What is with the ban on MA (Adult, 18+, etc) stories? All that would be needed is you have to be logged in, or behind an Age gate to view those stores. I know a few guys that post on Adult Fan Fiction .net that would LOVE to post here (this is a much better site, with the email alerts, subscriptions, etc) that can't because their stories go beyond the M rating.
Because really, no one is able to check every single computer and make sure that you are, in fact, 18. I could say I'm 18 on the Net right now, and because no one is seeing me IRL (I hope), they would never know. Apparently it is better to have the authors slip under the fence and not the readers.
True, but 98% of the people out there lie about their age anyways (which could be one reason why there is no MA section) but if the site has warnings and an age gate they are covered. If the person lies, its not the sites fault Adult Fan Fiction.net has a simple age gate that covers them from any liability if a minor is caught by someone on there, but the site itself (layout, naviagation, no extra features) leaves a lot to be desired which is why some of the authors would like to post on here

I've been around this site long enough to remember when they had the NC-17 rating. When the admin(s) did away with that rating, the excuse given was that the complaints on those sorts of stories accounted for more than 90 percent of all the reported fics--in so many works, it was more work to sort out than it was worth. I'd put money on the fact that many of those fics reported were only due to petty BS like someone having their shipper sensibilities offended or revenge reporting. I agree that the set-up at AFF is horrible. There's no page jump, and no category filter (Yes, it's a smut site, but...). People are better off posting their stories on LJ than that place.
sh!t, double post.
I believe that they are trying to filter as best as they can or at least show people that they are trying. I think I saw that somewhere, there were complaints so the NC17 rating was canceled... Very futile in my opinion since people still post smut in the M category anyway. Livejournal is actually a pretty good source for fics if you know where to look.

Wait, there is a "M" rating on FF.net. I've read plenty of stories on this site in the past week with graphic sex scenes in them. But they aren't shown by default. You have to select "Fiction Rating: All" or "Rating M" to have those stories shown. But I do agree that AFF has a HORRIBLE interface. For one thing, there's no way to tell if a story is actually FINISHED unless the author puts it in the summary that it is finished. I don't like reading stories that aren't finished because over half of the stories on this site are abandoned stories. I wish there was a filter to where you could exclude stories that haven't been updated in say...12 months. If someone hasn't updated a story by then, chances are it never will be.

Sorry, didn't see that. I prefer to read the M rated ones because the more closely resemble real life most of the time. And what is the difference between "M" and "MA"? Don't they both stand for "Mature"?
M Rating - Not suitable for children or teens below the age of 16 with possible strong but non-explicit adult themes, references to violence, and strong coarse language. MA Rating - Content is only suitable for mature adults. May contain explicit language and adult themes. M seems to be about the same as your average PG-13 movie, while MA is the R/NC-17 area with graphic descriptions of sex, etc.... Its seems stupid to me, the internet of all places shouldn't be censored.
Ah, thanks for clearing that up.

Its seems stupid to me, the internet of all places shouldn't be censored. Meh. Like anything that's privately owned, FF.net has the right to ban anything they wish (I don't miss songfics, for example, but I hate the ban on the principle that supposedly this will bring a rise in qualty on the site. O_o ). And of course, everyone has the right to find another archive to post their banned works at. However, not many do because even the next-biggest fanfic archive has only a fraction of the readership this place does. And I think it's a damn shame that there isn't another similar site to AFF, because the organization hasn't improved one lick since I found the place five years ago. And that is beyond sad.

True, they have the right to ban it. Though I'm not to sure on the "rise in quality" because of the ban. Half the stuff I read on AFF is of the best quality. I'm not saying that the fics on this site are not of high quality but because of this stupid ban on Adult theme'd stories they are missing out on a lot of great fics and writers. It takes about 10 minutes to put in an age gate and that would solve all their problems. If people lie to get past it, well, its not the sites problem. Their asses are covered.

That's because there are morons who have song lyrics longer than the story, if we wanted to read the silly lyrics we could have looked them up. I'm glad for that ban, I just wish they validated fics before allowing people to post that would improve the site. Yeah, it's sad that we have to search livejournal for good NC17 rated fics and such. But ah well.

I'm glad for that ban, I just wish they validated fics before allowing people to post that would improve the site. I agree that the majority of songfic and chatfic was little more than glorified spamming (particular, the latter). But I've seen a few people pull off the song fic concept, and do it well, and I'd hate for them to get their good fic deleted on a technicality. Which is why I'd be all for a validation of fics. Even the simple validation of basic grammar would do wonders for this place. Yeah, it's sad that we have to search livejournal for good NC17 rated fics and such. But ah well. LJ seems to have a far better selection of fics period. Maybe it has to do with posting them onto their own private journal that the majority of folks who post there take a lot of care into writing--as opposed to somewhere such as this, where it's so big that one feels like they can d*ck around because so is everyone else. At least, that was my rationale six years ago. LOL. Regarding NC-17 and organization at AFF--you'd think there's be at least a kink filter. Not everyone wants to shift through tons of boring vanilla sex stuff before finding something a little more extreme. Likewise, not everyone wants to read about scat or BDSM.

FFN authors just post crap for the hell of it. Regarding NC-17 and organization at AFF--you'd think there's be at least a kink filter. There's just a lot of tacky sh*t on that site-some not even making sense. And half of the stories leave me nauseous.

Well, there are the warnings. If the story is correctly labelled, you can go by sorting through them using the warning labels. You are not forced to read them, though... I don't, like I said in previous posts, I either search livejournal or simply read M rated stories. Thanks for being an a.s.s.hole.

Well, there are the warnings. If the story is correctly labelled, you can go by sorting through them using the warning labels. True, and I probably wouldn't be too bothered with that if I could skip to a specific page. Instead you can skip from the previous or next page or the end or beginning of the section. Works okay for smaller fandom. Not so much in Harry Potter. Why should I have to shift through fifty summaries because the site navigation sucks?
