Let's just say that I've been doing a bit of disgruntling lately in the review department of the Mario fandom. It's not really been flames, mind - just some very harsh, stark criticism about the lack of legibility and general illiteracy in some of these "authors'" works. Anyway, one of these authors wrote a half of a page of text, called it a fic, and got positively livid when I took it apart and told her exactly what I thought was wrong with it. Anyway, after a couple of exchanges through PM (nasty, vitriolic, unintelligible tripe from her, and calm, eloquent, condescending remarks from me), she finally got around to reviewing my "Mario Teaches Fanfiction," story (which is ironically a lampoon on badly written fanfiction anyway). :) This is her review, verbatim:

YOU COULD MAKE 100 CHAPTERS OUT OF THIS ONE!

IT'S SO LAMME!

This person (who I shall not name, since her fragile little ego is apparently in tatters from my review and needs no more attention which does her no good anyway) is referring to a particular comment I made in my review of the story of one of her ficcie "friends" about her lack of detail. Yes, she's referring to a review I made to a DIFFERENT author. o_o Anyway, I had explained to this person that several of the point of view changes she made were unnecessary in one chapter; she would have been much better off expounding on the detail and splitting each section up into its own chapter. Notice how my gallant flamer bastardized my words and thinks she's oh-so-clever. :p

I sent her a reply, tended lovingly with diatribes and cracks taken from my special reserve of bitchiness:

Thank you for providing me with your barely legible, yet highly laughable review. I want you to know that we at Shuko-Works appreciate your concerns, and we will be having many good chuckles, guffaws, and chortles at your expense later on at the water cooler. Please know that your verbal faux pas do not go to waste here at Shuko-Works! They are a valued and integral part of the fanfiction ecosystem, and they make up the majority of the fanfic manure that is used to nourish and grow young seedling fics. Again, thank you for your contribution.

Having said that, I'll put on my serious cap once again *places cap on head.*

First of all, I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that you're referring to the comment I gave you on your inexpressive, under-detailed fic, am I correct? The fact that you make no reference to any passage in particular only tells me that you did not read my fic, which is understandable, considering the fact that I find your reading capabilities as suspect as your writing ones. Do not worry. I have not been offended by your ignorance.

Also, if you feel that I have wronged you in my assessment of your review, you are more than welcome to reply to me via PM, whereupon I shall belittle you further, or you begin to form coherent sentences and arguments - whichever happens first.

And seriously, thank you for the laugh. I really needed it today. :3

Original Message:

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-

YOU COULD MAKE 100 CHAPTERS OUT OF THIS ONE!

IT'S SO LAMME!

By the way, I always include their original message in the reply. I've had so many people swear they never said something when they did. -_- It just saves an extra loop of conversation this way.

Anyway, I keep thinking this is a momentous occasion. I now have my first "retributionary" flame. :3 Does this mean I'm special?

Although it is your decision to 'retribution flame', I've never advocated fighting fire with fire.

and general illiteracy in some of these "authors'"

And because of that little doozy of a line there, it is technically classed as a flame because it attacks the author personally. You've been to my forum, you've seen the 'definition of flame' thread, so why do you insist on giving 'harsh concrit'?

I did have several flames a while ago, by the Dark Radiance, but those stories were deleted and I blocked that member.

Just so you know, that little crack never appeared in any of my reviews. 9_9 I was just voicing my opinion (here in the forum, not in a review) about how people who think that drabbling on in a bit of fluff with no plot, no purpose, and no respect for the ToS of the site makes them full-fledged authors.

Anyway, the "retribution flame" is what SHE gave ME. I never flamed her in the first place. I gave her harsh con-crit. There's a difference. And I'm well within my right to con-crit people, just as she's within her right to flame me about it, in whatever way she chooses.

