Topic: Horrible Awful Fanfiction Trends That Make You Want to Hurl
You know you love them.

My favorite is rapist!Irvine. Because he’s a flirt and you KNOW all guys who flirt rape not only their girlfriends but just about anyone within arm’s-length.

What’s YOUR favorite horrible awful fanfiction trend that makes you want to hurl?

Irvine as a rapist is one, yes.

Seifer/Quistis. (Yeah yeah, I know this one is popular, I'm just saying it's not usually my taste ;P)

Probably all the high school or really out there AU stories that are bouncing around now. Nothing against anyone who writes them, but I got into this fandom to read about, well, the source material. I don't think yanking out the characters and sticking them in the high school setting or as male strippers or whatever really does that, so I usually pass. I much prefer either the "canon universe" or interesting AU takes on that canon, such as that old fic by Mess where Irvine's bullet really did kill Edea.

Damn but I'd wished she'd finished that one; it prompted about twenty billion bad knockoffs. Mess was excellent. (I have the only five paragraphs she ever did of a Fujin lemon. Rock on.)

I think that the "THE FF8 ARE IN THE MODERN WORLD" fics are the ones that get me the most; or just the ones that treat Balamb Garden like some kind of creepy college lawltastic funtime with a cheerleading team.

Well, the "LOL LUK WAT HAPPENZ IF I GOT TRANSPORTED INTO TEH FF8 WURLD!1" may be harmless fun, I guess, but they probably strike me as being the most moronic. It's even worse when people write themselves into the story in a *serious* context.

I also tend to dislike the fics where one of the minor characters (usually Zell, Selphie or Quistis) is pushed centre stage as a depressive, down-and-out loser who keeps falling on hard times throughout. There are some exceptionally angsty fanfic writers out there who seem to enjoy torturing a character to the nth degree in order to inspire some sympathy from the reader (yes, these usually involve one of the "heroes of the world" becoming a stripper or a manic depressive or just slitting their wrists only to contract cancer after they recover, etc.).

Uh, yeah. That's about it. I also prefer the more canonical stories as opposed to "AU: Squall is _______, Rinoa is _______ - let's see what happens!!"

When the author has Squall and Rinoa break up just so Squall can find "his true love" and live happily ever after. Double points if this involves yaoi or an original character. Triple points if this involves yaoi AND an original character. It's the lack of motivation/explantion for the initial breakup that really gets me, too. They break up "just cuz." As in "just cuz the author wants him to have sex with someone else."

And on that note, Merry Hynemas everybody (boy, that DOES sound retarded, doesn't it?)

Haha. Merry Hynemas indeed. I was actually thinking of using that in an upcoming FFVIII fic of mine at one point. *slap to self*

I just wanted something Christmas-y. Y'know, festive and fun and sparkly - mainly because Selphie would be the focus of the story at that point. Maybe I should alter it into a Chinese New Year with Christmas themes type celebration at the end of December.

But enough about that, back onto another thing I've discovered I hate: suicide fics that are written from deep within the author's whiny, broken emo heart. Like, when characters decide to kill themselves because "ppl r bein meen 2 tehm" (or for just no apparent reason at all - yes, some of them feel it's OK to just exclude all explanation for, well, everything).

Yeah. Christmas makes me realise everything I hate about everything (or maybe it's the champagne...).

It's because they're written by angsty teenagers who wanna kill themselves. No, no, that's mean and unfair, it's angsty teenagers who don't wanna kill themselves but want the attention that would come from trying to kill themself. I wanna write a suicide fic, where Seifer comes in as *insert angsty character here* is holding a gun to their head and he just stares, tells them to "suck it up", then leaves. With their meatball sub. (That is, of course, assuming that Seifer isn't the fellow with the gun to his head...)

But, personally, sans all the fics written by people who just haven't learned how to write that well yet, I would say my least favorite is the fics that try to be.. what's the word I'm looking for.. Epic, I guess. Overdone. Grand confrontations where beautiful people spout declarations of love or words of pure hatred. I mean, when was the last time you actually said what you really mean about something important to you? People aren't like that. I want something more understated, you know? And I don't always want to be spoon fed what's really going on.

I wouldn't say that there is any one style of fiction that I hate the most, but I must say that I've run into some depresseing stuff in here.

Writing styles are the thing that annoys me even though I've not yet managed to perfect my own. People use sectuple spacing, generally horrible grammar and tend to write something that just popped into their minds, writing stuff that pretty much rapes the personalities of the characters. Minor adjustments are fine, or major adjustments if they're explained properly but for no apparent reason people just... I'm ranting. You got the point by now.

I find myself agreeing with every single word written here here. But I have to say, the worst is when author say 'whatif teh FF8 gang weer transpotted 2 the reel world?' I gets on my nerves and it does my head in.

Everyone nailed most annoying ideas that pop into peoples head.

But a good check list to avoid things like that is to check the summary. If over half the summary merely involves pairing tags, avoid it like a plague.

Ah. I got one. Though its not really an idea.

Authors going over board on either descriptions or just trying too hard to be poetic. It fits sometimes, but when half a chapter is Squall's position on a hill.... Or how Rinoa slowly walks up the hill to meet him..

*groan*

Character bashing. If you hate a character that much, why spend your precious time writing about them? I just don't see the point.

I totally hate songfics wherein the author just basically grabs the lyrics of a song and makes the characters say/do it without so much as a background or story. If the author was too lazy to do a real fic then she/he shouldn't have posted anything at all. It just totally ruins your readers' mood. I've read a couple of those recently and I had to resist the urge to flame them like there's no tomorrow. Grrr.
