Yes. If we had a challenge on crack/weird pairings the sort of enormity of the pairings would be lost on anyone not familiar with the fandom, and if we had a challenge, the challenge would be to write that pairing well - like that disturbing Snape/Giant Squid fic I found a while ago, and you'd only know if the pairing was written well if you knew the fandom, and not everyone knows every fandom...

Sorry about the Game debacle. Should have taken that into account: not everybody would have understood the Saladin/Gibreel pairing from possible The Satanic Verses fan fiction, for example.

Yeah...That would be the downside from it. Seriously, I'd seen some pairings that I don't even know what fandom they were from or ask myself, who's this or that character. I don't even know if it was crack.

Yep. Actually, if anyone would like to challenge anyone else to write a story on crack pairings in their fandom here, that's fine with me - it just wouldn't be an 'official' WA challenge (i.e. the winner wouldn't get their story on the C2) because limiting it to a fandom would limit the participants. But I'm sure you guys would have fun with it anyway, and anything that gets you to write is good, isn't it? (And btw - the category would then be 'Game' ;p)

Having finally poked my head out of the X-Men: The Movie category for a minute, I've discovered that people have serious problems. What is it about grown men and underage girls that everyone feels the need to put them together every chance they get? For example:

Firefly: River/anyone that isn't Simon. I understand that she's alone and in the midst of puberty and all that rot, but that doesn't mean she's gonna look at Jayne/Mal/Wash/Book and decide she needs to a piece of that. ESPECIALLY Jayne, since he tried to turn her into the Alliance for the bounty in the first place. And I can't see Jayne willingly going off with someone who can kill him without breaking a sweat.

Heroes: Peter/Claire. BESIDES being the classic older man/teenage girl pairing, HE'S HER UNCLE! So we get a little incest tossed in there for flavor, hm? ::SHUDDER::

No kidding. That's just icky. The thing is, I couldn't see River with anyone. She was too lost in her own mind to be looking for romance. At least, it always seemed that way to me.

It's bad enough that she's only 16 or so on the show and Peter has to be in his 20's,but once it came out that she was his niece, it was just too gross to even contemplate. Guys go to prison for those kinds of relationships!

Yep, I know this one! You copy/paste the part you want to quote, enter your response to the quote, then go back and highlight (select) the quoted part and select "quote" from the pull-down box. ;)

Also, I can't agree with you more about River's state of mind. I'm sure the last thing on her fractured mind is "becoming a woman". And that's without even getting into the moral implications of the whole thing.

I think what it mostly is, is that an awful lot of fanfiction is written by underage girls. But the characters they fantasise about aren't underage boys (scrawny, pimply and sweaty) they're men who are physically mature. So they're writing standard self-insert fantasies. Generally ones in which, while the male character is allegedly adult, he's written pretty much with the character of a teenage girl.

At least, it's been my experience that the adult fanfic authors I know largely don't write pairings which the ages involved would make illegal. And if they do, it's because they're writing a story where the issues are specifically explored, not one where a normal grown man actually considers a romantic relationship with a child.

Or it's for comedic effect... I've seen statutory pairings done solely to show that the girl in love is a nutjob, and the guy hates her. There's a rather popular Family Guy pairing like that, but I'm not remembering what two people were involved. I want to say one was Meg.

Yes, they did, but this pairing was something different... I almost want to say Meg/Quagmire, but I'm getting the feeling that isn't right.

Samus x Ridley (Metroid)

Probably the most loathed pairing in the Metroid fandom, mainly because its so highly improbable. Reason? Ridley killed Samus's MOM. K-I-L-L-E-D. Plus, there's just something about a hot human female getting steamy with a space dragon thing that's just so...wrong.

Samus x Rundas (Metroid)

I'm not against this one; I just think it's really strange. Girl on alien action! It's like Mass Effect all over again, only the lucky human getting screwed is a woman! Yee-haw! Oh, and did I mention that Rundas can summon up ice? That could be really kinky in bed. :o

Yup, it is. I just read a Samus x Rundas fanfiction that was hardcore erotica. I'm serious. The guy spared no expense and left little to the imagination. A little short though, almost like a drabble. :P

That pairing DOES sound horrible. It's sort of like what I was saying about Sheena and Zelos. Sheena doesn't want to have to do anything with Zelos at all, much less talk to him (although when they DO talk, it's hilarious).

That would be wrong on so many levels. For starters Mia is dead, and secondly Phoenix would technically be slashed with Maya.

I personally have written a crossover between Waldo (of Where's Waldo fame) and Carmen Sandiego (of Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego). I think it may be the weirdest pairing I've heard of.

I may have said this before but I saw a fic that scared me for life with the Invader Zim pairing of Dib and Professor Membrane @_@ I wish I never read it at all. and pairings like Dib and GIR are messed up too.

This might acutally happen. Solidus and Vamp were in the Harrier together, and Vamp IS bisexual.

But it would still be creepy, as Solidus looks like an old man and Vamp looks, well, young. :P

But I just realized - Ren/basically anyone from Shaman King. ?! There are so many screwed up Shaman King pairings; basically anything with Ren is a crapshoot because Ren HATES PEOPLE. I mean, Ren/Horohoro has a justification of those two risked their lives for each other, etc., but Ren/Yoh? Ren/Anna? REN/PILIKA?! What the hell?!

Skimming through this thread for amusement, I think the Orthanc/Barad-dûr pairing wins for originality and oddness.

The weirdest crack I've ever seen was Gir/Invader Zim. Except I didn't read it, because I was afraid to.

Biblical slash, in general, puzzles me, mostly because I can't imagine having enough to go on as far as characterization to make it fun. But I suppose there's the "this is so terribly wrong!" factor which gives some people a buzz and explains a lot of crack.

I tend to lurk in FFX, where I've seen an infamous Auron/Marlboro crackfic magnificently written and perfectly executed for the sake of making our brains implode. There is also a badly-written Moogle/Lulu scene that I wish I could excise from my skull, along with an awful lot of Auron/Rikku fic. The latter is not that bizarre, at least in the context of fandom-kink which so often seems bound and determined to play with taboos, I just find it bizarre that it's the most popular pairing in the fandom. If you don't know FFX, imagine stopping by the Potterverse to discover that Hermione/Snape is by far the most popular pairing, and all other pairings are scorned as deviations from the OTP.
