tehe, yeah nutella is just awesome, but i dont really think its good for you...

but serously; why do you buy sandwiches? i dont understand. why not just make them yourself?

anyway, i suppose i should be off to bed now although im a tad enthralled by doctor who which is playing on tv at the moment... i'll see how i go

#401 Jul 07th, 4:16am
lexophile42

I get the buying sandwiches bit, sometimes you're on the run and don't have time to make a sammi, or you're out to eat and there's a BLT on the menu that just sounds fantastic... no matter what Rob Schneider has to say about BLT's, they're still one of my faves at Denny's.

I know in the States, generally speaking, the sandwiches are really good if you go to the right place. Subway, Scholtsky's, Jason's Deli, Denny's, Chik-fil-A, Einstein's Bros., Which Wich, and there're a few others that have really exceptional sandwiches. I've got no idea why I'm listing places to buy really good sandwiches.... but hey, why not, right?

I buy sandwiches because I'm crap at making them XD (don't ask, I am the worst cook in all of history. lmao) I prefer rolls though. And rolls are cheaper where I stay, as well, maybe why I like them more, I dunno. x)

I've got one thing to say, Kayee... I totally love your icon!!! XD

Thanks XD I made it on Saturday night lmao. I couldn't resist x)

I've drawn so many of those it's not even funny!

I also drew my icon... all he needs now is his own Rose... which will be the next one that I put up for my avatar pic thing.

#406 Jul 07th, 12:42pm
dogwithnonose

I was wondering if you'd drawn it or not, it's really good! Much better than anything I could do! XD

Yeah, you should give him his own Rose, make him happy XD

I'll probably have a new one by the time I get back from vacation in California... and then i'll have access to a scanner again! yay for technology!

i suppose everyones in bed now but...

yes i cant make sandwiches either, for school i use two pieces of frozen bread and slap on a bit of peanut butter, then by the time i get to school the bread is unfrozen and the sandwich is there.

omg, subway? subway has the WORST sandwiches ever. ugh! my brother and my dad love it but i cant go in there, it all smells so terrible. but then again, i hate mcdonalds and every other fast food place so what woud i know?

how do you made these things? i cant draw or do anything special on the computer, i tried to do this thing with the doctor and then i put a pic of me in next to him but it failed miserably. very miserably, it was horrible. but i love both your icons, i just cant do anything remotely like them :D

Ms. D Fied

I agree. I can't walk into any fast food chains without wanting to vomit. Especially KFC...ugh. I'm not a big sandwich eater myself. When I was younger I would make PB sandwiches for school but that's about it...and the occasional fluffanutter.

Hey tigerwriter,

I use a program called Paint Shop Pro. I took a screenshot of the scene on iPlayer and then cropped it down and put a small heart on it. There are other programs you can use, though, like Adobe Photoshop. You could probably use paint but i'm crap on that XD

Firebreathing Fishies

Hi! I don't mean to blunder in on your conversation and knock over the vase or anything, but I'd just like to add that Adobe Photoshop is probably the best program for icons ;) And if you want screencaps and stuff, I know a dozen or so sites if you want them. Okay, I'm done sticking my nose in now :P

#412 Jul 08th, 7:21am
TwilightRose15

um yeah, i have photoshop but i dont really know how to use it and i dont even go near paint. im just not the artsy type so i think i'll stay away from it...

and i was just wondering, whats a steriotype you have for us? aussies? and i have another one to add to the american one; you solve all your problems with violence, everyone has a gun and everyone likes to shoot things

tiger

I GOT A DOCTOR WHO T-SHIRT!!!!!!!!!!!!! i just had to let that out, im so excited :D

Hmm... there aren't that many stereotypes for the Aussies. Not like there are for Americans, anyway. The ones we listed for Americans - some (not necessarily a majority, but not just a small minority) people actually believe them. With the Aussies, all the stereotypes are just jokes really. Things like everyone wears a hat with corks hanging off it, they regularly fight crocodiles for fun, drink nothing but beer, they always manage to find a way to work a reference to "the barbie" into every conversation. Can't think of any more off the top of my head, but all the stereotypes are along those lines, jokes that no one actually believes. In terms of what we really envision Aussie life to be like, as far as I know the general mental image is pretty much like England except with better weather, less chavs and with higher concentrations and a wider variety of insects.

