That is the thing I did not get in this whole story. Why did she not grow suspicious? Why did she not ask questions? There had to be grabage coming out of that cellar. The kids in the cellar needed diapers, and those had to go somewhere after being used. And the wife of the house never wondered why there are fresh diapers in the garbage can when nobody else in the house has a baby? Never wondered why there is more garbage than she and the other inhabitants produce? Never, ever ask a single thing?

Not to mention that ever since 1984, she has never entered the basement. That's a little weird. I mean, you'd think she would go at least once in 24 years.

Also, they raised kids in this house. Not only in the basement, upstairs. Kids go everywhere. they explore. They are hard to keep out of any places. So... never looked what was going on down there? Never went into the cellar, either? They had tenants in that house, although those were forbidden to use the cellars. Still, nobody ever slipped up? No "I wanted to hang my laundry to dry" or "Where can I store this stuff"?
