@Arisa: I always loved school. In fact, I wanted school 365 days a year. But my private school principal never let me. Could have been able to graduate even earlier if he let me. :-)

I mostly want more school due to political reasons. But yes, I do love learning. Learning helps your mind grow. :)

T-T i miss my old school, the public one swears (even though we're not supposed to)

Firstly I'd like to congratulate the Queen on ruling this crazy little island (and electively ruling a number of other nations) for 60 years *waves small Union Jack and whistles the only verse of God Save the Queen that she knows*

Secondly, I know of no European schools which don't have a summer holiday. We had a decent sized summer holiday (although it started and finished later than yours do. Our schools still have another half term left of school).

the public one swears (even though we're not supposed to)

I went to public school for 14 years in a fairly rough area and yeah, that happens. I think I knew all the major words by like 6/7 (mostly due to thirteen year old boys who thought it was hilarious to teach the rather cherubic child that I was to swear like a sailor). Plus, as long as you didn't swear directly at a teacher the worst you'd get was a mild 'language!' because they knew there is no way they were actually going to be able to stop us swearing.

Then I went to public sixth-form (age 16-18) where even the teachers swore and few people turned a hair if I started using the f-word as every other word in a sentence, or even as every single word in a sentence.

I just find it hilarious that saying slang words for 'have sex' (which is a completely natural human function) or 'faeces' (again, completely natural human function) or parts of the body (which hey, guess what, naturally human) gets people so up in arms. The words only have the meaning that you give them and the more I use them, the more people become accustomed to them and the less effective they become. Also the 'worse' swear words tend to be the less gender oriented ones (which I don't use because being compared to a gay person or a woman should not be an insult) which is why I use them more.

Plus it's been proven that swearing helps you regulate pain. Which completely justifies the torrent of swearing if I so much as bump myself.

School's fun, but I'm glad it's out.

Question -- DAR, here in the States, "public" means a school funded by taxpayer dollars that everyone can go to. You don't pay fees or tuition, room or board, or anything like that. In the UK, "public" means a privately run school, right? One that you have to pay tuition to attend? Our compulsory education begins in Kindergarten (about age 5) to "Senior" in "high school" which is about 16 or 17.

17 to 18 is more like it. 16s only get to senior year if they are in special courses or they were just really young when they started.

Technically yeah, we have public schools (which are private) and state schools (which are open to everybody) but that always confused me so I just refer to them as public and private. It's a personal idiosyncrasy.

Our compulsory education begins in Kindergarten (about age 5) to "Senior" in "high school" which is about 16 or 17.

Ours starts in Reception (age 4/5 depending on when your birthday is, although Reception isn't compulsory) and compulsory education ends at 16 at the end of secondary school after completing your GCSE's. Most people continue on to college/sixth-form which is two years long and ends with your A Levels and then go off to university. I believe the government is changing it to make college compulsory.

I said 14 years because I was 4 going on 5 when I started school full time and 18 going on 19 when I finished my A Levels and then went off to University.

Whoa. I didn't realize they had changed it back until Wilf mentioned it. The English school system confuses me.

In response to @nochance's questions about AO3,

AO3 is Archive of Our Own, operated by the Organization for Transformative Works, which is a non profit entity dedicated to the preservation of fan works. It is privately owned, open source, no ads, fan-run, and has very, very liberal posting policies. The members tend to be older and the quality of the fic tends to generally be better, and the general readers are very different from what you would find over here, at least in the Narnia fandom. A lot of really good Narnia authors only post there. There tends to be much less feedback as well and overall it's less interactive. Most of the major fan-run challenges, contests, memes, remixes, and other content, are hosted there and/or Live Journal. The Yuletide challenge for instance is now on AO3, which is an annual challenge for writing stories in small fandoms.

I may just stick here with fanfic.net. Even with all the changes, it's still the main streamer of fanfiction.

Ditto that. Plus, I'm pretty comfy on here, even if I'm not wild about the changes.

Ok. Cool. First, can you show me what you can do? I would like a cover for my Narnia falling to Telmar fic. An eagle would be nice, considering what just happened in the latest chapter.

I hate British weather.

Somebody needs to inform it that it is almost the middle of June and therefore rain and gale force winds are really not appropriate. Especially since I have to keep working through it and it's ridiculously hard to hand over leaflets and notes when your stall is about take off like a kite.

Seriously. I spent about four hours sitting on the front of this thing to prevent it taking off.

Also I need to learn to walk again. I keep falling over. I look like a five year old with scraped knees.

Ugh, tired and sore. But I only have one more day and I just keep focusing on the money. I'm getting paid at the end of the month. I'm getting paid at the end of the month. I'm getting paid at the end of the month.

What are you getting paid to do Discord? By the way it sounds, it sounds hardly worth it.

Just pull through, you can do it.

I'm selling programmes for a big agricultural show that's going on at the moment. It's a three day job, fairly easy and pays well above minimum wage per hour. Plus I get free tickets for it so if I'm able to knock off early I can wander around as much as I like and the tickets are pretty expensive.

Though I have jokingly asked for hazard pay for today. Yesterday wasn't too bad and tomorrow's supposed to be sunny (by British standards). It was just today, really.

It's not a long term job, more an 'oooh, I can work that into my schedule and hey extra money'. It's paying off my summer holiday and some extra stuff.

@Wilf: I don't know how soon I'd be able to come up with something for you (I also haven't forgotten that you wanted an avvie/siggy set for said fic either), but here are a couple samples of what I'm capable of (be sure to remove the spaces in the addresses):

i1060.photobucket. com /albums/t441/Ariel_of_Narnia/Aslan28.jpg (simple wallpaper)

i1060.photobucket. com /albums/t441/Ariel_of_Narnia/LoveCrucifiedArosesiggy.jpg (siggy)

i1060.photobucket. com /albums/t441/Ariel_of_Narnia/Swanwhite/7dwarfs/foxglove.jpg ("concept art" for an extremely minor fic character).

I've not played with Photoshop for hours on end either, so I'm not exactly pro at it, but I know more now than I did before.

Afraid every time I try copying and pasting the links into my bar, nothing comes up. Will you send them to me via TLC PM?

6/08/2012 #479

Take out the spaces in the addresses first. (There are spaces before and after the "com" part.)

I'll still send 'em through TLC though for you. :-)

(edit: erm, uno problemo. TLC seems to be temporarily down...)
