Topic: The Sound of Music...what you like

Al wanted a thread to discuss music. Here it is!

Yay! Epi's now one of my many heroes. What shall we discuss? Hmm... I shall begin. What's your absolute favourite, Epi?
#2 May 08th, 5:41pm

My favorite song or band or album or genre?

#3 May 08th, 5:45pm
AltearazCreator
Uh, let's go genre for starters, methinks.

Epilachna

I am open to most of alternative rock - basically the stuff they don't play on corporate radio. My favorite lyricist/vocalist/artist of all time is Maynard James Keenan. My idea of a perfect afterlife would be going to see Maynard in concert whenever I wanted for all eternity. He could be solo, with Tool, with A Perfect Circle - doesn't matter.

AltearazCreator
Hmm, I don't know the man's name, but the name Tool is familiar to me. I listen to a lot of the older rock, like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, the Beatles, and I listen to most types of metal, not death metal though. My favourite artist is the original Black Sabbath, mainly just because I love Ozzy's voice. I don't listen to the mainstream stuff either. I'm with you on that one. I don't like the stereotype that metal is evil or Satanist or whatever. One song, it isn't my favourite - I don't really have a favourite song, is Dreamer by Ozzy in his solo career. There's a music video for it on youtube if I remember. Very beautiful song.
#6 May 08th, 5:55pm
Epilachna

I know the song. Ozzy is a nut but he WAS Black Sabbath. I've actually gone back to listening to the classic rock station because at least it plays music that's stood the test of time.

Tool is technically 'progressive metal' from what I understand. Genres are so fluid and bands can change album by album. These are some of their most popular videos/songs from the last 20 years.

I'm going to try those links tomorrow. I've got to see if I can get youtube working on my good computer. You know of Ronnie James Dio? Oh man, but that guy's got a voice on him. Either with Rainbow, with Sabbath or in his own band, he's seriously awesome.
#8 May 08th, 6:17pm
Epilachna

They are very freaky videos, especially the older ones - Prison Sex was banned from MTV when it was first released (actually the song was banned from radio - in some places they'd only play it after midnight). Now, of course, it's played all the time - the edited version of course.

I know the guy. His voice doesn't look like him, though. Know what I mean?

#9 May 08th, 6:21pm
AltearazCreator
Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. My mom always says he looks like some little troll. He's so short! I also like this band called Iced Earth. They're pretty heavy, but I absolutely love this one album they did called Horror Show. All the songs are about horror movie characters.
#10 May 08th, 6:32pm
Epilachna

I'm not familiar with them but your mention of horror movies reminded me of a favorite cover...

Have you ever heard the marilyn manson cover of 'This is Halloween' from the movie A Nightmare Before Christmas. It's great. My husband sent it to me the other day.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jU6iP0WLsU8

Manson is/was one of my not-so-secret favorites. He hit his peak awhile back, but his three albums (Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals and Holy Wood: In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) are actually very unique and interesting - if you can get past him, that is. His earlier and later work is 'eh'.

It's odd, but I've never listened to him. I'm going to look into it, now that you mention it. One of my favourite bands is Iron Maiden. One of the biggest metal bands ever. I must get going now, but we could continue this conversation tomorrow. 'Night Epi.

My tastes run towards Rammstein, E Nomine, T.a.T.u, Metallica, and Linkin Park. LP's gotten such a bad rep...the music's GOOD and it's not ALL screaming! Of course, I like the screaming songs... ^_^

Actually, I also like the times that Rammstein combos with T.a.T.u. (ignore that it's a Naruto vid, please):

Rammstein

My husband really likes them. Actually, my friend Eric in high school used to sing their stuff all the time (he spoke German) and would translate all the lyrics for us. He also translated one of the funniest Tool songs ever - 'Die Eier Von Satan'. It sounds like the evilest song ever written (because it's in German and sounds like a Hitler march). The lyrics of the song are actually just a recipe for cookies called 'Satan's Balls'.

Metallica

I do love me some Metallica... I haven't been thrilled with their stuff since Load though. I LOVE the S&M CD. F'ing amazing orchestral sound that works with Metallica cuz they have that larger than life sound anyway. I wasn't a huge fan of the song 'Memory Remains' until I heard the S&M version and I was just blown away.

Linkin Park

I feel kind of bad for Linkin Park. They have become the poster child of pop rock that's way too overplayed. I don't hate them and some of their singles are good. I really liked 'Crawling' - the first 5700 times I heard it - after that, I just wanted to smash the radio.

EDIT:

it's not ALL screaming

What's wrong with screaming?

Oh. It just occurred to me that there is one band over the last ten years that I really love ... in fact, they have the distinction of being the only band that I can listen to without skipping a sucky song. All their songs on every album are great : Queens of the Stone Age.

'Mosquito Song' always makes me laugh (no surprise there ;)

We all will feed the worms and trees, so don't be shy!

I saw them in concert a couple years back when they opened for Nine Inch Nails. They were just as good live as on the albums.

I may be the only one here who likes that blippy synthesizer music from the 80's - when music was about the individual, not some corporate thing. Tears for Fears, OMD, Yazoo, Eurythmics - that's my kind of music!

I also liked the punk-based stuff like The Cure, The Smiths, The Damned - their version of Eloise rocks!!

#17 May 09th, 10:48am
Epilachna

Never fear Wendy - you are not alone! The Cure and Depeche Mode are two of my 80's favorites. Actually, I'm really upset because my Songs of Faith and Devotion CD is damaged so it won't import to MP3 right. Stupid. I actually had the singles album awhile back and played it for an entire year before someone stole it. It had the live version of Everything Counts - a fave.

