I don't know if anyone's said this, but the document manager and even forum post reply now have these really helpful things such as spell check and formatting and etc. So yeah, that's it. I thought I mentioned it in the new thread I created, but it was merged into another thread on a similar topic and was lost - so it's worth mentioning again! 1. I encourage anyone who is using Firefox, to install their regional english's dictionary and to turn on the inline spell check. 2. I encourage anyone who isn't using Firefox to install Firefox and go back to point 1. 3. I encourage anyone who refuses to see the sense in points 1 and 2, to utilise FF.net's new spell check and preview features BEFORE pressing submit in the forums, and on their stories if they're not using a word processor to write, spellcheck and edit for grammar already (which you should anyway).
I'm not disagreeing with you on the spell-check issue, but my biggest problem is the words spell-check misses. For example: using "your" when you meant to use "you're", or "too" when you wanted "to". Plus the occasional random one where you used "late" instead of "hate". All are legitimate words, but not the ones you intended to use. Therefore, I find it quite handy to be able to go back and correct those mistakes when I spot them days or weeks later in my posted stories.

Haha, thanks so much ! It was so nice of you, I had been wondering for the past half hour how to do it and you told me everything.. THANKS SO MUCH !!! :)

Thank you for the guide! I appreciate it very much. I can finally download/upload my stories. Have a great day! And again, thank you! -harvestingNarutos

Hello, I'm new here. I registered a few days ago, but I've got some trouble uploading documents in my documents section. When I try to upload one through the document manager, It gives me the following message. "Empty Document doc You have uploaded an empty document or there was an error in processing." I've uploaded one on another computer, from work. I can't understand what's going on. I'm using Vista, and I tried both with Maxthon and IE, and it still won't work. Can someone help me, please?

I'm using Vista, and I tried both with Maxthon and IE, and it still won't work. There's so many things it could be. Let's start with: What kind of document format are you trying to upload? If FF.net's server doesn't recognise the file it might spit out that error. Make sure your document is as devoid of Word styles as possible. Use only the paragraph style (no headings etc), and only use italics, bold and underline as text styles.

THanks a lot... Problem solved with that explanation about the styles. seeya

Hi I'm not sure where i should have asked this but here seems the best place. Here is my simple Question......I'm Using Open Office to Write my very first FanFic but ive never really used open office so how do i use it to upload my story?
You won't need to use OpenOffice to upload your story - the document uploader is on the site, and I know that it accepts OpenOffice format. Just make sure you save the document somewhere on your computer that's easy to find.

Hey, this website doesn't have a subsecton for my Author... At all... What do I do now? =_=;;;;

Gabriel Schwrbrg: Hey, this website doesn't have a subsection for my Author... At all... What do I do now? =_=;;;; Depending on what media your fandom is you could try either: http://www.fanfiction.net/book/Misc_Books/ http://www.fanfiction.net/anime/Misc_Anime_Manga/ or any of the other similar "misc" sections they exist in most sub categories or even the mother misc section has misc cross overs: http://www.fanfiction.net/misc/ Or if you have a story ready sometimes emailing the FF.net admin team can get the category added, but don't hold your breath. ;)
Extremely useful! Apologies for not reading through the stickies admin/mods. (Mod edit: please don't double post, if you want to add a second (or third!) thought to a thread you can press the "mod" button on your post and edit it.) Alright I hate to double post but I have an issue with redoing my summary. I clicked edit and it said it made the changes and yet when I go to my story it is still the atrocious one I had before. Is this like what I have been reading about in the last two pages where it can take several hourse to work? Also I apologize if this question has already been answered. I did read through so I just must have missed it. Also this could just be me but I have twice now had to click preview in this section before I could type.
As for the preview I don't know, but to answer your other question: Yes, that's what you've been reading about. Sometimes the site is quite slow with updating such things as summaries, edited chapters etc. I once had to wait about five hours until my new story appeared on the list. By then I already had reviews from those that have me on author alert, because the emails are sent right away. So just have patience, although I'm the first to admit it's hard sometimes.

