Topic: A Place for Everyone to Rant
Plagiarized from my own post on "The Fireplace":

Yeah. I'm getting really tired of seeing original stories here. Xing went to all the trouble of making a separate site just for the original stories so this one wouldn't be overloaded with them. The worst offenders are in the Misc Section. They usually have some shit like "I didn't know where else to put this". I guess the Guidelines you have to agree to before you post each story that say "ORIGINAL FICTION CAN NOT BE POSTED HERE/GO TO FICTIONPRESS" or something like that are just too complex to understand.

Assholes.

In any event, this is where I will be keeping a catalogue of all the badly written original shit posted here that pisses me off.

Because when I click on a category, I want to fucking read a fic about that fandom. Not some shitty ass center-justified italicized piece of shit poem about an angsty dumped teenager in wuuuuuv.

Feel free to vent about crap that pisses you off here, if you feel the need.

Oh! Oh! I want to vent about random crap that pisses me off! We talking fanfiction here? Because algebra pisses the hell out of me.

Okay. Fanfiction.

Examples of something I hate:

"Nice chapter! Especially seeing Cream there! And you know what? Cream's my favorite Sonic character, too! She's so cute, isn't she?

Cream: And because you make me your favorite Sonic character, I made this especially for you! (Cream puts a flower crown on your head)

Me: So anyway...

Both: Please continue!"

Another:

"Naruto: (in his sexy jutsu form) Hi there!

Jason, Jiraiya, others: (Nosebleeds)

Naruto: (turns back into his normal form) Gyahahahahahahaha! I call it, Oiroke no jutsu!

Everyone: AHO! (Aho means fool or idiot in japanese) DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME LEARNUNG THAT JUTSU!

Jason: But it's good!

Samara: You pervert. (smacks Jason's head)

Ray Lin: Naruto no ecchi!(throws her shuriken at him, but missed)"

I don't think the last review had anything to do with the fic.

I got these both from the Cartoon Crossovers section. *Why* do so many people there think that they're funny and clever with characters and OC doing dialogue with them in their reviews? Why?! I don't even receive these reviews! And they still piss me off!

Oh, and as for your original stories rant, FR... when I was an adorable little n00b at this site, I would look at original fics that got flamed for being original and think "I don't get it! What's the problem?" But now that I'm older (by six months or so) and wiser, the sheer number of original fics is bothering me, too.

I hate author's notes that are longer than the story.

I mean, the whole point you signed up on FF.net is to write STORIES, not incredibly long author's notes. Normally, I wouldn't mind if there was a point to the author's notes, but if it's just random rambling about nothing, than it pisses me off.

Another thing: when people write five sentence paragraphs for a chapter. I'll admit, my chapters are short, but usually aren't shorter than 220 words or so. It just defeats the point of writing a story if it's a short paragraph. Readers (or me at least) like being occupied with long chapters that are interesting, and not repitive, or boring.

Yeah, that's my *incredibly* short rant for now.

What peeves me off? Song Lyrics.

They're a)not allowed on the site and b) it's just plan annoying to read about these characters that randomly break out into song. Hello, this is fiction, not a musical. (unless you're writing in a fandom of a musical, then I don't know what to say) Anyway, songs are really distracting in the flow of a story. I mean, you're reading, reading, reading, getting really into it and then BAM! the lead character's singing her heart out to some hit song from last year that 'expresses how she's feeling'. Talk about killing the mood.

I think the Harry Potter fandom is terrible at this. I espeically hate that you have these HP characters singing current songs and wearing the current fashion trends. I wonder if these people have realized that the series takes place in the 90s.

I was seriously considering an entire rant for how much I hate songfics. Everything you said is exactly on target. I can't stand them. If I see one more fic based on an Evanescence *shudders* song, I can't be held accountable for what might happen...

Huh... I'm happy you can't read French, F/R (or can you...?).

Heheh. Guilty of that one, I suppose. Even if it was back in 2004, where almost every single fic in the French part of the Harry Potter fandom was a songfic.

Anyway. What I hate the most, and I've let many people know untill now, is those who write in French in an English fic when there's absolutely no point in doing that. And even more when it's poorly written French.

Hey! I know French is supposed to be romantic (Though I don't see what *is* actually romantic in saying two random sentences that most likely no one will understand... Hell, I don't even see what can be romantic in the whole French vocabulary!), but find a reason! And find a translator, for god's sake!

Other thing? Huh... Endless author notes where they talk about (or with) characters of the fandom, or just random things. Don't know why, but I'm sure it'll end as a subject here someday. If no one suggest it ever, I'll do.

"How to make author's note that don't make the reader want to die"... Just by itself, it IS important.

When I see an endless author note, most of the time I won't even bother to scroll to the story. The 'back' button is way easier...

Same applies to disclaimer, too.

