan to do, Remy and you just stand there.
"Uhm… I heard you had an injury" You begin and point to her knee. She's wearing shorts and a bandage around her knee joint. You don't know why you point it out but it's the only thing you could think of.
"That's right" She says.
"So… can you still dance? I mean if we're partners we probably have to come up with some good dance moves if we want to impress Ms. July."
You watch how Remy's eyebrows go up and her hands fly to her waist.
"You think I would be here if I couldn't dance?" She asks with a hint of hurt in her voice. "If you heard that story about my uncle getting me in... it's not true."
"What? No… of course you can dance. I was just wondering if your skills are maybe reduced at the moment." Why are you talking? Reduced? It sounds like you think she's incompetent or something.
Remy exhales an incredulous laugh. She looks down your body and back up to your eyes. It makes you kind of uncomfortable but you try to not let it show.
"Ok, Lima… I think it's time you and I clear some things." Remy gets interrupted by the bell signalizing the end of dance class. Did she just call you Lima? "If we want to come up with a decent dance routine, we have to know each other a little better. This classroom is empty after five o'clock. Meet me here and you'll see how much reduced I am not. But uh… if you want to see me dance, you better show me some of yours, too."
And with that she turns around to leave the classroom.
What the heck? How come she can boss you around like that? It's like whenever she's around, you turn into a little girl who doesn't know how words work. All you know is that Snixx would be holding her back by now and dance circles around her till her head's spinning to wipe that mocking smirk off her face.
It's five hours later when you step into the same dance room once again, this time it's empty except for one person; Remy with one of her many baseball caps on her head. Just like you she's wearing a top and sweatpants, her eyes checking you out when she hears you entering the room.
"I already thought you forgot our date" She mocks before turning to the audio equipment.
You huff with a look at the big watch on the wall. You're one minute late. But what annoys you is the fact that the first thing she says is not even close to a 'hello'. And why is she referring to a date? Does she know you like girls and makes fun of you? You wonder how she could know. It's not like you're making a secret of it but except for Kitty you haven't told anyone.
"So how is this going to go?" You ask. Suddenly you feel a wave of confidence rush through you and you have no idea where it's coming from. But if she thinks that she's going to be the one to dominate this whole assignment, she's wrong.
"You wanna show me some of your moves to impress me? Well then I'm wondering why you're still standing there…" You throw another look at the clock. "It's not like I've got all night."
You watch how Remy shakes her head before pushing a button on the CD player.
"Actually" She turns to face you. "Why don't you start, Lima?"
You're surprised when you hear Flo Rida's "Good Feeling" coming through the speakers. You kind of expected some sick streetdance beat or something and you almost laugh at her.
But she's standing there with her arms crossed in front of her chest, waiting for you to start dancing.
So you do.
You drop the water bottle you brought along and reach into your hair to free it from the tight ponytail. You shake your head from side to side before approaching the middle of the room.
It's bad luck for Remy that this happens to be one of your favorite songs. You have danced to it so many nights at clubs and alone in your room in front of a mirror. You can tell by the short glances you throw at her that she's watching every move you make and it pushes you in a way. Your moves flow and when you get closer to her, she even makes a step back.
You let your hands run over your stomach and triumph inwardly because Remy bites her lip.
Maybe she's into girls, too? Honestly you got a vibe the moment she ran into you on the first day you saw her.
For a minute you're caught off guard when she starts dancing to keep up with you. You even stop for a while to watch how she moves. You swallow because you already thought that she was good but she's really good.
Before your mouth falls open you manage to pull yourself together and jump back into it. Both of you are trying to top and impress the other but no matter how hard you try to fight for dominance, you can't deny that it feels kind of awesome and that your dance styles match pretty well.
When you get closer, you dare to look up to her eyes. She's not looking into your face but somewhere at your chest or stomach, you're not sure. You almost tell her that your eyes are up there but then again you don't know how she'd react.
You don't know how it happens but her right hand is suddenly on your waist and one of your arms snakes around her shoulders. It's how you'd dance with someone at a club with a drink in your hand but you're both perfectly sober. At least you think she is. In fact you can feel her breath against your neck and you're sure you'd smell the alcohol if she was drunk.
But she's not and the feeling of her hand on your waist makes your cheeks feel hot. When your thigh bumps into hers and finally her brown eyes shoot up to meet yours, you get that feeling in the pit of your stomach.
You're worried that you're going to embarrass yourself because your knees are getting weaker. Your hand holds on bit tighter on her shoulder and you swallow when you see her lips parting. Shouldn't you be dancing around each other or something? This is weirdly intimate for a first dance because her hand runs over your lower back and your breath is hitching.
You're kind of glad that the song is coming to an end. Remy steps away from you eventually and touches her hat when she looks up into your face.
"It's uh… yeah. I guess we can work together." She says with a nod and clears her throat.
"You think we'll come up with a good performance?" You ask. You almost forgot that this is why you're here.
"Sure. Yup" She claps her hands together and then pays her attention to the audio equipment to get her CD back. "I'll see you in class, I guess."
You're standing there, blinking several times. That's all?
"Should we… should we meet up sometime in the evening so we can practice together? I doubt that once a week in class will be enough. I think Ms. July expects a lot." You explain. Remy faces you and nods slowly.
"Yeah I guess… I'll get back to you."
You frown because what kind of answer is that? It's not like you're her assistant or something. You're in this together and need to make up a time and a place to meet. Your eyes follow her when she grabs her bag and makes quick steps towards the exit.
"Is that all?" You ask incredulously. She looks over her shoulder with a shrug.
"Night, Lima" Is her answer and before you can ask how the hell she knows you're from Lima, she's gone.
What the hell?
Why does she confuse you so badly? First she acts all annoyed whenever she sees you, then she basically feels you up while you're dancing and then she's back to being the cruel bitch you met on the first day.
You seriously can't put a finger on what it is. Is she gay? Or completely straight? You've been wrong in the past about girls that you were so sure of. Maybe she has a boyfriend and will tell him that she's uncomfortable with having you as her dance partner.
But then again she was clearly staring at your boobs before.
You're confused. That's all you know.
Let me know what you think :)
