Strawberry EggsTopic: Magnus Card Oddities This is a topic on various unusual things you may have noitced concerning Magnus cards. I'm only going to post three here for now, but I figured that other people may have noticed other odd things.1) Beer If you were to check out the description on the Beer card, the last sentence specifically states "Prohibited by law for those under age 21". That only applies to two members of the party, Gibari and Savyna. However, there is nothing preventing you from putting those cards into the rest of the party's decks! Also, there are no reprecussion for using them on the "minors". You could argue that Kalas, Xelha, and Lyude are all mature enough to drink responsibly, but you can give beer to Mizuti, for the love of Arceus! There are also other alcoholic beverage healing items which can be given to anyone in the party freely. Why didn't the translators (I'm assuming this was added specifically for the English version) just let players think that the legal drinking age--if there is one--in the Baten Kaitos world is much lower than in the United States? I mean what's the point of putting in a warning against underage-drinking when you can ignore it so easily and not suffer any consequences? Furthermore, it makes Namco-Bandai (or Bandai-Namco, or whatever it is they're calling themselves these days) look like they're sending the wrong message. "You must be at least 21 to drink alcohol, but no one will really care if you aren't at least 21 so go ahead and drink!" O_o 2) Frozen Tangerine/Orange This is rather minor, but has anyone noticed that the Frozen Tangerine item can somehow turn into an Orange just by defrosting it? Similarly, freezing an Orange turns it into a Tangerine. They may both by citrus fruits, but a tangerine still looks and tastes differently from an orange. How does the mere act of freezing and defrosting change one fruit into another? It could be a side-affect from trapping it in a Magnus card. If trying to store living things on Magnus distorts it, perhaps it distorts dead things slightly (fruits are pretty much dead once they're plucked from a tree). Maybe by changing the Magnus card, the fruit stored is altered so that is sort of tastes like an orange or a tangerine. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it. :P 3) Tonguetwister Rouge The description on this card states "For Xelha and Savyna only. Not for you, Gibari!" Should we be disturbed that they specifically singled out Gibari? o_O | #1 Dec 04th 2007, 5:55am . Edited Dec 04th 2007, 7:25pm

Fan Fan GirlHahaha...You're funny, Strawberry. 1) - Hmmm... This one's tough. It's odd that the drinking age would be set at 21 for this card. Because in Japan it's 20. Which technically still wouldn't allow Kalas, Xelha, Lyude, or Mizuti to touch the stuff, but still... I think it would be a nice touch and a lot more realistic if the younger members weren't allowed to use the beer magnus, though. I also kind of wonder why there would be a drinking age in the Baten Kaitos world in the first place... It's not like you can drive cars. Well, there are the airship things, but then again they don't mention licenses or laws or anything for those either. This would be interesting to look into. 2) - No idea. 3) - There was a tonguetwister card? I don't remember ever seeing this one! Is this one of those ones where you have to mix some magnus together to get it? I never did that... | #2 Dec 04th 2007, 5:14pm . Edited Dec 04th 2007, 5:14pm

