What is your favourite Ramones song?

My favorite would have to be: Do You Remember Rock 'N' Roll Radio?

Love that song.

I've never cared for U2. And yes, Bono does have a massive ego. Even big enough to rival Celine Dion's.

This should really go in the joke thread:

There are some people you should never invite to your house, particularly if you're having a party.

1. Dolly Parton - she would never get her bosom through the door.

2. Liberace - he would never get his piano through the door.

3. Bono - he would never get his ego through the door!

Not sure I get the Bono ego thing. I guess I've never seen him in interview.

It's always been a running joke back home. The other cool thing to do is to either claim you went to Mount Temple (the school where they met) or that you know their families.

It's probably the way he walks. Allegedly, it's a swagger, but actually it's the weight of his ego!

Rats! I've fallen back into the "cool" thing. I do love him, really. :D

Edit: do people have a "right" to have a big ego if they are supremely talented and have piles of dosh and whatnot?

I have a huge ego about being smart. I once said to my mom that it's alright to think you're superior to people when you are. What else are you supposed to feel?

You get such a ragging back home if you act superior that I learned not to do it. There are times when I have laid claim to vast swathes of knowledge - only to be knocked on my bum! I reckon God is carrying on where my parents left off! ;)

Yeah well Ryan and I are much more scholarly than our families and we tend to know all the answers to everything including 'why is the sky blue'.

Back to music.

I want to complain about the price of large venue concerts. I wanted to see The Police when they were on tour but not for $130. Anyone else?

Yazoo have been dead since the 80's and Vince Clarke's other project, Erasure, hasn't had a hit for ten years or more. So why are the cotton-picking tickets to Yazoo's show £45 quid, eh? Eh? UB40 didn't charge that much, and they are still going!

Nine Inch Nails is going on tour again and I can get advance tix cuz I'm on the mailing list. They aren't coming around here the first leg. The last time we saw NIN tix were $60, we had to drive 120 miles (gas and tolls) pay $10 for parking and NIN only played for an hour and a half at most. I was SOOOOO **. The concert was over by 11 pm. They played just as long as Queens of the Stone Age who opened for them. Not that I didn't enjoy QotSA (see previous post) but I didn't buy the tix to see THEM.

I've been listening to some Frank Klepacki's compositions over and over again lately. The man is a fantastic video game music composer. His music is mainly electronic stuff, or "rocktronic", as he likes to call it.

A song I keep listening to lately is Stargazer by Rainbow. It's sort of what you'd call proto-symphonic metal. Symphonic metal is metal music infused with orchestral elements. Stargazer is, as far as I know, the first metal song to be played with a full orchestra. It's a fantastic song, Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Dio on vocals, and some really good lyrics. Most of Rainbow's stuff is very fantasy-based and this song is no exception. It tells a story of a man enslaved along with many others by some sort of a wizard, as he's called. They're forced to build a tower of stone, by which the wizard hopes to reach the sky (probably linked with the ancient belief that by building up, people would reach the gods). Of course, when the wizard tries to use his tower to leave the Earth behind, he falls as the builders of the tower look on. It leaves off with the people now free and going back home. There's another song that continues the story, A Light in the Black, which is also very good. I'd recommend these songs to anyone who enjoys that sort of music.

I was just listening to Simon & Garfunkel's Greatest Hits. I've been listening to 'The Boxer' on repeat. I do love that song - well ALL their songs are great. And I just recently learned why Scarborough Fair makes no sense to modern listeners - it's a 1600's folk song about an elf capturing a girl and promising to set her free if she can do an impossible task. The refrain 'parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme' represent different emotions and are explained in herb lore. Pretty cool huh? You can learn more by googling the song meaning.

Oh, I always thought is was some kind of spell that she had to break to get her lover back.

#71 May 30th, 10:34am

It was originally a duet with a woman and a man - the man would tell the woman to do an impossible task and then the woman would reply with a more impossible task. The Scarborough Fair was an old month-long festival where people from all over Europe would come to trade goods.

Well, I like a lot of the old Simon&Garfunkel stuff, too, but some of it I find just too cheesy, especially "Bridge over Troubled Water".

I am very partial to Paul Simon's lyrics. :D

Years ago, the Guiness Book of World Records used to have an entry for 'Loudest Band in the World'. This category was held for many years by the Who, but it was eventually discontinued because the people at Guiness thought it might be promoting hearing loss. The band commonly believed to hold the title of Loudest in the World is the American metal band, Manowar, and they are apparently constantly trying to break their old records to continue holding their place.

The Eighties musician and singer Howard Jones played a concert somewhere in Canada, and the police came to investigate complaints of excessive noise. Howard proved to them that his instruments were not the problem - 'twas the crowd cheering. "So if you want to go to each one of them and ask them for $2.45 as their share of the fine," explained Howard, only to be told it would not be necessary!

I love almost every genre of music.

Artists, on the other hand, I am picky about.

I also play/write my own sheet music, so I always sit and scrutinize music until I can hear and feel every note played (or sung, I guess this shows I love classical or symphonic music most).

The music I listen to, I would say is mostly Pop, R&B, and Ballad, and you can throw a little Rock in there as well. I mostly listen to Japanese, Korean, and Chinese boy/girl band songs. I also like listening to Reggae and Hawaiian songs like Ekolu, Zack Kekona, or Justin Kawika Young.

I just found this studio recording of Nine Inch Nails 'The Becoming' (Still version). For those not into NIN, Trent always records like, five versions of ever song he writes. I always loved this song. The original version is pretty creepy. This version is very beautiful and more intense than the original studio recording. I really like the live performance feel. I've been listening to it for 2 days. If you like progressive metal weird rock styles you'll probably dig it.

Looks like I'm the first country music fan to post here. Give me screeching guitars and wailing fiddles any day of the week and I'm happy. I've been listening to a lot of Miranda Lambert, Josh Turner, and Big & Rich lately, mostly through YouTube, because the country stations around here only play the popular artists.

Meh, I'm more of a metal person. Mostly for NWOBHM (And bands that are just plain heavy metal, British or otherwise), symphonic metal, gothic metal, power metal and progressive metal.

Anyways, one of my favorite metal bands is Tarot. They hail from Finland and have had a good underground following for many years, until their lead singer/bassist joined Nightwish, and they emerged from the underground. But hell, they deserve all the fans they can get.