Hello, my name is Roselina. I have a bit of trouble. When I finish editing chapters, they don't change after. How come?
Sometimes changes can take a good couple of hours to show up, but if you have done it right they will eventually appear. :)
When I finish editing chapters, they don't change after. This may sound silly, but you did remember to replace the chapter with the edited document, didn't you? (see first post on how to do that). Making changes in a document in the document editor does not mean a change has been made in the posted story. For that to happen you need to upload (use the replace function) the document as a chapter of the story.

hi ive uploaded stories a long time time ago but forsome reason i cant upload my new one. It keeps coming up with Empty Document. Its a mircosoft word document. Can anyone help??? Make sure that you don't have any styles applied to paragraphs other than "default". Depending on which version of Word you're using, select everything (ctrl+a), bring up the style manager (in the tools menu usually), find default in the list and apply it. Check your formatting and save that file. See if it will upload now.

yes that worked perfectly. Thank you so much!!

Thanks for the step-by-step instructions. I'm running into a problem, however. I'm submitting my first fanfic, and I've gotten as far seeing it listed in the Document Manager. However, when I click on Stories, it says there are no stories listed under my account, so I can't go any further. My fanfic is in MS-Word docx format. I tried submitting it separately in both story and docX format according to the options in the Document Manager. Both uploaded fine to the Document Manager, but still, when I click on Stories, it says there are no stories in my account. I tried going into Edit/Preview, and that works fine. Any suggestions?

Are you missing the step inbetween the document manager and published stories? It goes like this: 1. Upload a document 2. Proof read and edit the document in the document manager. 3. Publish the edited document to a chapter in your story (Or start a new story). 4. Now you should have something in stories to look at.
Thanks for the quick response. I think I am having trouble with number 3 on your list: publishing the story. I did go through the proof-reading/editing/saving process in Document Manager, but then after that I thought I was supposed to click on "Stories" in order to publish it. Am I supposed to be clicking on something else? I just figured out what I was doing wrong - I was clicking on "Stories" on the left side, instead of New Story at the top. Thanks!

could someone tell me how this works. I read the rules but still don't understand. I did up loade a few of my stories but it says they will only be up for 60 days. I want to move my stories from one fanfiction site to this one, mine are chips fanfiction. thanks dorisann

Hi I'm new to this site and have created a story. I already have one chapter but when I add a new one I only get the first chapter as the second one. I have read how to add a new chapter but i cant seem to be able to do it.
That sounds most like you are adding the wrong document to the story. Or does the new document show up as the first chapter. The solution to the first problem is easy: select the right document when you want to add a chapter. That's why it's important to give the uploaded documents a good name: so you can distinguish them from one another. ----- Your stories will stay on the site for longer. It is the documents that are deleted after sixty days. Note that uploading documents is not the same as posting a story.

I've been having a problem with submitting my stories... Every time I upload chapters to the site on one of my stories, it's always centered. Whenever I fix it and press 'save', it goes back to being centered. What do I do??

I've been having a problem with submitting my stories... Every time I upload chapters to the site on one of my stories, it's always centered. Whenever I fix it and press 'save', it goes back to being centered. What do I do?? Press the HTML button on the far right of the tool bar and (don't panic!) edit the source code by hand. There must be a center tag or many in there messing things up that the editor is missing. If you're not familiar with HTML, all you should have is tags for paragraphs (it's a p inside a greater than and a less than symbol to start and to end the paragraph a forward slash and a p inside another set). Delete any set with 'center' in them. You may also want a 'hr' tag or three to separate sections - it draws a horizontal rule. It's probably best in the future to have next to no formatting and no styles except default paragraphs in your document before uploading.
Thank you for replying to my post, but I don't know where the HTML button is. If you could point me in the right direction, I would be exceptionally greatful.
The html button is the button that is furthest to the right and says "html". Press that and a window will pop-up (obviously you've got to allow pop-ups) with all the text in html format. It works the same as pressing the html button when typing up a forum post.

