Topic: AUTHORS DELETING STORIES
If an author's story is deleted could they at least explain why their story was deleted?

A few stories that I liked in the Storm Hawks section disappeared and I went to the author's userpage to find all her/his stories had been deleted, but their was no explanation.

I think if an author deletes a story they should put an explanation saying 'I deleted this story' and perhaps include an explanation why exactly they deleted this story. Not receiving reviews* or thinking your story sucks (shock! horror! other people might not think they suck) is not a reason to delete said story.

I think if fanfiction.net deletes a story on an author then said author should say on their userpage that fanfiction.net deleted their story. (And FYI if fanfiction.net deleted a story on me then I'd just reload it again anyway)

I delete due to lack of reviews, or if I'm just tired of writing it. I delete a LOT.

As LazyChestnut said "I delete due to lack of reviews..." Agree.

I delete also because I don't like the direction of the plot.

HOpe that helps.

seems like a good reason - if it wasn't reviewed you can't really know if it worked - can you?

I deleted a few stories of mine, after realizing:

1. The grammar was awful.

2. The romance was horribly mushy and rushed.

3. The reviews were from people I was trying to avoid.

4. It was a blot on my very name.

5. I couldnt belive that I had written somthing so awful.

Pretty good reasons, I think.

I think that if someone deleted something, it was for a good reason. I feel guilty when people exclaim over why I've deleted something, but then it makes me sad because it was, in all actuality, a Mary-Sue.

I know what you mean about reviewers you're trying to avoid; it's no wonder I started out a Suethor with all the "zomg, this rox!!!!11! i luv (insert attractive male lead)."

I don't normally have the problem of being disappointed when an author deletes a story, which leads me to believe that only the crap stories are (or should be) deleted. Do you get what I'm trying to say? If I've ever seen a deleted story, I could understand why.

So I don't really like this topic, I suppose, because if someone kept around a story that they weren't all that proud of, they have a low integrity. *shrugs* Hey, I've done it too.

What's a crap story is subjective in a way. whoever liked it and no the reviewers aren't just feeding the author's ego they can't all be the author's friend. Maybe they liked the plot and idea. It's still the same to them and some people still feel bad when a story is deleted. Though people have their reasons for deleting a story, I got tired of mine and wanted to leave FF. I gave it to a friend & kept it on a site of mine.

So many times, I've had fics I loved like crazy disappear because the author decided to just delete everything. This freaking kills me- we liked your stuff! We wanted to read it and enjoy it, you coulda gave us some kinda warning! I now have a habit of frequently saving anything I like from authors I don't know, in case this happens again -_-

I understand the sentiment that you can be embarrassed by your stuff. I have stuff up that I'm slightly horrified by. But I know that there are people who do like them. For their sake, I leave things like the abysmal "Shadows" up. I've just changed the desc to warn new people to avoid it because I wrote it when I was 13 and it shows. Why do they like it? No idea. It's terrible. But if it's not costing me anything I'm not gonna delete it.

There was an author who I loved, but I stopped reading her work entirely because she deleted it halfway so often that there wasn't any point to starting them.

I know what you mean about a warning, but the only problem is that to overly-critical people, it can come off as annoying. I HATE it when authors post an author's note as a chapter and say, "Well, since I don't like this, I'm taking it down," or anything at all to that effect. Because even if it wasn't their intention, it sounds whiny. It just does. I would never do it because I think I would sound whiny, even if I wasn't trying to. And then people will say, "No, don't delete!" And so the author feels bad about deleting and keeps up a story that they don't want to keep up.

But, that might just be me...

Yeah. Lacking in the review dept can be very frustrating, but, I definitely don't think it's any reason to delete the whole story.

The First poster of the topic wasn't asking weather a lack of reviews is a right reaosn or not. He is just wanting Author's to put explanations down to why (insert story) was deleted whether it's by FF.NET staff or the Author.

I've only ever deleted one of my stories, and that was because it had next to no reviews and I had no idea where I was going with it.

There's plenty of stories on my account that I sorta want to delete, but some people actually LIKE them. I think I'm gonna post what I think of the stories I've written in my description... tell people which ones are actually worth reading.

Well, I agree with everyone else... if the author deletes their story, there's a reason they did it. I understand why readers can become angry, but the author has every right to delete their own story. Even those 'lame excuses' have reasons behind them. If no one reviews, then authors don't even know if anyone reads their story, so why bother keep it? And if they think their story is bad, there's obviously reasons as to why they think that way.

