![]() Crap. I just can't enjoy reading a good story any more. I reckon they're going to lose a lot of readers now, I hope I can get used to it, but it's just too distracting :S 6/07/2012 #61 |
![]() (edit. Apparently FA doesn't quote the original post of the person you're replying to. This is for Love Everlasting) THANK you for speaking my words. Actually, there are two AdBlockers you can use. If you are using Google Chrome (which you should be), there are two types of AdBlock available that I use. AdBlock and Adblock Plus (beta). Regular AdBlock seems to work when blocking the images. Once you download AdBlock, go to a Fanfiction listing, like this: http://www.fanfiction.net/cartoon/Transformers_Beast_Wars/ Right click on the picture. Hover over AdBlock on the drop down menu, and click 'Block this ad'. A small script will pop up with the coding for the Blocked element. The slider does not need to be moved. On the page I'm blocking the images on (the Transformers page I linked you to), the Blocked element will be IMG class="cimage" src="http://b.fanfiction.net/imageu/2319836/40" (Fanfiction has removed the actual thing from my message here) . Click 'Looks Good', and then another box will come up. The boxes that should be checked are "Type will be IMG" and "class will be cimage". Do not click the last box, or only that image will be blocked. Click 'Block it', and you now have no images! If images are still showing up, you should refresh your page. If your question has already been answered, oops, I haven't read the second page yet then. 6/07/2012 . Edited 6/07/2012 #62 |
![]() Hi Ridergal, Has anyone told you yet you should categorize the thread? Just hit the cogwheel on your first post to add a proper category (see Welcome thread for proper categories.) 6/07/2012 #63 |
![]() Thank you, Rendianami! The distracting and cluttered looking images are now banished for me. The layout, specifically the location of the text, is truly destroying the reading experience and the eyes ability to focus. Sign me up as one who has nice big slabs of nothingness on either side of the centred text. While I'm really hoping this is a temporary change, the history of ff.net doesn't favour us. I'd be happy to flick off an email about it to those in charge, but I'm not sure where to send it (as I've never had to contact them before). 6/07/2012 #64 |
![]() I just went to read a story, and the white borders have been turned to a darkish grey if you use black background for the stories. It is at least an improvement from the white. Must have happened recently, since it was not like that yesterday. 6/07/2012 #65 |
![]() The site looks horrid on my display, it used to fill my screen and now all the content is squished into the center, which when you have a large display looks bad and is a general pain in the ** to read from, the only way to make it fill the monitor is to hold control and use the scroll wheel, which has the adverse effect of making everything large and ugly, I hope this is temporary, if not, fire the moron who thought this was a good idea. 6/07/2012 #66 |
![]() I'm lucky, I agree it is a horrible change, but I only open the page about half way on my screen, so that I can read multiple pages at once, and see my bookmarks constantly in the corner. So I dont have that problem 6/07/2012 . Edited 6/07/2012 #67 |
![]() Yup, the new layout stinks. In short order, those empty panels will be filled with advertising. Which is exactly why FFN are preparing to cut out stories with lemons and or excess violence. You cannot put even a sensible URL within the place. Say, if you had created an audible reading of the story for blind listeners, that's not allowed. We used to have a name for people like that. brendan 6/07/2012 #68 |
![]() I too hate the new layout. The Icons/Avaters catch your eyes and makes it hard to stay focused on trying to read story summaries. And the blank spots on the sizes are awful. I want my full page back. I've been reading at the mobile site because I hate the new layout. 6/07/2012 #69 |
![]() It looks like someone is listening to someone, they changed the code again last night. Looks much better on my laptop. desktop not so much. if(w 1000) { if(t) t.width('auto'); return 'auto'; } if(w 1400) { if(t) t.width('1250px'); return '1250px'; } if(w 1300) { if(t) t.width('1150px'); return '1150px'; } //for 1200/1300 laptops else if(w 1200) { if(t) t.width('1100px'); return '1100px'; = if(t) t.width('975px'); return '975px'; so it wider today but they are still forcing a wider than normal margin on my screen. my screen width is 1900 so I still have around half 1/3 wasted. mailing support again. 6/08/2012 #70 |
![]() I can click All until the cows come home and it doesn't change to alphabetical to me....which is really really annoying. 6/08/2012 #71 |
![]() Blegh just reset the blasted format to the way it used to be. they dont need to dink around with new formats unless they're testing specific changes for specific (new) features. and if that's the case, put a blasted message on the front page stating "from x time till x time, we will be periodically changing formatting scripts for x reason. We apologize for any inconvenience." as well as make a separate thing for "beta testers" to accept the new formatting while logged in and to give feedback on what's good, what's invasive, what's annoying and what looks plain nasty. 6/08/2012 #72 |
![]() Is it just me or does it look like like the site just got a major blow up? I mean, now everything along the top looks bigger. 6/08/2012 #73 |
![]() yeah it seems a bit wider. not as good as before the first recent change but it's getting better. maybe someone's listening after all lol. 6/08/2012 #74 |
