GandalfTGTopic: D&D 4.0 Opinion Weigh In!
Ok, went out and played D&D 4th Ed on WWD&D Day. Came home, torrented the books, and read through the PHB. Everyone who spent their hard earned money on the books? you have my sympathies! While I love the fact that a Wizard can now use their primary attack through out an encounter, I really don't like how it assumes that A: I'm frickin stupid. B: I'm incapable of ROLE playing, all I can do is ROLL Play. (which I'll admit, is fairly true of most people out there.... but if that's the kind of game you want, get your GM to run it that way. don't make the rules so that it virtually requires that nonsense!) So I'm there, with my nice little Eladrin Wizard (I am NOT an Elf damnit!) and you know what? I've traded all my situational flexability to be capable of casting magic missile more than twice a day at level 1. I can no longer buff my party. I can no longer charm a damned thing. I'VE BEEN LABOTOMIZED! So, I Quit. I won't be buying the books for 4th Ed. I won't be playing any 4th Ed games. I'll stick to D&D 3.x and Rifts and all the other games out there that don't insult me and my players by assuming that we only want hack & slash gaming... I mean, why on earth would a wizard want to be able to Talk to other people??? Inconcievable! |

troyguffeyYes, I prefer a game that doesn't insult my intelligence. But I prefer GURPS. Down with classes, up with flexibility! RIFTS is a background universe that could be simulated better using GURPS. Assuming you wanted to power-munchkin.... :-) As for D&D 4, I've heard enough not to want to upgrade from the 3.0 PHB book that I've got. I wouldn't even bother to torrent them, unless the Shauncon (local gaming convention) Living games switch up to 4. -- GURPS Forever! |

GandalfTGYes, I prefer a game that doesn't insult my intelligence. But I prefer GURPS. Down with classes, up with flexibility! - not an unpopular sentiment. White Wolf has been doing this for a good long time, and has been rather successful, I just don't care for the settings. RIFTS is a background universe that could be simulated better using GURPS. Assuming you wanted to power-munchkin.... :-) - This is also something I've heard several times before. Then again, the only thing I'm not all that thrilled with in the Palladium Megaversal System is the skills system. I do have a preference for the d20 system there... combat however, I do prefer Palladium. Mmm... Munchkin... great game... :) As for D&D 4, I've heard enough not to want to upgrade from the 3.0 PHB book that I've got. I wouldn't even bother to torrent them, unless the Shauncon (local gaming convention) Living games switch up to 4. - Personally, I don't mind the 3.5 system, it's not that bad really, though, I do have 3 pages of "House Rules" which are more along the lines of clarifications and the list of optional rules that I run at my games. For some things though, like psionics, I prefer second edition. It was a little bit more complicated, but then, once you got the hang of it, it was very flexable, especially if you used Core Rules 2.0 to generate your characters. - There are some things I like about 4th Edition, like the fact that the Wizard gets at least one spell that he can just keep casting, all day long, just like the Warrior can keep swinging his sword all day long. That the magic system has lost so many spells, it's really rather sad... - AD&D 2 was rather well balanced, especially with the way it handeled multi- and Dual- classing. 3.0 had a few problems, but wasn't terible. 3.5 was pretty good all around, the magic classes could have used a little bit of a boost early on, and a little bit of toning down later on, but I figure that kinda balanced each other out, and people can complain all they want, Warriors and Wizards were very well balanced against each other, BY THE BOOK. If one was clearly more powerful than the other at your gaming table, then that's your GMs fault, not the system itself. - Setting and how the GM runs the game are far more important than the System, but without a workable system, there is little that the GM or the Setting can do to make a Bad System worth playing... That is my general opinion of 4th Edition |