Strawberry EggsActually, I think that either Namco-Bandai changed the age on the card for the English version, or there never was a warning to begin with and it was just added in for the English version. Again, they may as well not have mentioned it if you could use Beer and other alcoholic drink cards on the "minors" in the party anyway. XP Heh, it's not as if other games haven't restricted alcohol from minors before. I haven't played it but according to one of my friends, in the Japanese version of the PS1 game Star Ocean 2, you can create alcoholic beverage healing items, HOWEVER only adults (20 and older I think) can actually make and drink them. Apparently, these drink were changed to "teas" in the English version, which really doesn't make any sense. Though I think having a drinking age is mainly there for driving and such, it's still not exactly a good idea to let kids drink, you know? There may very well be an age limit of some sort. Of course, I'm sure the game creators don't think of things like "what would the drinking age in this world be?" when making them. XD Er, I guess I should've explained about the Tonguetwister Rouge. It's actually lipstick; it boosts your max HP by 4% temporarily. And yes, you can only get it via an SP combo (combine Wheat, Uncooked Rice, and Egg, in that order). Since it's lipstick, I can understand why there would be some joke about the guys using it, but why specifically state "Not for you, Gibari!"? O.o | #3 Dec 04th 2007, 5:43pm . Fan Fan GirlI guess it's not a good idea to let kids drink, but still... in medieval times, didn't people drink water and wine almost interchangeably? I suppose that the Baten Kaitos world isn't exactly medieval (Alfard and the technology of airships being the case in point) though...Lipstick... hahaha... I see what you mean now. Maybe they chose Gibari to pick on because he'd be the least pretty wearing make-up? |
RuingarafAnd also... does Savyna even wear lipstick? XD |
Brenda9241) That is strange, huh? Especially the fact that Mizuti can drink it. I think it would have been better if they hadn't specified a drinking age at all...2) I noticed the orange-tangerine thing, too. I always thought it was weird...I wonder why nobody noticed it when making the game? 3) I never had the item, but I can't believe they singled out just Gibari! That's hilarious! As if it's better for Lyude or Kalas to use it. But...what about Mizuti? |
Strawberry EggsAnd also... does Savyna even wear lipstick? XD Either that, or her lips are just naturally that red. Though I also agree that someone like her wouldn't wear lipstick normally. I never had the item, but I can't believe they singled out just Gibari! That's hilarious! As if it's better for Lyude or Kalas to use it. But...what about Mizuti? Seeing as Mizuti doesn't take off that mask of hers (not completely anyway), she wouldn't be putting on lipstick very often. Also, it probably plays into the fact that you and most of the character don't really know her gender until later. I also see what you mean about Gibari being the least pretty, Fan. Even in the unlikely situattion that Gibari put on lipstick, it would not be a pretty sight. >< It would certainly be less pretty than Lyude or Kalas with lipstick. D: I actually found another big oddity for a few Magnus cards: Silkworm, Ugly Duckling, Swan, Rooster, etc. It is stated more than once that living things cannot be stored in Magnus cards as they become distorted. If this is true though, then what is with these and other cards that feature living animals. How exactly is this possible? Did the folks over at Namco, Monolith Soft, and/or tri-Crescendo just forget about it? Maybe they are distorted in a way but still usable? I don't even know what to make of cards like The Peach Boy and Wonder MOMO... | #7 Dec 10th 2007, 11:26am

RuingarafMaybe they're zombies?| #8 Dec 10th 2007, 12:03pm

Brenda924Hm...that is strange. It's weird that they overlooked that, especially since there is a huge aspect of the game based off of that...maybe they ARE zombies!..haha.And with the Peach Boy, that's an actual person in there! strange...Maybe being in the card is what gave it the ability to sometimes instantly kill something? haha... |
Fan Fan GirlMaybe they were trapped in the Magnus, and are now slowly dying...That doesn't make sense though, because of the whole "distortion" thing... Argh... I don't know. >_< | #10 Dec 10th 2007, 6:47pm
Brenda924...do you know how guilty that just made me feel? You pretty much told me that I'm slowly killing and torturing animals so that I can wake a party member up or something...I am scarred for life...hahaHm...I really have no theories on this one... | #11 Dec 10th 2007, 8:52pm

Brenda924-glares- maybe you'll think twice next time.Kidding! Totally kidding! It's fine. Sad, but fine. So...how exactly do you make them? | #15 Dec 10th 2007, 9:14pm

Strawberry Eggs(Heh, I knew you were. XD)Well if you really want to know...To make Chicken Kebabs you first use a Rooster, Ugly Duckling or Swan card, then use a weak or medium-level Fire Burst (Level 1~4), then use a Paper Fan. That's just terrible... | #16 Dec 10th 2007, 9:19pm
Brenda924Oh, poor ugly duckling!!! It's so innocent and cute! It doesn't deserve to be made into a Chicken Kebab...especially considering the fact that it isn't a chicken. Neither is a swan...Inconsistency! | #17 Dec 10th 2007, 9:23pm
Strawberry EggsWell, I believe is Chicken Kebab is actually Yakitori, a Japanese dish made of grilled pieces of skewered chicken and sometimes veggies and other meats. The word "tori" means bird in Japanese. I guess that's the logic behind using any kind of bird to make the Magnus, not just chicken. But really though, using a living bird, then torching it with a Fire Burst and fanning it is just plain cruel, whether it's an Ugly Duckling or a Rooster! | #18 Dec 10th 2007, 9:42pm
RuingarafHmm.Well, Momotaro isn't really alive because he's a legend, and anything born from a peach isn't really human. Still, I have no explination for the birds. ... ... *munches on a chicken leg* | #19 Dec 11th 2007, 3:33am

Brenda924This is animal cruelty...I wonder if the characters realize when they're scorching a bird alive? | #20 Dec 11th 2007, 6:27am