Please... All the "*cries* *sniff* *sees the readers* *stop crying* Oh... I don't own my favorite characters... *cries again*" things, we've seen them. For once, if you can't come up with something that will make the readers smile (really! not in your imagination!), get on with the simple "all the characters and universe belongs to *name of the author or company*, I don't get money for it".

It's way better... Or at least way less annoying.

Is fan fiction all you read? All your life?

I thought you guys already agreed that these stuff aren't worth your while? But maybe because you're all so pathetic and possibly don't have a life, you go on reading anyway.

Fan fictions are the worst. They're for people who apparently don't have vast enough imagination and anyone who's as affected by them as you are simply has to get a life. Come on, they're just stories made up by a pre-teenage mind that probably can't spell 'dog' correctly twice in a sentence. Why harbor this much hatred? They're stupid people, so? What's new?

I think in cases like that we need to take our own advice that we dole out to flamunchkins. In the end, what does this faceless person on the internet, randomly insulting us and whatnot, mean to us? Is it worth the energy and/or thought to really get this worked up about it? This is what we tell flamunchkins who are upset about being flamed; shouldn't we try to take our own advice about trolls who try to bait us into acting up?

It is, on both accounts ;)

Someone once gave me a great comeback to use on my more tattle-tale sorts of kids: whenever you point your finger at someone, remember that three fingers are pointing back at you.

I'm not saying we're pointing any fingers. Just using it as an analogy of sorts about giving and taking our own advice.

I hate fucking research! I hate scouring through the internet, doing random f-ing searches with varieties of the same fricking sentence over and over and over again to get information that will make my story sound authentic. I hate caring about it...like who the FUCK cares if I get the procedures after a patient sticks a pen in his eye at a clinical psychologists office? WHO CARES? He's bleeding like a stuck pig and screaming about shadows coming for him! Who the hell cares what the Doctor has to do afterward? Who cares about the paperwork, or the phone calls, or the fact the kids a minor, or the fact how many hours would it take for him to be committed, or would he have to go to the hospital or the mental facility first? It's like one little BLIP of dialogue and maybe three sentence of narration!

*pants* Okay, I'll just have my character say he "took care of it." It could work, nice and vague...and it shows that I have NO IDEA what I'm talking about! AHHHHH!!

*headdesk*

Yeah, I'm pretty sure we're talking about fanfiction here. But I would still like to establish that: I. F**king. Hate. Algebra. I seriously doubt I will EVER have to know how to make a radical function.

Anyways, you know what I really hate? When people make fics about my favorite bands (I know it's against the rules anyway) and they're slash. Do these people seriously think I want to read about how Pete Wentz totally wants to screw the lead singer of his band? Do they think I want to know how aforementioned lead singer's lips/hips feel to aforementioned Wentz? No. I don't. Have I ever read one of these fics? Uh, NO, NO, why do you ask?!

#18 May 13th 2007, 8:45am
The Sugarfaerie
You know what I hate? When writers can't accept constructive criticism. *big sigh* Here goes...

I'm not a flamer. I can occasionally be quite harsh with my criticism if a particular fic is really pissing me off. But what really annoys me is when a writer replies to my review, whining about how I didn't like their fic, but that's not their fault, and they just used their imagination, bla bla bla... And they're really hurt and upset because they poured their heart and soul into the fic, bla bla bla...

It's really irritating, because they seem to have missed the point. Criticism of a writer's work is not a criticism of the writer themselves. Do these people think that published writers never get a critique of their work? Even Shakespeare has his critics. And if the story really means so much to them, why did they post it on a public website where everyone in the world can see it? And, most importantly, if this fic supposedly contains their heart and soul, why is it so horribly written and why have they obviously not proofread it?

There seems to be some idea floating around that writing is an artform which cannot be taught. This is wrong. It's true that imagination is something you're born with, bla bla bla, but how you shape your imagination, how you develop it into original ideas and then use language to make those ideas come alive for readers, that is a skill that must be learnt and practiced. No one is 'born' a writer. And often those writing skills cannot possibly be learnt without someone else teaching them to you. Particularly grammar.

And my favourite comeback? When I pick someone up for their misuse (or complete lack) of grammar or sentence structure, and the writer comes back with a whiny reply that that's just their 'style'. No, actually, it's not a 'style'. It's just wrong. Grammar, structure and so on can be shaped and used to great effect. One sentence paragraphs, incomplete sentences and punctuation can work wonders when used effectively. But only once proper grammar has been learnt! Only then can you use it to effect and bend language to your will. You have to walk before you can run!

/end rant. Sorry, just had to get that off my chest!

I'm not 'peeved' about this, I find it rather funny.