Last relevent thing I can remember - I heard this one from a random guy doing stand up, so I don't actually know if it's true or not, or if I remembered it the right way around. "If you meet someone with an Aussie accent, and you can't quite decide if they're from Australia or New Zealand, assume they're Aussie. If you call an Aussie a Kiwi, they'll be insulted, but if you call a Kiwi an Aussie, they'll be complimented." My memory's terrible, maybe it's supposed to be "call a Kiwi an Aussie and they'll be insulted, call an Aussie a Kiwi and they'll be complimented". I don't think so, but meh, it was stand up, probably wasn't serious anyway.

vultures

Oh yeah, I'll second that photoshop is awesome. I've used it at college. Sadly is also very, very expensive =[

As for stereotypes... For the Aussies there are a few I can think of. Basically, you lot drink Fosters all day and spend your free time wrestling crocodiles. Also, all women are called 'Sheila'. As Stoko already said though, they're more like fond little jokes than real stereotypes.

I know quite a few American ones, mostly about fast food - as in, you all eat McDonalds all the time. Again, most of these are just jokes and not real stereotypes, but one that I hear all the time and a few people I know do actually believe is that Americans either don't know/don't care about anywhere other than their own country.

That brings up a question, actually, if any Americans here don't mind answering. How often would the average American family go to other countries? As a vacation, I mean. Is it common to stay in your own country for a vacation, go to abroad, or do you even go away at all very much? I would imagine that people from European countries would tend to go abroad more than American people, for the simple reason that there are more countries in close reach. I wonder if this is true?

You can just pirate Photoshop, you know... Adobe has enough money, it won't be missing out too much. I like it, but for drawing stuff from scratch (with a graphics tablet) rather than editing images I prefer Illustrator or ArtRage. Also, for the non-pirate Open Source fans among us, there's a program called GIMP that is essentially open source Photoshop with a slightly different interface. Tis good.

Anyway, that's enough geekery from me. See ya!

#416 Jul 09th, 4:56am
TwilightRose15

did you draw your thing yourself missed nin?

but why would it be that americans dont go away cause they dont have access to other places? im pretty sure alot of people go away here and we have absolutely no-where. actually thinking about it, people usually only ever make an over-seas trip once a year or not even that. i've only been over-seas twice but my mum goes every year. we get lots of tourists though :)

and yes, i think australians and british are much the same, as you said, we just have a hell of alot better weather, except when it gets into the 40s, its a tad hot then. but right now its the dead of winter and its barely cold, well im in melbourne so it sorta is but when i was in sydney last week it was not winter at all, it was so humid

#417 Jul 09th, 5:32am
Missed Nin

Yup :)

I think she meant that because America's bigger than Britain you have to travel for longer to get to another country, and there's more sight-seeing possible in your own country. I mean, I know people who go over to France for a weekend - you only have about an hour's journey time. You probably couldn't do that so easily in a bigger country.

Not faiiiiir, it's summer here and it's still bloody raining...

#418 Jul 09th, 5:38am
TwilightRose15

lol. thats so weird about just being able to go somewhere so quickly. it takes us 12 hours just to get to another city, sydney to melbourne usually takes us 2 days or sometimes we can do it in 1 if we get up early and dont stop much. but australias really big isnt it? compared to england i mean, not to america. i always thought of it as tiny because we're so far away from anyone else but i guess its not that small. but when i graduate, i would rather travel around australia than go overseas, i dont know why, id love to go to england though.

it rained today, it was so bloody anoying. i fell in the mud and got my new t-shirt dirty and then i had to wash the dog cause she got wet while we were down the park and then i was stuck inside but i wasnt allowed to go on the computer and now its really cold and i've only got a couple of blankets. I HATE THE RAIN AND THE COLD :(

So, you lot wait until I'm going to be gone for a week and then post three pages of things when the forum's never been that busy before?!?! Not to mention that all of the e-mails stopped my computer dead in its tracks literally. It was shutting down programs left and right and wouldn't do anything I wanted it to. Honestly!