Strawberry EggsHm, it seems I'm the only one who notices Magnus oddities...Anyway, as I was browsing through the Player's Guide, I noticed the SP Combos to get the item Vanilla Ice Cream...it's actually rather odd, and a little nasty. :P "Good Meat" (Fresh Beef, Bacon, Pork Ribs, etc.)-->Weak or Medium Fire (Fire Bursts lv1~4, Small Fire, Large Fire, etc.)-->Birch Sap Gum = Vanilla Ice Cream or "Good Meat" (Fresh Beef, Bacon, Pork Ribs, etc.)-->Charcoal-->Weak or Medium Fire (Fire Bursts lv1~4, Small Fire, Large Fire, etc.)-->Birch Sap Gum = Vanilla Ice Cream I don't get the logic here...how does using meat get you ice cream exactly? Wouldn't it make much more sense to use Milk? If the end product did indeed look like ice cream, I sure as heck wouldn't eat it if it was made using meat...I mean, I know it's Magnus and not necessarily the actual foods, but the very idea! DX |
Brenda924...meat? Skit time!(Xelha and Kalas are dining alone in Wazn after the game ends) Xelha: Time for dessert! -serves ice cream- Kalas: Thanks! -eats- -finds weird brown lump- -eyes it suspiciously- Xelha: -eating- -notices Kalas' weird look- What's wrong? Kalas: What's this brown thing? Xelha: Oh, that? I think it's beef...or maybe pork. One of the two. Kalas: WHAT?! Xehla: Is something wrong? Kalas: Uh, no...Xelha, is this how you make all your food? Xelha: Well, we make hamburgers and chicken-kebabs in battle Kalas: -thinks meat ice cream is only a Wazn custom- Right...I'm, uh, gonna go visit Melodia for a while. See ya! And the skit is over, haha. I don't know why I chose Xelha (and Wazn), maybe because there's so much ice and snow there? It seems like the perfect ice cream place, haha. But meat/weird flavor ice cream happens in real life--just look at President Madison's wife, Dolly. Her favorite flavor of ice cream was oyster... And I think the reason I don't notice magnus card oddities is because I'm too absorbed with yelling at my TV screen for other inconsistencies, oddities, and things that annoy me (remember Zosma Tower? That's what was happening almost the whole time I played this, especially once I got Mizuti)...haha. |
Strawberry Eggs*Blinks*Bwahahahahaha! XD That skit was awesome, Brenda! Now meat-flavored ice cream I've heard of...but ice cream itself isn't made from meat! It's specifically Vanilla Ice Cream anyway! And I think the reason I don't notice magnus card oddities is because I'm too absorbed with yelling at my TV screen for other inconsistencies, oddities, and things that annoy me (remember Zosma Tower? That's what was happening almost the whole time I played this, especially once I got Mizuti)...haha Meanwhile, I spend time browsing through the guide...guess I shouldn't be surprised that I would be the one to notice them first. :P |
Brenda924Thank you! -bows- haha...Now I kind of want to make meat-vanilla-ice-cream...I wonder if I could pay someone to eat it? Haha... I really want a BK guide now...I will search for it on the internet! Haha... Another thing I think is strange: Why are Wind and Chronos opposites? I would never say that time was the opposite of wind...I would think it would be something more like Wind (air/sky) versus earth... |
Strawberry Eggs...You'd have to pay me a lot to eat something like that. XPAnd yes, the internet is definetly your best bet...I lucked out and found my copy of the strategy guide in a Sam Goody that was going out of business two years ago. Oddly enough, I hadn't even bought the game at the time! I've been wondering about the Wind/Chronos thing for the longest time. While it's only logical that earth would be the opposite of wind(air/sky), perhaps earth wasn't an element in this game becuase people no longer live on the earth (the surface that is?). Sure, the islands are just floating chunks of earth, but they are no longer rooted in the earth surface. Thus having earth as an element wouldn't make much sense to them. Of course, this doesn't explain how time is in place of earth. Time affects wind, but it's not as if wind can affect time much (or air or the sky). The only opposite of time I can think of is space (as in spatial dimensions, not outer space). |
Brenda924How much is a lot? Haha...I, for one, never owned the game. I still don't. My friend lent it to me and I have yet to return it...haha. Yeah, it's so weird...it took me the longest time to realize that Wind and Chronos were opposites. I thought that they were neutral for a while since the others were so obvious (water vs. fire, light vs. dark). Chronos is cool and all, and probably has some of my favorite attacks, but it is not the opposite of wind. When I finally realized they were opposites, I got all mad about it and decided that since they weren't REALLY opposites I'd still use them together. It wasn't until the bosses started getting harder that I decided to end my phase of denial and anger at Namco (instead, I took my anger out in a healthy way by making Lyude go psycho in a story). It makes me wonder if Lightning and Physical are opposites in Origins...I can't tell since they don't have the display screen... |
Strawberry EggsNo less than $5,000 XP. (XD)Never owned it? For shame! (XD) I knew about the Wind/Chronos thing from the beginning since the manual explains it, but yeah, it still makes no sense. :/ It wasn't until the bosses started getting harder that I decided to end my phase of denial and anger at Namco (instead, I took my anger out in a healthy way by making Lyude go psycho in a story). Well, that's certainly one way to do it. XD Huh...I wasn't aware that there were elemental-opposites in Origins as there is in Eternal Wings Anyway, if making Vanilla Ice Cream with meat wasn't enough, you can make Melted Ice Cream by combining "Bad Meat" (Rotten Meat, Charred Meat), fire and Birch Sap Gum. Oo You can just get Melted Ice Cream by letting the Vanilla Ice Cream card sit around for six hours. Wouldn't using rotten or charred meat with fire and sap just get you a nasty mess? Then again, you'd get a nasty mess even if the meat were fresh...Gah, these SP combos just make no sense! | #29 Jan 08th, 1:51pm . Edited Jan 09th, 8:10am