One day I decided to give out con-crit to some new authors who desperately needed it. One replied to me, with the excuse that she's only thirteen. So I guess being thirteen excuses shitty spelling and grammar in their summary? -Laughs- I'm not that much older myself, so if you'll excuse me, I'm off to write a story with shitty sentence structure and some grammar mistakes just for varity, and if you tell me I'm wrong, I'm just PM you back saying, 'Well, I'm only a teenager!'

Frodo is in his fifties in the books, actually. For some reason, Gandalf lets the whole pressing business of The Ring lapse for seventeen years, which ratchets down the tension a bit. However, fifties for a hobbit is the equivalent of thirties for one of us.

I'm fine with yaoi, etc., but only if the characters can be reasonably envisioned as such.

I'm tired of stories where a canon character suddenly finds himself female, without any of that weird crap. That's what gets me. If a character is female, then they won't "suddenly" find themeselves to be male, not without some serious dirty magic.

I know this is a repeat of just about every post in this thread, but whatever:

I am *so* fucking sick of illiterate - ignorant? - writers who think that, "Ooh! This little section says 'Musicals/Plays!' And then that one says 'Wicked!' Why not post my kick-butt awesome emo poem/story involving vampires and REAL LIFE PEOPLE in there? After all, poems are basically songs and vampires are wicked! Yeah!" It...irks...me...to...no...end...

It happens *all* the time in my fandom and in the Musical/Plays section.

"As of 29th of April 2007 ill no longer use this account due to idiotic people who think they work for FF.net and have nothing better to do than leave hurtful messages to others regarding where they post fanfiction or what the fiction is about.

Therefore Im posting fiction on a private site where my loyal readers can access them because im not going to sop my fiction that they enjoy reading, I also have no intention of deleting the stuff Ive posted here, if ff.net are really bothered about it they (and i mean the people who actually do have power) can delete it, im not going to just because a few idiots told me to, they dont own or control me."

^^ Courtesy of the profile of one of the people I "reviewed". Then one of their "loyal" reviewers said:

I think that this story has been well crafted and thought out well, the author has obviously taken time to write the story and come up with an interesting plot.

A review is meant to be a useful critism about the story, not someone randomly slagging off the author.

If you don't like it, don't review it.

And whether it is or isn't breaking the rules, don't do 'fanfiction' a favour by 'saving' them from what you think is rubbish. It is the job of fanfiction and it's admin, not some random dark avenger... And definately don't act like you're doing them a favour when you are actually just going to slag them off.

It is a good story, I hope that you will update depsite the negativity.

And yet another one of her reviewers:

wow! a mizer fic! ive been lookin all over for a decent mizer fic! its fantastic, oh and for the 'reviewer' below this comment, report abuse is for reporting ABUSE! not to say to admin and mods that there is a fan fiction out of place! if i where the girl who wrote this fan fic i would actually use the report ABUSE button on you... because that is basicly all you and your 'clones' have been doing, you have been harassing this poor girl for doing nothing wrong other than to write a fic for people to enjoy

-explodes-

I can't stand it anymore. Really, I can't.

Haha. Maiafay, this might make you hate me.

I don't like fics that aren't researched. The fact that an author spent the time to actually find information that only takes up three sentences of the narration just shows how meticulous the author is. I'm not going to waste my time reading a work that's written by some lazy-ass writer who doesn't care about presenting accurate information. For instance, I once read this story that had a group of horses charge into a field of pikes [LotR's wonderful portrayal of that Helm's Deep charge was literally unbelievable because the horses would have been skewered]. I winced. Suspension of belief goes a long way, but it can't account for the lack of research.

Needless to say, I'm a research freak, and unsurprisingly, I write better research papers than stories.

Meh, I'm over my hissy fit. Gotta curb my sensitivity sometimes.

I have to have buttloads of research before I can write a "place" realistically. I have a mental institution to deal with, and these stupid little articles online want me to me a psychologist before they can give me any information. I did manage to glean as much as I could on LPN's and RN's and the other employees from job searches. I didn't know they had to have a Dentist on staff, or a Clinical Dietitian, or even an accountant. They even gave me salaries (damn they make money!).

Then I pretended I was searching for one to commit me. LMAO!! I need to find one that has a virtual tour...

The one thing I absolutely hate is people who are insulted when you try to correct them and thus insult you. I try not to flame people, but it's so hard when they mutilate the English language. I corrected one person many ages ago and they sent me a message back cursing me and telling me I had no clue what it was like to be them. S/he ranted on and on how it wasn't fair to be critisized by someone who A) had both parents B) was popular and C) never saw the anime the fanfic was written for. Ok. S/he was wrong on all accounts and I don't see how any of them relate to the person's slaughtering of the English langauge.

I mean, I know I do it, but I do it on purpose.