I got a different error. It says: FanFiction.Net Error An error has occurred while processing your request. Please email this error message to via . All errors are logged for administrative and security purposes.91: /secure/docs_tab_docs.php

Was that when you were uploading a document? Ff.net does that sometimes, a way to get around it is to export an existing chapter and then edit that document. It gets a document into your document manager without you having to actually upload one. See the first post on further details on how to do this.

hey, i'm having troubles when i try to upload a new chapter to a story. i didn't have this problem before, now it gives me this messege: (Empty Document doc You have uploaded an empty document or there was an error in processing.) i even asked some other person to upload it for me but they got the same thing, my file is a Microsoft Word one as i always use, but i never got this problem before. is it for today only and then it would be back to normal or is there something else wrong? my word file isn't empty or anything before you ask. =s

how do i make a new category? i was looking for Winter Passing under movies so that i could post a story about that and I couldn't find an option to do that. also, i was trying to get support help that's at the upper right hand corner and it told me that my mail was not configured correctly or something. it's kinda frustrating that it's not intuitive.

Hi. Sorry if this isn't the right way to post my own question,if I'm wrong please forgive me. (Bows deeply). My ? is about editing. I want to keep my story name and basic plot, but I'm not happy with the way I wrote how the characters acted and sounded. Plus I realized there should be more detail about the world around them. So I can just edit the chapters or do I have to start from the beginning and delete the story(I only have 2 chapters)? I have been having trouble uploading new chapters also but I saw some really good advice here so I'll really study up on that. I'd really appreciate any help/advice you can give me. Thank you, Faerieschyld

So I can just edit the chapters or do I have to start from the beginning and delete the story(I only have 2 chapters)? I have been having trouble uploading new chapters also but I saw some really good advice here so I'll really study up on that. You can approach this one of two ways. 1. If your edits are minor you can suffer through the online editor (which is awkward) and edit them in your documents. 2. Or if you would rather rewrite the chapters in your word processor and upload the to your documents you can replace chapters. Things that you may find handy to help with this... In your login screen, if you click on "stories" on the left, then click on the "edit" button to the right of the story you are interested in changing, then click on "Content/Chapters" at the top. *takes breath* You should see a list of your published chapters. From here you can: "exp" (export) a published chapter back to your documents (if for example you've deleted it from there or if the document has expired) where you can edit it online. "edit" and "del" (delete) let you shuffle your chapters' ordering and delete entire chapters completely. And most usefully, under "Replace Chapter" there's options for replacing a published chapter with a document in your documents. So once you've uploaded the new chapter and/or edited it in your documents you can choose it to be published in place of the chapter you've grown to hate. Hope that helps.
You could simply rewrite the chapters on your computer, adding and removing stuff adn so, and then you can upload the chapter and then replace the content of your chapters, there is a button for that on the site where your story chapters are. I dont know if thats the answer you want do Im afarid thats all I can do to help you. Ma.anda
To Monotonehell & Ma.anda thank you both for your advice it really helps, I really appreciate it. Now all I have to do is reset my thinking cap & kick my son off the pc once in awhile:). Thanks again, Faerieschyld
Are you sure your not replacing it? otherwise I cant really see a reason for you r computer to do as it does.
I have a question, when it says you uploaded all 15 documents, can you delete some and your stories are still there?
Yep, your stories will still be there even when you delete documents in your document manager. Once you've uploaded a story onto the site (it's published and everyone can see it and review) then it'll stay there until you go to 'Stories' and delete from there. Documents in your document manager are sort of like back-ups, except they expire after a certain period of time.
Okay, thank you Rhea. =) I was itching to know lol. -scratch-