I must now sulk sulkily...

Done. :))

No, I wasn't insulted. I didn't even see the post until today. At least you told me! The last Brit I asked was totally evaisive "I think you should look at global ideas of Americans". Pity about it is the fact that there are people who really do think that, and us not-so-fitting-that-description people get a bad name from it.

Thanks for the concern, though. No broken bones or problems or offence or trolley poisoning...rather boring week, actually.

At any rate, I'm back, dearies. Do behave yourselves whilst I go and figure out how to re-program my computer to accept bulk mail...

#422 Jul 10th, 11:45am
TwilightRose15

omg Crystal, you HAVE to update your Doctor Who story, its so good. please update it! and you too Lex, you promised

ok, so question. Why is it in Europe and Aussie its 'Mum' and in America its 'Mom', cause i suppose 'Mom' would be more understandable derived from 'Mother'. Is it 'Mum' just to make it sound better or something. Does anyone know?

And is it holidays or something in America and Europe now? Cause NO ONE is updating their stories and i hope they're just not being lazy

Tiger

#423 Jul 14th, 4:43am
lexophile42

Sorry, tiger, I've had a dead power supply for my writing computer and haven't been able to write anything. I've got several chapters but they're all trapped inside a dead 14 year old laptop... so I have a reason for not updating. I'll do what I can while I have my sister's power supply... so expect lots of updates in the next few days.

The reason for 'mum' and 'mom'? No idea... it's just the way it is... perhaps because 'mother' is actually pronounced 'muther' so 'mum' is derived from the pronunciation as opposed to 'mom' which would be based upon the spelling of the original word. I say 'mum' and I'm in the states... it just depends on what you read, who you talk to, and how you were raised to speak, I guess.

Also, in the states, it is summer vacation. That might be one reason for the lack of updates... course (speaking for myself) summer tends to be the pits when you're not actually on vacation somewhere and so most of the daytime (and nighttime) hours would be spent on the computer.

#424 Jul 14th, 10:10am
TwilightRose15

lol, yep thats what i do, although we dont have summer vacation. we just have holidays and cause of world youth day, i have really long ones this year! but its anoying cause we have to go stay with family for it and so, although im on hols, the rest of my cousins arent cause the holidays are at different times in different states, and i cant see my friends so i really do, spend all night and day on the computer :D

yeah, thats what i was sorta guessing at, and a steriotype for the states is that everyone says 'Mom' and i thought that was true cause thats what my cousins say. Ah, another steriotype fallen through.

Whats a power supply? you mean the cord that goes into the back of the computer to give it power? how can you have a dead one of those?

#425 Jul 14th, 6:48pm
lexophile42

The power supply for a laptop is a cord that leads to a box that is connected to a cord that connects with the wall. My power box thingy is dead... but I'm borrowing my sister's, so it's all good for the next week or so.

You see, the thing about stereotypes is that most of them really aren't true. Like all Irishmen are drunks... or all redheads are short tempered... or all blondes are dumb... or all Americans say 'Mom'... or even all British people have bad teeth.

#426 Jul 15th, 12:23am
TwilightRose15

oh, yeah i know most steriotypes arn't true, but i seriously thought everyone said 'mom'. i think everyone in australia does, we dont make fun of you, we just think thats how you say it. oh well

im lucky, me and my dad have the same computer so i can use his to fuel my computer and i have a spare but i dont know where it came from, i just found it

hey i was wondering; have you already had series 4 of doctor who in the US or is it playing now?

