![]() The Cat Came Back: The biggest representation of this would, perhaps, be Calypsir. Having racked up a grand total of eleven deaths in one roleplay alone, his reputation to never stay dead is almost as widely known as he is... and it's probably going to come here too. 4/13/2012 #31 |
![]() Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Isaac. Despite having weapons of massive destructive power, he's never actually caused Destruction, or hurt people intentionally. He's too nice and too child-like. 4/13/2012 . Edited 4/13/2012 #32A**kicking equals Authority: To reinforce the one by Chaos earlier. Attention Deficit.....Ooh Shiny: Jenna, I'm sorry Em, but Once I read this she came to mind xD |
![]() Opposites Attract - Feliciano and Ludwig. Feliciano is a happy ball of energy and Ludwig's quiet, calm and serious, Good is Not Nice - Rachel loves insulting everyone, regularly abuses her familiars, and picks fights to amuse herself. But she's undoubtedly on the good side. Our Vampires Are Different - All vampires in this roleplay. 4/13/2012 #33 |
![]() The Big Bad: Varies for different arcs. In Earth, Jekyll and Zlade seem to share this position. For the Northern War (can't be called Dragon-Keeper war, since plot twists were thrown in) arc, Tiamat is this, although he works behind the scenes. For the arc involving Edgar's group, presumably Baron Selwyn is this. 4/13/2012 #34Final Boss: For each arc. Northern War, it'll likely be Scorpio and Fineis; and/or Tiamat. For Earth's plot, it'll likely be Jekyll or Zlade. |
![]() Fake Shemps: Several of the peons get played by different RPers at different points. 4/14/2012 #35 |
![]() 'Be Quiet' Nudge - A sort of 'physical' trope.. Irene gets this.....alot. 4/14/2012 #36 |
![]() Awesome, but Impractical: Bahamut's ZERO form wouldn't be this, were it not for the drawbacks (e.g. the ridiculously short time span it lasts and the fact he's virtually powerless for a period after using it.) 4/14/2012 #37(Can edit to include more.) |
![]() Facepalm: Jill's reaction to Caius not knowing about Nachos. 5/07/2012 #38Right for the Wrong Reasons: Gabriel is right, Caius is deceiving them, but not because he's evil. It's because he's scared. |
![]() The Reason You Suck Speech: Several. The Doctor gives Scorpio one while attempting to convince him not to fight the Dragons, Bahamut and Tiamat exchange these on a regular basis, Jekyll tends to give variants of this to his subordinates every so often, Raven delivers these in small doses to most people she knows... 5/08/2012 #39 |
![]() Love Epiphany: Romano to Jill (Also a case of UST), Angel to Lucian (Mutual). Aria to Dante (Mutual?), Trace to Haruka (One-sided) (Love Epiphany is when a character realizes they love another character. Not them confessing so the characters above DO NOT have to be together.] 5/12/2012 #40 |
![]() Nice Guy: Trace, in every sense of the word. Turn the other Cheek: Once again, Trace. Just ask Maeve or Haru. One just tried to make him kill everyone while the other literally RAN HIM THROUGH THE HEART WITH A SWORD OF DIAMOND. And yet he doesnt burn them alive. 5/15/2012 #41 |
![]() Magically-Binding Contract: Between Rachel and Maeve. 5/15/2012 #42 |
![]() Idiot Hero: Trace, yet again. Its kinda obvious considering his personality. Yet it was funny when the Bull Orphenoc just backhands him like he owed him money. 5/16/2012 #43 |
![]() Deus ex Machina: Watts. He always seems to be able to craft anything that a person needs to overcome an impossible task. 5/17/2012 #44 |
![]() So Deus ex Machina isn't all that bad. 5/17/2012 #45 |
![]() Well, Deus ex Machina is only bad in the sense that people think it's "lame". Basically it's a way to guarantee a "happy ending" in spite of impossible odds. I think the modern day equivalent is "The Calvary Arrives", alluding to the fact that in old Westerns, the cowboys/gunslingers would be overwhelmed by opponents and doomed to die...until a bunch of reinforcements show up out of nowhere and kill all the bad guys. What Watts did recently is actually a bit similar to the classic example of Deus ex Machina from Greek literature. I forgot the story exactly, but Euripedes is credited with creating it. He had a play where a king was doomed to die. The only possible thing that could save him is if his beautiful and innocent wife gave up her life in his place, which she did. And so it seems to be a typical Greek tragedy...until, all of the sudden, Hercules shows up, hears the story, and volunteers to personally go to the Underworld, beat up the guards, and bring the king's wife's soul back to the land of the living. (This isn't anything terrific...after all, Hercules had already done it once as one of his Twelve Labors.) He does and there's a happy ending. 5/17/2012 #46 |
![]() Other classic examples is how the unstoppable disease in "The Andromeda Strain" simply evolves into a neutral organism. In "The War of the Worlds", after all of mankind's modern technology is proven all but useless, simple Earth-bound microorganisms infect the Martians and kill them. In "Lord of the Flies", the protagonist would have died a violent death and the remaining children would have remained savages if some navy ship hadn't showed up just in time. (Although Golding makes the interesting point, "Now those same navy people are going off into a world war...who's going to save them?") More recent examples are the endings of several Harry Potter books. In the first book, Harry passes out and would have been killed by Voldemort if Dumbledore hadn't returned in time (although the movie version eliminated this). In the second book, Fawkes brings in the Sorting Hat which just happens to have a sword in it, not to mention the fact Fawkes is able to cure basilisk venom. In the fourth book, the Prior Incantantum effect spares Harry's life (although this one is debatable for those of you who read the seventh book...). In the fifth book, the Order of the Phoenix is the proverbial cavalry that arrives just as the kids are about to get killed by Death Eaters. 5/17/2012 #47 |
![]() Skyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! You gave it awaaaaaaayyyyyy! I'm still reading the "Andromeda Strain" XP 5/17/2012 #48 |
![]() ...Oops. Well, technically, I didn't give everything away, if the book ends the same way as the movie did... :P 5/17/2012 #49 |
![]() Well, I'll find out soon. Though the Movie might have given a different ending, like they did with "Nightjohn" 5/17/2012 #50 |
![]() Relationship Upgrade!- Romano/Jill. Can be edited to add new pairings. 5/17/2012 #51 |