During an OCD period I listened to Burn (Cure from The Crow soundtrack) over and over again for a week or so.

I will also admit to being a closet Annie Lennox fan and have been known to do impressions in the shower.

No more I love yous ... the language is leaving me in silence!

I also think that Manson did a lot for the Eurythmics song Sweet Dreams. Annie's beautiful voice makes you gloss over the disturbing nature of the lyrics, but Manson, well, he just gives you the disturbingness..

I also like Dire Straits. Is that wrong? O.o

That might be pushing it... although Sultans of Swing and Money for Nothing are definite classics. You're a British Isles gal though so I guess it's OK :)

Heh! The diplomacy skills are in evidence ;) So, what about U2? I like their early stuff best, up to Rattle and Hum.

#21 May 09th, 11:52am

I like October/War/Joshua Tree the best but honestly, I don't think they've ever made a bad album. I just liked them when they were more political.

Does anyone else like the B-52s? They recently released their first new music in...about seventeen years, I think.

#23 May 09th, 12:21pm
WendWriter

Same here. They are still political, but their songs are not reflecting that.

Okay, are we in agreement: when a band is young and hungry, they are at their best. When the corporate machine takes over, they start to lose their edge, until the corporate machine eventually strangles them. Debate!!

Hey folks. I'm back. Anybody like a band called Saxon? Some good old rock n' roll right there.
#26 May 09th, 12:47pm
Epilachna

B-52s are great. I love their guest appearance on REM's Out of Time.

I don't think you have a debate, darling, most of the acts/ bands I love were great when they started out and then slowly declined ... except Tool.

One of my great sadnesses is Nine Inch Nails. Ryan and I love Trent Reznor but he hasn't made a GREAT album since The Fragile in 99. His newer albums aren't bad and I do like some of the singles (Capital G, for instance) but they just aren't anything new. Pretty Hate Machine, Broken, The Downward Spiral and The Fragile were his great years.

I think the problem comes from multiple directions. 1) If an artist is owned by a company they want them to put out the same stuff that was a success. 2) If an artist tries to be different, fans complain that they don't sound like they used to sound. 3) Sometimes there is nothing left for a singer to say or a group of musicians to come up with together - they've just run their course.

I am just amazed that Maynard (with Tool or A Perfect Circle) has yet to put out a crappy album in 2 decades. Every album he releases is him - but different. He's only gotten better, more musical and more poetic with age. I'm sure he'll hit a roadblock at some point but hopefully not for awhile.

There's actually an 'all Tool' collector's issue of the magazine Revolver out this week. I need to go pick it up.

Saxon's an older British band. Well, they were. They're not around anymore. Corporate control of music is pretty brutal. Ya gotta hand it to them, they're among the best at ruining stuff.

It's like a buddy of mine always says. Pop music can't sell on its own merits, so it needs some half-naked woman to be promoting it, or 'singing' as they like to call it, though it seems quite far from singing to me.

Alanis Morissette sure bucked that trend, didn't she? Canadian, if memory serves.

Wendy, I haven't missed your question on consistant bands - I'm just trying to think of any. I'm having a problem with time scale. What is consistant? Some bands only last a few years. Those are the ones you remember as great because they split before they had time to suck.

I'll say 311 is one of the most consistently awesome bands over the last 20 years. I don't even know how to classify them musically - rap, reggae, rock? I can listen to any album at any time for any length of time and just rock out. Ryan went to see them during Spring Break in New Orleans for their '311 Day' concert. They played for over 4 hours straight. Ryan says it was the best concert he'd ever been to. I saw them twice in Jersey and I put them at a close second to Tool's Lateralus tour.

Alanis Morrisette... Yeah, we don't like to talk about her. Nobody I know ever liked her music. Same with Celine Dion. I was rather hoping the Americans would keep her in Vegas. She's really got little talent as a songwriter, and her 'beautiful voice' sounds very much like shrieking to me.

ROFLMAO!! And very, very true.

Mind you, Cake had only one good song, The Distance. I listened to their album at the record shop and... bleugh!! Was not impressed. If the rest of their songs had been posted here, I would have flamed them!!

It's a bit sad when you see musicians who are, to put it kindly, past their sell-by date trying to get down with the kids. A bit of dignity, please! Am thinking of Burt Bacharach, Frank Sinatra, Leonard Cohen...

You snarky git, Al! ;D

ROFL!!

Okay, so Alanis sounds like a strangled cat, but back when she was hot, I was into her because my life sucked and she made sense to me. As for Celine... too highly strung, and too fond of showing off her skinny bod. Am sick of it. Am I the only one who gets naffed off with women who claim to be respectable but wander about half naked wiggling their butts to sell their okay music? Give Alanis her due - I was impressed by her grunge look and refusal to to play to the stereotype of the pop princess. She sold her stuff on the cat-screech sound and snark alone.

It's kind of sad because Alanis is from this country, and I don't think she was ever popular at all here. She was very made fun of on TV. I saw a satire once where she was on a news panel and every time they'd go to talk to her, she'd rotate between clothes and no clothes. It was blurred out for TV of course. The girl who played her was funny. She'd shriek and wail until the other people in the panel made her stop.

Ditto, but the early stuff, the socially responsible stuff by Grand Master and Melle Mel is top notch, and was into Soul 2 Soul for a while. I still think it's rap for the thinking person.

U2 get the same kind of reception back home. We make fun of Bono's oversized ego all the time. It's considered to be the cool thing to do. It's even cooler to hide your CD collection when you do it! ;)
