Okay. First off, this one was incredibly hard to judge. I was swinging between 3 great stories and it was so hard to pick! Seriously, this was very very close. I was tempted to pick 3 winners because it was that hard! Anyway, I finally picked one: Congratulations to hooloovoo-too, winner of the Branching Out writing challenge! The Branching Out challenge can be found here: http://www.fanfiction.net/topic/2872/4866948/1/ And below is what our judge, Rhea Silverkeys had to say: The winner is 'On in the Passing World' (fandom: Grave of the Fireflies) by hooloovoo-too. Everything was written really well. I liked the style and how you started off each part with a description of the hillside, and then the sentence with the character dying on which day of the week and how long it's been since then. Very nicely done! Honourable mention must go to 'Softly into the Dark Night' (fandom: There Will Be Blood) by Satine89. I baulked at the 10 000 words but got through it hardly noticing the word count. Brilliant story, a bit disturbing but very good. Another mention goes to 'La Fille En Rouge' (fandom: Noir) by Winter Skye. The piece is made up entirely of questions but isn't boring at all, the questions do not sound tiresome or repetitive, and he manages to tell the story and describe things well. Another very good piece, I was really impressed. The winning piece can be found here: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4209747/1/On_in_the_Passing_World - - - - - - - - - - CHALLENGE: Write a story that: Is themed on a colour. That's it. No more, and no less. But there's a limitation. If a colour has already been taken, you can't use it. So post in this thread if you want to join indicating which colour you'll use as your theme. No one else can then use the same colour. Also, blue is blue. Sky blue, sapphire and royal blue are all...yes, blue. Scarlet, maroon and vermilion are all red. Purple, red and pink are different colours. White, black and grey are colours. You get the picture ^_^ List of colours already taken (as of the 10th of May): - Blue - Yellow - White - Brown - Red - Grey - Silver - Green - Pink - Gold - Black - Indigo - Violet RULES: 1. The story may be any genre, rating or fandom you choose; with a minimum length of 1000 words and maximum length of one chapter (there is no maximum word count, but make it a reasonable length). The story may have a multi-chaptered sequel, but the first chapter must fulfil all the challenge requirements and be able to stand alone as a complete story (meaning you don't need to read chapters 2 onwards). 2. The story must be uploaded to the site by JUNE 30TH, 2008. 3. The words "Writers Anonymous Colour Challenge" or, in short, "WA Colour Challenge" must be in the summary. 4. Reply to this post with a link to your entry when you have completed the challenge. JUDGING: I or one of the mods (mods, if you're interested in judging, PM me to let me know!) will judge the stories. We'll be looking at the quality of the writing and how creatively/well used the colour theme was. PRIZES: S'not much, but the winner of the challenge will be featured on the Writers Anonymous Challenge Winners C2. A sort of consolation prize for all participants is that by posting your story link in this thread, you get coverage for it on the forum for almost two months, as this topic is pinned. Link to C2: http://www.fanfiction.net/community/Writers_Anonymous_Challenge_Winners/51198/ - - - - - - - - - - Do you have a suggestion for future challenges? PM Rhea Silverkeys with your idea!

