GiftedTopic: Combined Life Action and Animation Movies Okay, we all know these were Disney's specialty and Walt Disney started this with the Laugh-O-Grams from Alice's Wonderland (black and white cartoon shorts showing a real little girl named named Alice and her adventures with cartoons)So what do you think about these certain types of movies and how many have you seen? List of combined Life Action and Animation Movies: The Reluctant Dragon (1941) Victory Through Air Power (1943) (On DVD part of a Wartime Collection for the Walt Disney Treasures) Song of the South (1946) (Not Released) (To find out more about this forbidden Disney movie, head to songofthesouth.net. While your there, sign the petition to get this movie released!) So Dear To My Heart (1949) Mary Poppins (1964) Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971) Pete's Dragon (1977) Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) Enchanted (2007) (Tentative Release Date is: November 2, 2007) (This movie shall start in 2-D animation as a tribute to the past Disney films and then be switched to live-action) I've so far seen So Dear to My Heart, Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Pete's Dragon, andf Who FRamed Roger Rabbit. I love these type of movies and hope there will be more in the future (I also hope that Disney will continue their 2-D animation movies). I also really wanna see Song of the South. So what have you seen and what do you think? | #1 Jul 10th 2006, 12:12pm

Brent-KaI'm not sure how I feel about it all, it's sort of hit or miss. Wore out the tape of Bedknobs and Broomsticks though, and I was renting it on top of that. ^_^; I will say one thing about the "Alice" shorts though. That cat partner of hers? Wayyy too close to Felix.....| #2 Jul 29th 2006, 12:57pm

Gifted*chuckle* I'm always watching Bedknocks and Broomsticks. Lucky for me I have it on DVD, but if I had it on tape, it would be worn out too.I haven't seen any of the Alice Comedies Shorts, but I love drawing Virginia Davis as Alice. And yes, Julius (that cat character) looks a lot like Felix. |
|
Brent-KaI only saw a couple myself. Before Disney Channel moved in to serving pre-teens solely, they featured a couple on their "Vault Disney" block. Surprisingly, they're mildly entertaining, especially for silent films. |
|
GiftedI wish Vault Disney would show on Disney Channel again. I don't remember when it stopped, but I think it would be kinda interesting to see old stuff.I heard you can download these shorts online in forgein languages. I can barely speak Japanese so I definitely don't wanna try that. They use one of the Alice posters on the Disney Treasure Collection: Disney Rarities. It's not on Netflix and I haven't seen it anywhere in rental stores. Anyone seen it and can tell me what's on it before I buy it? |
|
Brent-KaWait, you mean the dialouge cards/word balloons themselves are in Japanese? That's...different. Especially since those were silent movies. They're not going to dub them.According to Amazon, there are at least 7 Alice shorts on the collection, 4 of them with Ms. Davis. The rest seems to be the stuff they showed on Vault Disney, the experimental animations that were basically "filler" doing the 40's and 50's. It's really interesting stuff though. (And Ben and Me is on there. I haven't seen that since I was like 4.) There are DVD releases featuring a multitude of Alice shorts I saw at Buyindies.com (Although to be truthful, I question their legitimacy. How come they're nowhere else?) And as a bit of trivia, according to Wikipedia, the distributor for the Alice shorts was the same guy who worked for Pat Sullivan. Turns out Julius' appearance to Felix wasn't accidental, it was a marketing gimmick. Edit---Ugh, I was hoping someone on the 'net would have these shorts loaded SOMEWHERE. After completely milking Google for all it's worth, all I could find was a torrent of apparently every last Laugh-o-Gram cartoon plus the Alice shorts. If you'd like the link I'd give to ya via PM (Provided of course, you know how to work torrents ^_^) but be warned, it's 2 gigs total. | #6 Aug 02nd 2006, 8:35pm . Edited Aug 03rd 2006, 9:40am