#427 Jul 15th, 12:28am
lexophile42

Last I saw... Dr. Who was on reruns of series 3... and 4 comes out on DVD next January... I think

Don't quote me on all of that, though... I'm not positive

#428 Jul 15th, 12:58am
TwilightRose15

so it hasnt aired? you havent seen series 4 yet? really? cause its airing now in australia, although we're only up to episode 3

#429 Jul 15th, 12:59am

I'm really not the one who'd know... but a friend of mine was complaining about BBCAM only airing reruns of season 3.

#430 Jul 15th, 1:05am

are you angry at me? cause im sorry if i did something to make you angry, im just curious. i wont bother you then if you dont want me to. i'll just stop talking now, maybe go to bed...

#431 Jul 15th, 1:09am
lexophile42

Angry? No! why would I be angry? I was more frustrated with BBCAM for not showing anything new. I don't get angry at people that often. It's not in my totally cool nature.

Sweet dreams, tiger!

#432 Jul 15th, 1:15am
TwilightRose15

nah, i decided against it. still to early to sleep i guess and i have better things to do, i just had to hide the computer from my dad

have you already seen series 4? cause thats what my friend did, she got it off the computer some how. she burned me a CD aswell :D, although i promised to watch it with my family i odnt know if my self control will be strong enough

is BBCAM the main channel for UK shows? we have the ABC, it has all those shows. i hate that the BBC wont give Doctor Who to anyone until its finished in the UK, its so selfish, cause then we get spoilers. i know like everything that happens and i cant read doctor who fanfiction or even go on youtube anymore. its sucks. i think we should make a petition

#433 Jul 15th, 1:26am
lexophile42

I haven't seen any of season four because I only have time for tv from about ten pm to three am... and there's nothing good on during that time period, so I watch what I have on DVD... which is seasons 1 through 3.

BBCAM is BBC America... which is all we have as our connection with the UK.

#434 Jul 15th, 1:33am
Stoko

That must be annoying, but we're not the only ones who do it. It's only very recently that we've not had to wait months and months for American programs, for example, and the only reason they've started to close that gap is because such a large percentage of people were downloading them as soon as they aired in the US. Which is exactly what you could do with Doctor Who, they're always online about 2 hours after they air =P

#435 Jul 15th, 1:45am
lexophile42

You gotta love the net!

#436 Jul 15th, 1:48am
TwilightRose15

i know, but i promised to watch it with my family. both my doctor who friends do that, although one of them just watches them on youtube which i would never dream of doing, the picture is too bad for such a magnificent show. i hate it even watching it on a small screen like my TV and try whenever i can to be at my grandparents house who have a plasma.

well im not really sure about american programs, cause i dont really watch much TV and Doctor WHo is the only thing i really follow that is still being made, but i think we have to wait for both and theres no australian tv worth watching. do you get neighbors and home and away?

#437 Jul 15th, 1:49am
Stoko

Yeah we have Neighbours and Home and Away, but I have no idea how far behind you we are or what channel they're on. BBC, I think.

You could still watch it with your family, when I say "downloading it" I mean a 350MB video file that's pretty much just as good as a DVD. So it'd look fine, on a TV. And the finale aired a couple of weeks ago, which means episode 3 that you just saw, you could've watched with your family 3 months ago.

#438 Jul 15th, 1:57am
TwilightRose15

lol, i know. but we dont have the adapter thingy that lets you watch it on the TV, we'd have to watch it on the computer. i have a CD with the first nine episodes so if i want to watch them, i can. but i sorta like how you have to wait a week for the next episode, it makes it so much more spectacular when you see it. i think we're looking into one of the adapters so next year (or whenever the next series is) we can download it and watch it on time, while still having to wait a week and getting the good picture

why waste your time with Home and Away or Neighbors. They're some of the worst shows i've ever seen. Pretty much, australian TV is crap. Did anyone ever see that movie 'Hey hey its Esther Bluberger'? That was australian, and that was terrible. But, most of my friends adore Neighbors or Home and Away, im just prejudiced cause i watch better shows than they, most of them being British. My two favourite shows, everyone at school thinks are terrible and, in one case, nerdy. if they actually sat down to watch it, they would see just how much better mine are :D yes im full of my doctor who and buffy coolness

#439 Jul 15th, 2:04am
lexophile42

Buffy, you say? rock on with that Buffy-coolness!