Here's shit that pisses me off: a rather significant deposit is due to the school I applied to for graduate work in two weeks. There really is no courtesy in the world anymore, TDF. I'm sorry this is happening to you, because I know it's a large undertaking, in time, money and mental preparation. I love the attitude of big institutions, and I don't mean just colleges, that think *they* can let things slid, then expect you to pull a miracle out of the air at the last minute, such as finding money, rearranging your schedule or perhaps finding a different route to pursuing your goal. Bahh, sorry to rant, but this sort of rudeness pisses me royally.

Thank you, SW :)

I think the other thing that's frustrating is that there is a two-week high-intensity workshop that's part of the class, that happens in August. Well, my family has planned our first major family vacation in YEARS for August. We're all flying to Montana together; my brother, who lives in LA and has been home twice in three years, is meeting up with us, and we're doing to just have a nice family vacation. I can't wait for it. But I also don't know when in August the workshop session is, and I'm guessing that due to the nature of the program it is out of the question for me to be excused from it. I'd just like to know if this is something I even *need* to worry about. Not being accepted yet, and not knowing the exact dates of the workshop, and even if it'll get in the way of my previous plans, is also rather irritating.

And here's the review I sent this chick.

1. Your character is a Marysue. Plain and simple. She has an extra millennium item that shouldn't be there (Do the Math, there's only seven items and they were given to specific people), and she has a yami.

2. Your grammar sucks. You have no respect for the English language whatsoever. You've posted this here for the SAKE of excellent reviews when the story is (Sorry, but it IS) simply crap. The LEAST you could have done was put effort into your work. This story has no effort put into it. It's just something you jotted down at the last minute. And whoever told you that your grammar was getting better needs to work on his/her OWN grammar. I suggest having a nice, LONG conversation with your English teacher before you grace this site with anymore...well crap.

3. Please, PLEASE keep the fangirl Japanese out of your fics. If you MUST use Japanese terms, use them in the correct manner.

4. You're failing miserably in trying to pass this fic as a Yugioh episode. Please, stop...you're giving a bad name to the creator himself.

5. Your first Yugioh fic, eh? Either way, there's no excuse for this horrible story.

Please, get some help with your fics. A few people pointed out that your character is a Marysue.

How about following THEIR advice?

-

And she has THIS many items in her profile. Flame Rising has GOT to have a word with her.

-

The Millennium Mirror

The Millennium Brooch

The Millennium Taira

The Millennium Box

The Millennium Bracelet

-

And...this is the reply I received.

-

PLEASE COULD YOU MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS. MY FIC AND MY CHARACTER HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU. PLEASE FOCUS ON YOUR OWN STUFF AND IF YOU SPAM ME AGAIN I REPORT YOU. F**K OFF! I'LL KEEP WARITE MY FICS THE WAY I WANT TOO. GO TO HELL

-

And...she emailed that to me too! ._.

-

And...she blocked me, and so I emailed her.

-

You know what?

You can go FUCK yourself.

This was THE first time I reviewed your fic. I told you how I felt

about it. Your character is a Marysue, and your writing is bad. You

have some attiitude for a twenty year old. If you don't want someone

telling you that something is wrong with your writing, then do me the

damn favor of NOT writing anymore. I spammed you? I spammed you, when

I have every damn right to review your story?

I can report you for breaking the Terms of Service with your atrocious

writing, but guess what?

The administrators won't do a DAMN thing about your story!

Just as they won't do a damn thing with me for being honest with your

story. It says in the FF guidelines that NOT EVERYONE WILL LIKE YOUR

DAMN STORY. It doesn't say kiss the author's ass because she's a damn

good writer.

You don't scare me with your words. You're a poor excuse for a twenty

year old, especially WHEN you should have learned proper grammar in

high school AND junior high. There is NO excuse for that story.

Do get over yourself my dear. And if you email ME again, I can report

you at gmail for spamming.

Have a nice day!

And YOU FUCK OFF.

Think I can't curse as bad as you can?

It's YOUR fic. I hope someone ELSE flames the hell out of you as well.

It's about TIME someone stands up to idiots like YOU and give you a

negative review. Your reviewers were kissing your ass.

I WON'T BE ONE OF THEM.

I love how you went through the trouble of sending this to me twice. I

didn't cower in FEAR from your capslock of DOOM.

Goodbye and good riddance! :-)

Things like that piss me off to no end.

Yet another Monday and still no word on grad school. I have to wonder how badly I really want to bother with going at this point.

Have you called the admissions office? I would just to put a fire under their asses. When I was accepted to my undergrad school, I was offered a nice scholarship that I needed in order to go (it was quite expensive...bastards). They made a mistake in the amount (giving me less than they should have), and I had to wait until the last day of registration before they cleared it up and I knew for sure I could financially afford to go with the right scholarship. I was literally registering the last hour before the registrar's closed. I still have my fingers crossed for you!
