Paine has a very bumpy past. Next thing she knows, a knife inscribed with her name has been found in Besaid. When Paine goes missing, Rikku goes off to find her, and Yuna soon follows. On the way, a girl named Claude Kilari is connected to Paine's absence, but Yuna and Rikku find out that Paine made a promise to Claude that if she ever needed her, just stab it in a tree at Besaid Island.

But just as things were getting better, things are turning for the worst, when an unknown entity surrounds Spira, and they find out it was all Paine's and Claude's doing! When Rikku finds Paine in the Bevelle Underground, Paine never said a word. Her sword did all the talking, soon after squaring off, Paine breaks the arm of Rikku and slashing her across the stomach.

As Rikku lays to rest in the cabin of the Celsius, Yuna goes back to find Paine and get her back too. When she finds a suspicious switch in the Bevelle Underground, she finally finds Paine, but Claude as well. Claude's weapons are guns and a huge blade with the word 'Rogue' on it. All Yuna wanted was Paine to come back on the Celsius, but Claude tells her that Paine had prmoised her this when she was still little, in a fighting school. Paine had saved Claude's life once and Claude had wanted to make it up to her. And thus, the whole knife thing came about.

Now Claude grew up to be someone who wanted to kill Yuna, because she had been stealing too much of the limelight. Since she couldn't do it alone, she had called upon Paine to help. When Claude pointed her gun to Yuna and was about to fire, in comes Rikku, battered from her battle with Paine earlier.