GiftedYeah, the word balloons. Though not in Japanese. I meant that I only spoke a bit of Japanese and that otherwise I don't read or speak other languages (I know, I didn't say that clearly enough). I have heard their in Dutch, German, and a few other European languages.Ugh, I have no idea what torrents are and I have like no more room on the computer. Thank you so much for the offer though. Means alot that you actually searched it up! I myself have no patience for Google. I think I'll buy the Disney Rarities DVD. I checked out BuyIndies.com as well and I never heard of 1920s Alice Comedies Volume 1. I'm was trying to search Disney.go.com to see if it really is such a thing, but the search is so darn stubborn! I have found something just like it though on Ebay. Search RARE Disney Alice Comedies 1 DVD. The seller even has a Alice Comedies 2 and 3. These DVDs are purely home-made on DVD-R discs. So that's the reason it's no where else. Despite being unoffical, it's very tempting by looking at all the cartoons listed. | #7 Aug 03rd 2006, 12:23am

BubblyShell22I've seen Pete's Dragon, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Mary Poppins. These were pretty good movies, although I got tired of Pete's Dragon. That's my sister's favorite. I loved Bedknobs and the other ones I mentioned. They rocked.| #8 Oct 16th 2006, 10:12am

GiftedOh yes and one more thing about the Alice Comedies. You can watch the first episode on youtube by searching Alice's Wonderland, Alice in Wonderland, or Disney's Alice in Wonderland. |
|
Brent-KaOh sure NOW they add them. ^_^; I forgot how much I enjoyed these things though. They really are a prime example of what silent films should be, a visual experience. (Woo-hoo! I actually said something deep for once!)| #10 May 06th 2007, 11:23pm

Brent-Ka(I know I'm breaking my own sacred rule of never double posting, but I wanted to make sure this got noticed)Hey Gifted, are the Alice Comedies in the public domain? I'd be willing to nab a few episodes from the torrent and upload 'em to Youtube, but (for once) my lapsed sense of morals are kicking in.... | #11 Jun 30th 2007, 8:54pm

GiftedI'm not really sure. I have seen a few episodes up there (I found them once, but didn't see them again).I'll try to check something out. I'll edit back later. EDIT: According to wikipedia, it depends on copyright. If it isn't, it would definetly be in public domain now (I think...), but who knows if Disney still renews the copyright. | #12 Jul 02nd 2007, 2:12am . Edited Jul 02nd 2007, 2:20am

Brent-KaThey go the extra mile to keep Mickey's of course, but I think this is relatively safe. I'm going for the whole bag of potatoes on this one and getting all the Laugh-o-Gram cartoons....Great. Only 3 days of downloading left. ^_^; I'll post a link when I'm finished of course.| #13 Jul 02nd 2007, 3:50pm

Brent-KaBleh. Man, I was slow on the uptake. Only one video uploaded so far, but more are coming as soon as I can stomach to go through the submission process again. What the beans takes 8 hours to upload a 7 minute video? It's just ARGHH!Anyway user address is http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=Crayshen. Expect to see a heck of lot more, except for Tommy Tucker's Tooth which exceeds the now super-enforced time limit by a scant few seconds, so no silent dental hygiene films for you! (Not a big loss, the thing nearly put me to sleep. Educational films weren't fun in high school and they weren't fun in the 20's either I guess) | #15 Jul 17th 2007, 1:26pm

Brent-KaYeah it was. I just noticed too that they cut out the 3 second scene of the Communist Chicken arriving. He's actually a buzzard from Russia. Political correctness perhaps? Still it did have a nice number of puns out there to carry it through.| #17 Jul 17th 2007, 3:44pm

Brent-KaOh yeah, forgot about that one. It's been a while since I saw it though, was there actual interaction between the two or was it just a movie superimposed on the background? I'm thinkin' both for some reason.| #19 Dec 25th 2007, 7:45pm

GiftedOh, I can't believe I forgot that! That's means I'm missing the sequel and the movie that Blame it on the Samba is too. I had a feeling there was something I was forgetting. |
