Topic: Keeping Characters In Character
Here's a question I was going to post at TWoP before the thread closed:

When writing a fic, what do you do to make sure that you keep your characters in-character? There are too many times where my version of House is much darker than he is on the show and I have recieved criticism for that.

I know that part of writing the fic is researching the character - watching the DVDs, reading the boards, betaing, editing, etc... - but what does everyone else do as well to make sure the characters stay similar to how they are on the show? How much does that even matter in fanfic, especially something that is more AU or further away from the realm of the show itself?

I think you can really only take a general idea from the show and run with that. Many people call any original plot AU, but that seems very limited. The tricky part is writing an original plot but keeping the characters in character - and say if it was a dark plot they may react darkly to it. The writer can only hope they have a good interpretation of them.

I view the characters on the show as steping off points, you can never exactly predict what they might do in fic, but you can & should then try & make them internally consistent within the fic & to a reasonable degree with the show. Otherwise its just as body named House, it's not "House". (does that make sense?). And AU can work with that. Andrealyn writes the most amazing AU Robert as Roberta pieces (I can provide links if anyone wants), completely gender bending & yet also absolutely recognizable as Chase in the way s/he reacts to House, Wilson & everyone else.