Brenda924How about $0.50?Huh...I wasn't aware that there were elemental-opposites in Origins as there is in Eternal Wings I don't know for sure, but there is water and fire, light and dark, etc., so I thought they'd be opposites. It might not matter, though...I'll look it up somewhere, haha. ...bad meat? Who decided on this? I'm kind of afraid to go to Japan now...haha |

PlasticPinkDaggerIf it's a choice between drinking a bit of alcohol and getting beaten to death by a Cancerite, personally I'd go with the beer. O_o If you want inconsistencies involving alcohol just take a look at Origins! What's one of Guillo's favorites? Mountain apple wine! o_O Guillo say's himself (Itself if you must. I just call him a he! X( ) that he wouldn't be able to tell the difference if the Holoholobird tasted like clucker, and yet somehow according to the magnus description "Life's not worth living without it." And how can he spit seed's at someone anyway!? (Holoholo fruit description.) @_@ I guess we know he idoes/i have some sort of mouth, and possibly ears. (Even if Milly thinks otherwise. She questions how he can eat without a mouth in the boiled egg description. Maybe Milly just doesn’t know anything about Guillo.) About the drinking age though. The Beer magnus makes it inconsistent, or there are different age restrictions for wine and beer. If you visit the pub in Pherkad before Kalas rejoins you, the barkeep will say that you can't have any wine if your a minor, but after Kalas rejoins his age has changed one year to make him 19, and the bar keep will ask how old he is, Kalas will say that he's 19 and the bar keep will let him have the wine! @_@ I suppose that proves it really is just an inconsistency. Oh yeah, and personally, I suppose they just singled out Gibari for the lipstick thing because he's supposed to be the most manly and all. Speaking of Gib though, anyone else find it a bit cold that 20 years after Ladekhan wouldn't let Gibari stay around him in the knights for fear of losing him, Ladekhan's perfectly willing to let him go gallivanting around the continents looking for the end magnus? I know they might not have planed for that back in Eternal Wings or I guess you could say that it's pretty dire circumstances, but still! (Heh, silly thing but am I the only one who’s noticed the fact that a spellchecker will attempt to translate “Malpercio” into “Mailperson”, as well as “Holoholo” into “Hellhole”? I think I agree with that last one actually. O_o) |
RuingarafAs for Guillo, I just stopped asking. A long time ago. LAWL I DIDN'T KNOW THAT. I'm SO trying it now. And yeah, I'd take the beer, too. Maybe it's like Germany. They let minors drink at Oktoberfest. True. Or because Lyude would look good with the lipstick. Well, he can't exactly stop Gibari from looking for the End Magnus, since it's not within his power as a king. *shrug* LAWL, that's great. Wiseman is 'wireman', Guillo is 'guillotine'... Sagi is 'magi'... Almarde is PogoJe- haha, kidding. |