Ahem, point of order from the floor. If we are to post a link to our completed story once we're finished it, and if there's a limit of one story per colour, are we able to reserve a colour now before starting? Also, lesser problem, if we're only allowed strict colours and not shades etc, there's only seven strict colours (plus white and black), what if there's more than nine entrants? *the trouble maker exits before Rhea slaps him* ;)
Monotonehill, I believe this answer's your first question: Quoting Rhea - "If a colour has already been taken, you can't use it. So post in this thread if you want to join indicating which colour you'll use as your theme. No one else can then use the same colour." Let's see, there's blue, green, yellow, pink, red, purple, grey, brown, orange, white, black....that's 11, me thinks! And I'd love to claim blue while I'm here!*grins*
You know, I read Rhea's post three times and completely missed that *head desk*. All is well, proceed. ;) I stake out yellow as my personal playground in that case.
*claps* I'll take white.
Can I pick gold? I'm pretty sure that's a color... Or are we counting it as yellow? In that case I'd change it to another color.
Brown, my favorite color! Please?
I'd like red please. :)
Oh!....and I wanted to add that Violet is also a separate colour which makes that 12 colours. I knew I'd forgotten a colour...came to me a long while later...:D
Seriously, are we considering gold a seperate color? Because if we aren't I need to know before you all pick the rest of the colors before I can change my pick.
Then...I will claim gray!
Sorry Oracle, Rhea's been a bit busy. But yes, gold and silver are colours. I didn't really think that we'd run out of colours, didn't cross my mind how many people would join, lol. How many entrants did we get for the last challenge?
Well, I thought I counted something around ten people including myself...that didn't include any people who might have tried the challenge and didn't post a story for it in time, naturally. Although now I wonder if I really want gold to be my color...sorry, I'm indecisive. ~_~()
Going for silver quick...
May i use green? Oh and btw i am in love w/ your icon 3
I'm still with brown, but for other people without colors... indigo is separate from blue and purple, methinks.
May I claim Pink? Edit: also, were do we post the story?
Just post the story on your account in fanfiction.net. Then if it wins, we can add it to the Winners C2. Indigo is listed as a different colour on Wikipedia, so...I guess it is. We're running out of colours now, aren't we?
Indigo: ? aren't purple indigo and violet shade of the same colour? Roy G. Biv goes: Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet. So purple's just a version of violet if anything. That makes the total colors....Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet, White, Black, Gold, Silver, Brown, Pink... What IS cyan, anyway? Gold: Oracle Five is uncertain! Oi!! Alright, alright, I definitely pick gold! I'm no long officially uncertain! :P
I always thought violet and purple were the same colour, just different shades. And yes, what *is* cyan?
Cyan is that awful colour that's been used in PC colour pallets since EGA graphics. It's green + blue. RGB: #00ffff On the light spectra it goes Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet, no purple, but in pigments purple is equal parts red and blue. Colour is a funny topic.
Yeah, it's like a very light, almost neon blue-green. Go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyan
Okay, so the TOTAL colors we have to work with are: Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet Purple Brown Pink Black White Gray Silver Gold Cyan...did I miss any?
Well, starting from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primary_color and working forward: Primary colours: (additive) red, green, blue; (subtractive) magenta, cyan, yellow. Unique secondary colours: (i.e. not also primary) orange, violet. Tertiary colours from the (primary) CMY colour wheel: cyan, blue, magenta, red, yellow, green, azure, violet, rose, orange, chartreuse, aquamarine. Tertiary colours from the RYB painting system (excluding the hyphenated colours): red, orange, yellow, green, amber, blue, violet. Other colours mentioned in the text include brown, grey, white, and black. This gives a unique list of: amber, aquamarine, azure, black, blue, brown, chartreuse, cyan, green, grey, magenta, orange, red, rose, violet, white, yellow. But this list is just as subjective as any that could be created. Where, for example, is mauve, historically a very important colour? Silver and gold aren't pure colours (they can't be defined by a wavelength), more an effect of light. Bikers and photoshoppers might want to see chrome added to the list, another light effect.
This is starting to get confusing...should I change my color after all?
Hmm, Gold and Silver are no real colours? What about bronze? But anyway I'd like to claim black.
I'll claim indigo, please.
Act now stock is low, operators are standing by! Call in the next five minutes and you can receive an identical color, to keep for yourself or give as a Mother's Day gift! Call now! Only four minutes left! Only four minutes left!
I'll take violet if I may.
Cyan looks like light blue to me =\ Colour is a funny topic. Confession: I was running out of ideas and time when I created the challenge. April passed far too quickly for my liking. Otherwise I'd have thought about just how limited colours are. *shrug* Oh well, I guess this shows how many people we've got visiting the forum (which is great and unbelievable at the same time)! The next challenge won't be quite so limiting, I'll think it over properly. (Plus I'll be on holiday, lots of time for me to think ;P)
I want to experiment with a beta for this challenge. Anybody wanna beta? If so, click here.
Hooloovoo, a superintelligent shade of the color blue in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams. Hey, it's my name! I'll stick with indigo, though.