I NEVER insult the authors in my reviews. I point out inadequacies in their works as part of the review process. If that's an insult to them, then they need to develop a thicker skin. Writing isn't all about gumdrops and rainbows, and I'm not going to shield them from the truth just to save their feelings. I'll point out what I like about their story too, but I'll also be sure to point out what I find lacking.

We shouldn't be having this conversation here. :/ I thought this thread was just for posting our flames we'd received.

Edit:

Lol. The person who sent me that review is now getting her cronies to pitch in:

This is crap, colette11 was being too nice. What're you retarded or

something?

I think you just been dazzled

This particular bit of insight is brought to me courtesy of a user named Twanny Bizzle - another one I've concritted heavily. I wouldn't mind so much his calling my story crap if he actually provided examples to back himself up. As it is, he's only telling me that he's still peeved that I dared to criticize his story, so he's going to drop this in my review pile and expect me to believe that he even read my story. xD

My stories aren't literary gold; they aren't crap either. I have enough confidence in my own abilities to say that without hesitation. His review doesn't bother me. I just wish he'd taken the time to be more creative about it. Alas, he seems to take as much of an interest in the details of his flames as he does in that of his fiction. :/

Yeah but flames are no better & concrit already does that. Bashing on your forum can work(probably w/o sporking since it might be against ToS) but flaming...I don't know.

Since when have the ToS ever been enforced? All of the Sins' and Spleef's stories were stolen by both Kaiser and the Novella Sins. Where's the justice in that? The truth of the matter is that the admins have abandoned us. They no longer care and we must now fend for ourselves. It's an anarchy. The rules are meaningless.
#14 Nov 13th 2007, 9:26pm
Irindiglo-Ole
It is occasionally tho, the administration is either swamped or slow, but if they did act quicker Kaiser, FR, and ectera wouldn't even be on anymore.
#15 Nov 13th 2007, 9:28pm
Artemis Mitera
Do we really need this chaos? Does it really have to be enforced. Besides, this is better used than Fictionpress which has been totally abandoned in every right. FF is lucky to even have these updated compared to FP. Do we really need to create chaos in order to make a sense out of this "WEBSITE" for better writers?

Umm....

After reading the Mary Sue article, I think I may have accidentally unleashed a Sue into the world *cringes in horror*.

have you read that one I wrote where Sakura goes on a 2 person killing spree? I think I turned poor Sakura into an angry sue....

I might've missed that 1, is that where she whoops Sasuke and Naruto(?) nonstop?

If she has flaws then she might not be, IDK, Angry-Sue, lol.

Maybe take a Mary-Sue test...

I've got it! Maybe she's just a Scary-Sue! Like a Harry-Sue(courtesy of McFly)
#31 Nov 14th 2007, 11:09am
Tranquil Anarchy
That's the one where she beats Kiba and Naruto to death with their own guitars.

And I just thought of something, only OC's can be Sues! She is saved! Come to think of it...I only made her OOC. *Jumps for Joy and dismantles sniper rifle which is positioned on a rooftop waiting for Sakura to leave the house* Now I don't have to put her out of her misery.

However, now that I've had a moment, I suddenly realise that the article is not necessarily right. I don't like the way he called one of the most famous writers of all time, a Sue. Plus, a Sue is a Sue; who honestly calls a male Sue a Marty Sue? Everyone just calls them Mary Sues, despite their gender. Though i must agree with them on self-insertation, it isn't always bad. What's more, the definition of Sue changes from person to person. One person's Sue could be another person's believable OC.

#32 Nov 15th 2007, 1:04am
Irindiglo-Ole
Oh that's it, lol, but that's good! Only OCs are Sues. That's true, lol. Actually while some people use Gary Stu(MartyMcFly only wrote a fanfiction with Ron calling Harry, Harry-Sue when he changes his appearance into that of a girl named Mary Sue with polyjuice potion.) What is a Sue to some people is new to others, hehe. In some cases, though poor character, Sues aren't bad to write since it is still character writing, they are just bad to read.
