I'm in desperate need of a beta, but most of the fanfics I write are for a relatively small fandom and no one who writes there has offered.

Does anyone here watch the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy? I love that cartoon.

If not a beta, I'd appreciate a con-crit on one of my fics if anyone has the time.

I'm looking to be a beta, so this sounds like a good opportunity! I've put a notice on my profile, but nobody's sent me any beta requests yet. :) I'll gladly proofread a story, depending on what you need a beta for. Spelling and grammar are all I can do well so far.

Spelling and grammar are all I can do well so far.

I probably won't need much help with that; I'm pretty much [usually] sparkling with spelling and grammar. Are you good at critiquing prose though--the style, the technique? That's mainly what I'm looking for.

To anyone else, I'm also offering to be a beta in the following categories: The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Artemis Fowl, Harry Potter, and Xiaolin Showdown (I don't write in that category anymore but I still retain a lot of knowledge about the show from when I used to obsess over it.)

Edit: Adding to the beta advertisement--however, in any category at all I can help with spelling and grammar. I doubt anyone will ask, but just in case they do...

Redgirl44, I was wondering if maybe you could read my story and decide if I need a beta. If I do I would be happy if you did it, just tell me what I would need to do to allow you to be my beta.

Lotrelves, I think your story could use a beta, or at least some editing. I see that you've received a lot of good advice in the reviews for that story, but if you want a beta reader for chapters before they're posted, just drop me a line. I'm not sure how you would go about allowing me to be your beta, actually.

What I mean is, how could I send you the entire chapter before I post it without having to type it all over again in a private message?
#8 May 15th 2007, 3:06pm
OMG it's WickedJelly
You could copy and paste it into a PM.
#9 May 15th 2007, 3:06pm
lotrelves
How do I do that?
#10 May 15th 2007, 3:07pm
OMG it's WickedJelly
Well, um, open the document you have your story typed up in and highlight all you want to send. Then, right-click on the higlighted part (with your mouse) and press 'copy'. Then go to your empty PM, right-click on the empty space, and press 'paste'. Your words will "magically" appear in the PM!

...that is what you wanted, right? Because...yeah.

You could give her your email over PM if you wanted to, and the two of you could correspond via email. If you're not comfortable giving out your actual email, you could always make a new one. (example, my email adresse has my name in it, which I'm definitely not going to give out over a website, so I made a new one for dealing with FF.net)

Also, if anyone ever needs a beta for Harry Potter, send me a PM or reply here.

I've never actually 'beta-ed' before, but

I edit stuff for friends all the time

I know the HP universe very well

I catch most typos, spelling and grammar errors

I'm blunt and honest (but very understanding!!!)

I fix up typos and such, but most time I tell you what you did wrong, and leave it for you to correct, so you learn from your mistakes.

I offer a different perpective and ask lots of questions (I love questions)

I've also read LOTR, but I'm not comfortable enough to beta about the canon mistakes, but I'm quite good at catching grammar and spelling, and giving other advice.

¤ debate the role of a beta in the writing process

As I have mentioned before (somewhere) avatarjk137 and I are co-writers. For a majority of our fics, one of us reads the latest chapters of the other's fics before they are sent in, to proofread for grammar and spelling errors, making sure characters are in character, and often times adding something or taking away something that does or doesn't need to be there (plus, I like the feeling of reading something before it gets sent in... 'exclusive' or 'sneak peek' or something).

Is that considered beta-ing?

in the United States judicial appeals process

Why would I do that?

I can beta for anyone.

Awesome 1337 betaing tips:

-Type out your story, edit it as much as you can, then forget about it. Come back to it a few days later and fix everything you missed the first time.

-Keep a dictionary (or spell check) in handy in case you dn't know how to spell a certain word.

-Ask a sibling or friend to check over it.

-Get a beta, if all else fails.

Oh, and:

-After you post it up, you can reread it and edit it. Then replace the chapter with the edited one. ;)

I've been meaning to ask someone this for a long time (it's REALLY bothering me)... Now, I know 1337 is some form of chatspeak, but for the life of me, I can't figure out what it says... could you perhaps translate it to readable, plain old English?

1337 - leet

Chatspeak for "elite", with the meaning that you're really good at a certain thing.

Thanks for offering. If you don't have the time to actually beta some stuff I'm gonna put up, could you look one of my more recent works over and give me some concrit on the prose?

I am a beta for 2 awesome people here (FF.net), so if you want to be one but aren't sure what they do or who the heck are they, feel free to ask. Ask if you want, but it's your choice. Whatevs.

I beta for someone. She hasn't been on ff.net for a while.

I beta my own work, and I help my friend with her homework.

But I'm too depressed right now to actually care.

For a short while, I thought I needed a beta. But even though I write with Wordpad (which doesn't have a spellcheck) my stories probably don't have any spelling errors at all...Well, at least in my newest ones. I just read the finished chapter after writing it, and then I post it.

I'm willing to offer help in Chrono Crusade, FF7, V for V, Avatar, Naruto (though I'm ashamed to even mention it), plus some other animes that I can't really remember right now.

Anyone need help?

#29 May 21st 2007, 8:58pm

I'm willing to read anything.

Beat anything.

But I usually do better in deferent areas. The only thing i don't do very well is anime. I read it, and beta it, btu I don't always do the concepts/characters. Sonic the Hedgehog, star Wars, House M.D. ...pretty much everything.