Hi, I'm fairly new to the FFN forum. I'd like to enter with the colour Teal if that is okay if that is okay. Teal is a mix of green and blue but it's neither green nor blue. In case you don't know it. If that's not possible I could come up with some other colours not listed or just take purple. Whatever you like though I have a really cute idea for the colour teal.
Errm, i already have pink, but may i also have Cyan? or can i only have 1 color/ story?

Das wolf Errm, i already have pink, but may i also have Cyan? or can i only have 1 color/ story? Oh no! We have a competition. Kidishcaresh: teal is basically a slightly darker shade of cyan so I guess we'll just rename cyan as teal and you can have that one. Das Wolf: you got in too late! kidishcaresh just requested teal before you and I think you need to stick to one colour (don't be greedy ;) ) (also please don't double post, if you have something to add to your last comment press the mod button and edit your post.)
Those fictional colours sound good =) And yes, only one colour per person, as it's only one entry per person for the challenges. Suggestion of renaming cyan as teal also sounds good =)
Last chance to be my beta for this challenge! If no one answers by midnight tomorrow EST, then I am posting it anyway tomorrow afternoon. Please refer to my Beta: thread to read what I need.
I am sorry, but I have to ask…Are we permitted to have a beta? I am asking because I could use one but…isn’t the way we write one of the things that will be taken into account?
I can think of no reason why you can't make use of a beta to improve your writing. Unless they act as an ostensible ghost writer, it's still your work.
Thanks. So I just post the link to the story here right?
Yup yup - upload and publish it in your account and then link to it directly from here. :)
I've a question: I have a 'story' already open for this particular fandom I want to write about for this competition. The 'story', though, contains a series of unconnected one shots and/or drabbles. So...I was wondering if I might put this one shot up as part of that? It will stand alone and be complete in itself.

From what you've said it sounds okay. As long as your entry is in its own story on FF.N and is chapter 1 of that story. And as you say stand alone and complete within itself.
...So, in other words, you can't just add the one-shot to your one-shot collection, is that it?
According to Rhea's four rules above yes! But there's nothing stopping you posting your story in two places on your profile if you want. Just as long as here you point to a stand alone chapter 1 version.
But there's nothing stopping you posting your story in two places on your profile if you want. I'm afraid there is. From the posting guidelines: Actions not allowed: Multiple entries of the same material. There can only be one copy of any unique story on the entire site. No exceptions I too was hoping to add my entry to a series of oneshots I have collated into one 'story'. I guess I can replace chapter one with the text of this story, and make the original chapter one a different chapter with an A/N explaining to readers what's going on. Does that make sense?
I read that as a whole story repeated, if you have a story made up of many chapters in one story-slot and an extract of that story in another story-slot I don't think they'd have a problem there. Especially since that guideline is dealing with people spamming the exact same story loads of times with malicious intent. It could technically be a breach of the FF.N guidelines, but with the poop that they currently let slide, would they care or notice? O.O
I think WE should care, if nothing else. Besides, story repeats are one of the few things the site Admin jumps on pretty quickly. No sense getting someone in trouble over something avoidable.

I think WE should care, if nothing else. Besides, story repeats are one of the few things the site Admin jumps on pretty quickly. No sense getting someone in trouble over something avoidable. Not that I've seen - but fair enough, it's against the FF.N guidelines so don't do it. I guess a solution would be to end your current story at chapter whatever you're up to, start a new story entitled the same and note that it's a continuation of the last story, then add the new chapters onto that?
Almost up to posting "Brown"! Just have to adjust it to what my wonderful beta hooloovoo suggested and I'm good to go!
