Topic: Rec: The Writers Anonymous C2 Rec Thread
The purpose of the Writers Anonymous C2 is for anyone to recommend fanfics from any fandom and genre to the readers of this forum and beyond by writing a review to the fanfic itself, and by posting a link to the fanfic and (if possible) to the reviews of the fanfic. The review should also be included here using the template below.

Please note that the stories recommended should not be your own - self-plugs have their own existing topic.

If you wish to discuss any of the recs or reviews, please do so in the Writers Anonymous C2 discussion thread here: http://www.fanfiction.net/topic/2872/2592365/1/

FAQ:

1. Why write a review?

First, to recognise the author's work. All too often, good fiction goes unrecognised, unrewarded and worst of all, unread. Second, to publicise the author's work to this forum and the wider community. Third, because recommendations rarely state why the fiction has been recommended.

The rewards are that the writer gets a decent review for all hir hard work, the reviewer gets noticed for being a decent reader and reviewer, and everyone can see why a fic has been recommended. And, by thinking about the review, and what made the fic good, to encourage writers and reviewers to think about their own writing.

2. What fanfics are allowed in the C2?

Anything that you've enjoyed reading, from any fandom, any genre, any style (poetry, one shots, epics), but the fanfic must be complete.

However, the C2 cannot contain recommended stories that are against the guidelines of FF.net. This includes, but is not limited to: non-stories: lists, bloopers, polls, previews, challenges, author notes, etc.

3. What makes a good and/or proper and/or structured review?

This very much depends on the reviewer. The review should explain why the fic has been recommended, and why the reviewer particularly enjoyed the work (narrative, setting, pace, style, use of language/humour), etc.

The review could be quite personal in nature, or it could even take the form of a book review. The general aim is to give the author something more than "nice chapter. more please", and to give the C2 community a reason why they might want to read the fic.

4. So how do I recommend a fic?

Having found a fic that you really like, first write a review of the work, and submit it to the story. Then, reply to this post, copy and paste the template, and fill in the blanks. Don't forget to also paste in your review so that everyone can see why you've recommended the fic.

5. What does familiarity mean?

In order to make a rec and the fandom as widely approachable as possible, it should be rated according to how much knowledge of the fandom you think a reader should have to best appreciate the fic. Rate it none if you think anybody could read it, to expert if only those who can quote from the fandom backward would understand it.

6. What happens next?

Someone on the C2 staff will review your recommendation before adding the fic to the C2. This is only to ensure that the fic has been reviewed, and that the fic does not breach FF.net's guidelines.

Edit: Added optional "warnings:" to the template (thanks to Big Sister Kitty for the idea). Added guidelines for content that cannot go into the C2.

Er, anyone can recommend here, right? I'll guess I'll go first then.

title: To Err is Human

author name: Mustang-bex1126

fandom: Torchwood

rating: M (for violence and language; I'd give it a T for sexual situations)

familiarity: afficianado (story makes more sense if you have seen the episodes 1.10, 1.11 and 1.13)

the review:

I very much enjoyed this story. It has a well-written, well-thought out plot. It's an original plot with lots of twists and turns. It's an exciting plot. There are excellent characterizations. The only thing I didn't really like was the aftermath.

Instead, I'll rave some more about the plot. It takes an event from the Show and explores a 'what if'. What if Owen met Dianne's offspring? Though I personally don't care about the whole Dianne affair (quite frankly, at the time I thought the episode was overfull and Dianne should have been left out), this story has increased my appreciation for it and the way Owen behaved because of it. His self-destructive nature leads to a great climax.

Edit: Thanks, IndeMaat. Fic added to the C2 - WS

title: Hunter´s Legacy

author name: Dragonbreath1

fandom:Sonic the Hedgehog

rating:T

familiarity: curious (It´s an AU fic - the only thing you have to know is how the character´s look^^)

the review:

The flow of the story and the intertwining of the impossibly many paths is brilliant. The characterization is spot-on, the gags are refreshing and he employs the running sort like a master, the descriptions are very lively and detailed. Slightly reminiscent in style of the Discworld novels at times, this story is a must-read!

Edit: The fic does not appear to be complete; the author has marked other fics as such, so this fic can't be included yet. PM me or re-edit this if I'm wrong. WS

Here are a few contributions from the Anime/Manga and Video Games fandom.^^ These were chosen specifically for the readership of members who are not familiar with the fandoms. These stories may or may not make you like my fandoms, but it's worth a shot, right?^^

Pardon the reviews, though. Most of these were submitted long before the C2 even existed, so don't count on them as much. They're just proof that I've reviewed.XD

title: Prince & Prejudice

author name: Iruka-chan2

fandom: Prince of Tennis

rating: K+

familiarity: aficionado

warnings: Also a lengthy story. And one can hardly find elements of canon in this fic since it is set in the future, but I believe people can read this without a problem. Another thing though, despite the rating, this story would be more appealing to the patient, sophisticated types (after all, this is a sort of crossover between PoT and Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice).

the review:

