http://www.bikermice.com for decembergirl (Survivor's Log) and

Morning for her beautiful drawings, Decembergirl for her beautiful drawings and so many others...

Question: does anybody ever enters these forums ever... Or am I the only one left?

Oh, yes, Fairdrea... Yes, I read that one - she's got masses of potential. Knows her bikes, could be really superb one day. What really niggled me was the fact that she describes her characters too much. She said that Jaiden Sterling has purple eyes sixteen times in the course of one story. Why do all mary-sues have purple eyes? It was a pretty good story, though.

Purple is old hat. Purple just screams 'This character is a Mary-Sue!' - I mean, do you honestly know anyone who really has purple eyes? And are the eyes important in the story? The most beautiful eyes of any person I know are velvet brown - mine are grey, occasionally teal green, and I'm very proud of them. I know someone whose eyes are blue with flecks of brown, they're fantastic eyes too. Purple got old years ago. Jade green is nearly as bad. It just tells me that the writer is having trouble making their character interesting. Why not give her a nervous twitch or big vocabulary or a tendency to mood swings or make her sleepwalk or even just make her a total wiseass? Something that will make me give a damn whether she lives or dies.

Sorry. This purple eyes thing has been getting on my tail for, oh, must be nearly ten years now.

I think blue in eye colour is just boring.. Because so many people have that, including me xD

And I also like purple because purple coloured clothes look best on me :) Green too. Oh, and orange! Eyes that colour (green, orange) would be hot as heck :P *thinks of buying green or orange coloured contact lenses*

But there are so many shades of blue:

Ice; midnight; dark; indigo; light; greybleu and so on and so on.

Purple is fun... but not everything in purple. Just a little accent here and there. That's my way of writing (and I haven't written many things yet, most stories are abandoned even as I speak - I like to read)

something must have been very wrong with me tonight... I wonder...

what was in that banana smoothie I just drunk? Whisky?

*Goes of in attempt to find sister who made this evil smoothie* Hick-up!

Right - so isn't it better that the heroine has midnight eyes or eyes like ice, or maybe eyes like a stormy sky or a spring sky or perhaps eyes like fresh leaves or emeralds or chocolate or soft brown velvet? Purple, or violet - that's just dull. Eyes like amethysts I could maybe handle just the once, but nobody ever tries to make it imaginative, they just say violet.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hmm, OC's and their eyes! I know when writing OC's, I tend to try not to describe their appearance at all. It's rarely important. It *might* matter if the OC was not set in a fanfic universe, but an OC is there to facilitate the story, not to overshadow the other characters. Some things are better left to the imagination. Not that it's not good to put in a couple of little details - hair colour or length perhaps, or a very brief reference to eye colour, or prominant facial scars. But no need to go into pages of description.

Hear, hear! You only need description if it's actually a plot point in itself!

Or a new character no one knows about. I hate it to read something and not knowing what the new characters look like or what their attitude is like. In those cases, I read something else.

Besides, if you just have a way to small chapter, you can create a bigger chapter if you give a character description. Just like people, characters can change their style of clothing, hairdo's and who knows what more.

No, you get the attitude from the way they're written and if you really need to know the way they look then yes, telling them is OK but otherwise why not let the reader form an impression? I've read a load of books where a characterw wasn't described till the middle of the book and I STILL knew what they looked like.

Of course, what else gets my goat is when people say things like someone has 'grey-coloured fur' - as if we didn't know grey was a colour.

to some, grey isn't a colour, but a mixture of black and white in different shades. It could be used as a topic with meaningless discussions. But on the other hand... you get to see different styles of writing and use of words and so on and so on.

Sometimes I think: hey, that person's english is second language and not first. Especially Dutch, soooo darn easy if I do say so myself. ^^ (have them to talk English, most of the times it sounds so bad, it's funny) French are also easy to discover, like the Finnish, German and the Greek.

But no character discription from the beginning of a book? Than I loose interest in the book, no matter how interesting it will become and lay the book aside.

Also, not everyone is into BMFM or TMNT or Narnia or LOTR or (and so on) so good character descriptions from time to time are useful - not every chapter. In that way you can gain acces to a lot of readers who just don't know everything about it or just like the story.

Hi, I couldn't resist adding my vote for this section. Currently my favorites are Morning, Bookworm and FairDrea. They all ship my favorite couple Throttle/Charlie. There are a couple more from other sites but unfortunatly those sites are now closed.

Slightly off-topic - Christ, I haven't been in here for over a year. I have so been neglecting this place. Some of you know I've been chillin' over at The Station - where I decided my new favourite BMFM writer is The Prodigal Fan. Does he post here? I don't think he does.

Anyway - Happy New Year, y'all!

I don't think he does post here - never seen him around FF. He might have some of his stories posted on dA, but heck, I can't remember what his user name over there is!

EDIT: And I forgot - a happy New Year to everyone! *hugs* Have fun!