#440 Jul 22nd, 3:28pm
TwilightRose15

lol. YAY! buffy is awesome.

i caved. i watched my disk with series 4 on it and the episodes that ive seen so far are brilliant, i was starting to think series 4 was just going to die like the old doctor who cause the episodes i had seen previous were some of the worst ever. i just did it cause both my doctor who friends had seen it and they were talking about how spectacular the episodes with rose are and i just really, realy want to see them

when does the summer holidays end?

#441 Jul 22nd, 9:37pm
Hermione Vader

when does the summer holidays end?

In mid- to late-August and sometimes in early September, depending on when your school decides to resume classes. There's no set date and it varies from year to year. The summer season, however doesn't end until September 21st (and sometimes September 22nd), but school has usually been in session for nearly a month by then.

#442 Jul 25th, 10:54pm
TwilightRose15

crap. when does it start? we have four weeks, how come you get so long?

#443 Jul 25th, 11:02pm
Hermione Vader

crap. when does it start? we have four weeks, how come you get so long?

Summer vacation starts in late May or early June, depending on when your specific school lets out for the summer, so we get about three months of vacation (or holidays or whatever you want to call it). I don't know why we get three months.

#444 Jul 25th, 11:07pm
TwilightRose15

do you get other holidays during the year. cause we have a two week holiday in between each term so we have;

term 1 - two weeks - term 2 - two weeks - term 3 - two weeks - term 4 - six weeks (christmas) and then it starts again.

so if you add that up, it comes to 12 weeks, which is about 3 months!

#445 Jul 25th, 11:10pm
Hermione Vader

TwilightRose15, are you in Britain or Australia? I was just wondering because your Christmas break is way longer than ours in the U. S., which lasts about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks (2 weeks if we're very lucky), and a 6-week Christmas vacation would make a lot of sense in Austalia since it's summer during Christmas there (which is a completely foreign concept to me, since I'm used to very cold temperatures during Christmas).

That said, the only other breaks we get during the school year are a 2-day break during Thanksgiving, spring break (one week without school, during which a lot of high school and college students are known to go on vacation and do crazy things), and the occasional day off here and there.

#446 Jul 26th, 11:53am
TwilightRose15

lol, yeah im in australia. i've never seen snow before :D and last christmas it was like 40 degrees (celcius), you like couldnt go outside it was so hot, you would like die. and the coldest its ever been is like, 10 or something, except when i went to england, that was cold, and wet

that sucks, i think i would rather it our way, at least you get rest time all throughout the year and like, this break i had four weeks and i got SO bored, i just wanted to go back to school. to have like 3 months all at one time. but, i wont critize your ways, i guess it would be boring to have holidays when you had to stay inside all day and school when its sunny (not that it isnt usually here)

#447 Jul 26th, 5:43pm
TwilightRose15

I was talking to this girl in america and she said alot of schools start at like 7:45 and finish at like 4:30 and then you only get like half an hour for lunch. is that true or just her school? cause that seems really early and really late. like i start at 8:30 and finish at 3:30 and i think thats long hours.

ok, quick question; what search engine do people use? like google or some thing else...

Tiger

p.s. Kayee, i thought you photoshoped the two of them together in your pic, im such an idiot

My old school high school went from 7:20 (meaning you had to be there at about 7, meaning getting up at half past 5) and ended at 2:10. Our lunches were only 22 minutes. And we had block scheduling which meant we had two hour classes. I do not miss it.

#449 Aug 01st, 8:54am

My high school started at 8:00 and ended at 3:00. We had five minutes between classes.