I admit it, this has got to be the best “xOC” romance I’ve ever read (even if I’ve only read a few prior to this). I have read the abridged version of Austen’s novel, and it’s been a while since I’ve read it, but I can confidently say that you’ve written a wonderful fanfic that is suitably parallel to Pride and Prejudice, at the same time remaining in canon. X3 Yes, Kuni-chan does look and act like a noble prince.♥

And it is so well-written! In my opinion, this story has no clearly defined style of writing, but it’s so sophisticated and precise and simple that, in a way, it becomes a style in itself. Or I’m just being dense at not finding the thing that separates your style of writing from the norm. Yes, I find nothing grand, nor incredibly witty, nor flowery, nor particularly unique with your style of writing, but that in itself becomes a sort of appeal to me. (I’m sorry, I’m just being confusing, aren’t I?)

Being a high-school student, I find the college scene to be less than appealing, much less expect a sophisticated and serious world to become the setting of a fanfic. (And as such, am utterly clueless at answering your riddles.^^; At least they rhyme nicely.) The only place where I’ve seen the details worked appropriately, as if that lifestyle has been lived out by the author, was in the Gundam SEED section, where I’ve found good detailed fanfics about the military and such. Well, I trust you wrote it accurately, since the setting is rather vivid.

And to have Tezuka interact with OC’s instead of the canon characters, and still keep him in-character, with a non-Sue love interest, well, you’re just plain INCREDIBLE! Never have I seen a somewhat OC-centric plot become effective in fandom! And Atobe as the president? I didn’t see that one coming. (By the way, Atobe x Carlinda sounds interesting.)

And then we come to the ending, the ultimate test of a good story. Your ending is clean, pleasantly surprising, and in a way, amusing. That is to say, it was not the best, over-the-top, plot-twistingly brilliant ending ever, but then I liked your story for its simplicity, classiness, and attention to detail.

Well now, since the story’s good, the background’s good, the careful and precise use of citations is good, the utilization of believable, non-Sue, perfect character-molding OC’s is good, the ending’s good, then I would say that this was a marvelous story. It’s concise, thoughtful, and elegant, just like Tezuka.

title: Fingerprints on Glass

author name: Luc Court

fandom: Naruto

rating: K+

familiarity: aficionado

warnings: Might be a tad confusing because of references to the series, but I think the audience can pick it up.

the review:

Allow me the privilege of stating my utmost admiration for your work.^^ Such fine detail, and great use of biology and anatomy! Once again you have caught my attention with another gripping piece, and you know, after sifting through pages of worthless stories with Kabuto in the character filters, I really feel that it is all worth it, if only I could read such wonderful stories that were hidden among them.

I know it’s fanfiction, but you’ve made Kabuto sound so…_canon_, if you know what I mean. Yes, and I enjoyed the parts where you’ve employed concrete metaphors to explain the particular situation Kabuto finds himself in. Now _that_ was brilliant. Kakashi, the troublesome glass, and careless Kabuto, who (luckily) rubbed off his ‘fingerprint’ before anything could happen. Oh, it’s simply riveting!

Do write more.^^

title: 20 Facts About Yakushi Kabuto

author name: Lupin

fandom: Naruto

rating: K+

familiarity: aficionado

warnings: Also a bit confusing because of the references to the series, but the readers can get to know this (dreamy) character better.:3

the review:

What can I say? I’m speechless with delight at reading this, being a bona-fide Kabuto fangirl and all. X3 Well, I’m not sure if all that is true, but then again, I’d like to think of Kabuto as having a sort of conscience, however minimal that may be. I know that he is named after the aconite, I’m not sure whether he likes it or not, but for him being a Medic nin, sheltering layers of cleverness, precision, and method, I suppose he might have. I was really amused at the thing about his handwriting. XD But the haunting tone of item number 20 does wrap it all up, for one who has taken Kabuto’s nature into study, that his complexity of character might have gotten the best of him.

Well, I hope you enjoy reading them! I'll be back once I finish reviewing some other good stories.^^

EDIT: The first two have been added to the C2. The third one hasn't, because I'm not sure it can actually be considered fanfiction. Perhaps that is one for the discussion thread. AbCarter

Title: Gilded Monomaniac

(link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1956533/1/Gilded_Monomaniac)

Author: Vindaloo

Fandom: Dexter's Laboratory

Rating: K (I would've put K+ because of the slash, but whatever.)

familiarity: afictionado

Warnings: Slash, I guess, very long one-shot

The review: A completely immersive, amazing one-shot about Mandark sneaking into Dexter's lab. Very in-character observations with a lot of amazing descriptive detail. Great vocab words, too, but that's probably a stupid thing to say... her vocabulary is extensive, and it adds to the experience. Not to mention one of the funniest A/Ns I've ever seen in my life.

My review, at the time, was a little less detailed:

"Okay. One word... brilliant. I actually felt Dexter's confusion, Mandark's vindictiveness... everything. Keep up the good work... I want to see more."

Edit: Thanks for the rec. PM'd the author as discussed, added my own review, and added the fic to the C2. Conversational posts deleted. WS.