Authors don't really like deleting their hard work, if that's what you're getting at. But I understand where you're coming from, because some decent stories I've read were deleted by the author. Apparently, she lost motivation. Sure, I would have been happier if she had kept her story, but if she wants to get rid of her own story, it would be her own choice.

Really, if I had a choice, I would just keep all stories that are written unless they really suck. Wasting years (or perhap, a couple of minutes) of hard work doesn't seem worth it.

Giving it away could help, to someone who has the same writing style/idea.

I used to have five stories up here. Then it was eight, then it fell down to five again.

I've deleted four stories in the past (sometime early this year), for the following reasons:

1) Island Craze was a badly-written, boring, Mary Sue mushy madness; I can't believe I wrote that! At that time I was getting back into fanfic writing but it was horrible! I felt like a total idiot and got a flame before I could delete it. Too bad I couldn't change my name... :( I'll always be remembered for writing such crap!

2) Love's A Game was good, but due to all the het-phobia and OC-bashing in the fandom (and on this site), I knew it would've been targeted by future flamers. I don't care about the number of reviews, but damn! People hate my OCs but I'm trying to stay strong (in fact, none of them were MS). Some of the CCs were falling slightly OOC, so I took it down to give it a re-edit. I also have a Beta for this ficcie, so it won't be back up for a long while. I hope this makes them happy!

3) An Interview With Iago was fun to do, but got no reviews.

4) The Diaries of Two Wives was also good, but it's fate was the same as number 3.

So there you have it. It was a choice I made and I didn't wanna have them displayed up there, or else I'd lose!

I've only deleted on story and it was because when I read it on here, it sucked, bad.

I deleted two of my stories, one is now back up again and the other is in the process of being rewritten because I hit a huge flaw in the plot and I needed to rewrite the whole thing to fix it.

There are a few of my stories that I am not very proud of, but I'll just leave them anyway... Someone might like them at least. :)

I have a story or two that I simply wish I'd written better and am embarrassed that I ever wrote. I'm nervous when I think that someone who might read one of my better fics might go to my profile, assume that none of my stuff is crap, and then read one of the stories I wrote a while ago and lose any of the respect they might have for me. Just thinking about it... D:

But I leave them up anyway, because oddly enough every once in a while someone comes across one and leaves a glowing review. Though I always wonder, what the hell did they see in that thing? I also force myself to keep away from the delete button simply because any sucky story I've written in the past just marks how far I've come since then. I can understand why other people delete stories, though. God knows I've been tempted, and I have before...

Hm, good point. I deleted one of my (two) stories because:

A. It was horrible. Right now, I don't feel that I have the skill to do my idea justice, so I'm going to wait until I do.

B. Almost no one was reading it. Four or five chapters and almost no hits beyond the first chapter.

C. I couldn't figure out how to implement the next part with what I had written (because of the WAY it was written).

But I didn't think to explain WHY I deleted it. *goes to change that*

To be honest, it's a bit selfish to be demanding that the author provide a reason why they discontinued a story or deleted it from their account. One of my favourite authors began having personal problems in her real life and it was affecting her writing style. As a result, the story took a drastically dark and depressing turn of events and the story became a struggle to read. After three chapters of that and a flood of negative reviews, the author wrote a note explaining her situation and shortly afterwards, the story vanished.

Another author I used to follow deleted all her stories because she claimed to have "found Jesus" and all her stories were considered satanic, so she was "cleansing" her soul. My brother suspected it was her mother who did it by somehow getting access to her account and deleting the stories. Either way, it was highly... unusual...

Oh my goodness, what were her stories about that made them so 'satanic?' This is also why...I don't follow a religion...there are no rules to how far you can go.

#23 Jul 14th, 11:26pm
Drowned Hopes

Some people seem to be under the impression that anything other than their religion is satanic. Intolerant bastards...

Which reminds me: I've been called a devil-worshiping atheist before.

Damn, I keep getting off-topic today...

Funny thing about that Bible-thumper author, her stories were DBZ fics. Gohan/Videl romance stories too! Pretty harmless stuff, right? I find that it's the ones who spent most of their life "ignorant of God" and then in their early adulthood, they suddenly "find Jesus", they're more fanatical than regular Christians. And fanatical Christians will find just about ANYTHING to be satanic and unholy, such as imported cartoons. :S