![]() Inside the accounts, it's changed again. Now everything is larger and there's a button up top for the mobile site, possibly to offer an alternative for people who don't like this layout. I really miss the simplicity of the old layout when it came to reading stories (free from images, however pretty, are distracting) and even in the accounts. :( Good to hear that the site's a bit wider though although the white spaces are still there in all their atrocious glare on the eyes, so at least that's an improvement. 6/08/2012 #75 |
![]() I think the bigger text is an improvement. 6/08/2012 #76 |
![]() Hey, guys. If anyone wants to/is interested in using superscripts, here's a really good one: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/135379 But anyway, does anyone have a superscript thingie for fonts? Lol. I'm really picky about when it comes to this stuff, and I don't do well with change. I really hate the bigger font. I miss the Verdana font size 9 :( 6/08/2012 #77 |
![]() What ever is superscripts? 6/08/2012 #78 |
![]() Superscript is a typographical term. What SmellyThePirate is referring to are user scripts. Using either a browser plugin (Firefox) or the built in extension tools (Chrome), you can install small bits of code written in javascript that affect webpages' appearance after they load. The code Smelly linked basically removes the white space on FF dot net, making it look exactly as it did before. I've written a couple myself and use far more (up to 5 just for youtube!). It's far more productive than hoping the overlords change their mind about leaving open prime ad space at any rate. 6/09/2012 #79 |
![]() Sorry about that! But thanks for correcting me! I really had no idea what it was lol, but yeah, thanks for the correction. Would you happen to know how to make one for the site text? because I really, really hate the bigger font. Or if you know where to find one of the "user scripts" to make the text/font Verdana, size 9 again. I can't stand it the way it is now! :( Thanks! 6/10/2012 #80 |
![]() I've had to use a combo of rewriting the link to the stylesheet to step back a revision, adblock to remove the new images and a html rewriter to sort out the embedded font sizes and div borders; story lists were too small to even read ( what sort of resolution was the change aimed at? ), the extra borders on the lists were distractingly high contrast and if you zoomed the text size with the browser controls to make the list readable, the story font was gigantic. Thankfully it now looks like it used to again, bar some slight formatting issues with list pages. Embedded stylesheets for things like font size? the whole point of css in the first place was to make reformatting easy for different display applications... in eleven years of using this site I don't think I've seen anything remotely as disruptive as the changes of the last week. Did I miss a change of ownership? 6/10/2012 #81 |
![]() On my laptop it really isn't that different from what it used to be. Desktop: F*** YOU! Crazy interface designer... 6/10/2012 #82 |
![]() What is with the new layout? I'm reading something and the next chapter is all different. I got a question, what is with the search box at the top of the page when it is already there? Where did the return to top button go at the bottom of the pages? 6/10/2012 #83 |
![]() I think somebody needs to test specific resolutions and other settings because I keep mine at 1280x1024 and then I often zoom in on pages such as this and doing so is not making me have to scroll side to side. 6/10/2012 #84 |
![]() We keep repeating that layout is horrible. I find this funny for some reason, seeing as to how there are 80-some posts saying the exact same thing. I hated it at first... and then I got over it. I'll be happy if they switch it back, but until then my screen will forever be zoomed in on my stories. I used to have the screen zoomed in anyway (my eyes like the big letters). I tried switching to mobile... but I couldn't deal with the font type. I like my Georgia-like font on the reg. site. 6/10/2012 #85 |
![]() The problem is we shouldn't have to zoom in to view the fanfictions on this website. I'm forced to change my display as well, when originally, the old layout did fine. Now I see comments of too many people having the same issue--when you have the majority saying 'no', you should reevaluate your revisions. 6/10/2012 #86 |
![]() True, Rendianami. I do see that it has changed since this topic was started, on my screen it's almost bearable without zooming. But then, I still use the big letters and I'm on a 15" 1280 x 800 screen, so.... 6/10/2012 #87 |
![]() At CreativeWriterInSpace: I'm on a 1366 x 768 monitor at the moment, but I plan on upgrading to a 22" monitor in about a week, and I just know this will look awful. I wonder what caused them to force a width align. 6/10/2012 #88 |
![]() I think we all do... hopefully it's just a temporary switch while they're putting other things into place. If not, I don't know what I'll do. I've already been drifting from fanfiction (in general) and this switch (as well as the M rated purge) may make me drift away more. 6/10/2012 #89 |
![]() Oh dear, I've completely forgotten about that M-rated purging. Unless the Moderators actually read the story and find the content that contains sexual/violent depictions, then they shouldn't be allowed to remove it. It's quite sad, really. Couldn't they just merge AFF and FF.net altogether? Sure, they can just be left alone as separate entities, but it would make this place a lot easier to manage; and I wouldn't have to look at horrible font (I'm talking about AFF here. I don't like their font/layout, but it's still easy enough for me to read without overly complaining, like I'm doing here). 6/10/2012 #90 |
