East Coast RyderTopic: GaGa Society A major underlying theme in WWRY is the society of Planet Mall itself. What does this society have as far as good and bad aspects go? Why do the kids automatically accept that being the same is good? After WWRY, how does GaGa land fare? Does education play as big a part in kids' lives? Does conformity in schools actually allow for a better learning environment, and the idea of total all-over conformity spring from that? Discuss. Okay, I found this article that kinda spawned this topic. It's on, in all essences, a cyber-school that reminds me of what GaGa kids might go to: http://www.wired.com/culture/education/news/2007/07/game_school It's really interesting- especially considering the idea of using gaming technology to learn- an effective way for people to teach and learn on Planet Mall- something the Bohos could take advantage of? | #1 Aug 06th 2007, 10:55am . Flo-DI've always thought of GaGa society as a bit like communism. It's good in that everyone has a chance because they're all encouraged to be/look the same and do the same things. So that gives (in theory) a more equal society and means that people distinguish themselves through strength of character and their deeds. On the other hand, all chances of individuality are squashed which means that progress is difficult and lots of people are unhappy. And you run the risk of a dictator...which is never good because they tend to get power crazed etc.The kids accept that being the same is good because that's what they've always been told and there's no reason for them to doubt that. Also, I think that the majority of people want to fit in and so act as other people around them are acting. Of course some people rebel but these are the minority. In GaGa society rebellion is far more difficult that in other situations because it is actually illegal. That's why there are so few Bohemians. The thing about conformity in schools is linked to the good and bad aspects of the society in general. It means you get a hundred kids who can add up and write an essay but none who have any real insight or great ideas because they're encouraged not to be different. So you're not going to get any geniuses but you're probably going to have less failures than if everyone was allowed to act individually. As to if that's a good thing, I'm not really sure. Possibly it is to some extent but the schools on Planet Mall have gone too far and just created thousands of clones. Anyway, I've written a huge amount and I have the horrible feeling it makes no sense so I'm going to leave it there. |

Werepuppy BlackAlthough I understand the communism aspect that you see Flo-D, I would have to disagree slightly. Yes I do believe that the main ideal in the GaGa society is for everyone to be equal, but we gotta remember that this is a society in which everyone is encouraged to buy the latest desirable item as soon as its avaible to download. In that sense, it's just an expanation of the capatislist society that we live in toady. It also seems to be a largely dictatorship, or perhaps an otucracy (sp?) - one person [Killer Queen] having full power. Hmm...I'll need to see if i can find those notes from a boring day in history. It was after the school trip to London - in which we got to go see the show - and a load of us sat around talking about it, trying to work out the politics of it. (Well we were bored and it did interest us. Mainly on how it seemed to be a very teen focused society.) |
