Topic: X variable, whatever character from BK or BKO XOCs... Cute little bunny, or monster?
Moko-chan:Okay, so... the thing with OCs that there might be some slightly bit of MS -Gasp!- (douses self with holy water)or on the other hand, if they're well written, then it can be good. ^^ But if there was anything "missing" or something, than it's going to be tough to learn about the OC.

Anything else to say? For now I'm brain dead. XD

Hopefully this topic will grow! ^^

Yeah, what I hate is that you have to be REALLY careful about MS-ish stuff. If the OC has any little bad aspect about their past, they pretty much turn into an MS, even if the stuff has happened to other characters or happens often.

^^ Great point! ^^

So... MSs are like all peachy perfect, impossible pasts, "the special one", their history's part of their personality... Like that? Haha! I'm still learning...

Oh! So... is this kind of paring a little kitten, or a "Godzilla"? haha!

MS-traits vary from each book/show/game/etc. Like, in FB, a long-lost Sohma who is the magical rainbow armadillo of the zodiac who was engaged to Kyo/Yuki at birth would be a MS.

Here are some general traits:

Bad past (abuse, rape, etc)

Can fly/read thoughts/etc. (unless most people can do it, like flying in BK)

Depressed

Depressed and needs so-and-so's love to heal her

Most beautiful person to ever walk the earth

If they're just there to date someone (like, one dates Kalas just so that Xelha can date Lyude or something)

Orphan (unless you write it well)

-Her parents hate her, her dad beats her. She ran away with her brother and now her mom calls her and tells her how worthless she is. She takes care of her brother by herself, is on welfare, has to steal, is gang-raped, gets pregnant, dad beats her which results in the pregnancy failing, brother is always scared, parents want to take brother back. She runs away with brother again, meed (insert character) who beats up the dad and gets her mom off her back and saves her and loves her....and the whole time, she was fighting cancer.

Here are some BK-specific ones:

(GS) Can become tangible whenever they want

(GS) Depressed and in love with Kalas

(Usually GS) Can control Malpercio (or something like that)

Most beautiful wings EVER

(for Lyude pairing) was a victim in Op. Sweep

(for Lyude pairing) was a part of Op. Sweep (despite the fact that Savyna was and she isn't a MS)

And stuff like that

Hmm...unfortunately, bad pasts have gotten a bad reputation with OCs because of their associations with Mary Sues, but one of the ways you can tell it's a Mary Sue is if she comes out of her bad past not only mentally whole, but still righteous and oh-so strong for it. Such a BRAVE LITTLE FIGHTER. (/sarcasm)

To make a good OC, you need to have a good sense of how people's minds actually work and how life isn't so convenient as to set things up perfectly so that so-and-so is without a doubt going to love so-and-so. You also need to work past that little egocentric tendancy that makes you believe that if your character acts, speaks, and often looks almost exactly like you, it's okay to put them in your story.

The connection between Kalas and the Spirit always interested me because, firstly, I never saw myself as the Spirit because I never had the proper close connection with Kalas's character that would make me feel like the Spirit, so the Spirit was always a separate character to me. The mistake many MS creators make is that they don't treat the initial bond between Kalas and his Spirit as if it were as close as it probably was. If you think about it, the Spirit never parted with Kalas, but saw him through every day, hour for hour, minute for minute. By the end of the game, the Spirit could probably read that boy like a book, tell you about every quirk, every habit, describe every contour of his face. To be honest, that's a little too intimate to expect an actual romance to spark, because not even close husbands and wives follow each other that much or know each other that completely as a result. Many of the Mary Sues or OC Spirits in general don't act like they've known Kalas that well; some of them hardly act like they've known him for what must've been about a year. (I have my own theories as to what the Spirit as a character would really be like, and this theory is nicknamed "Horatio," but that's a conversation for another topic.)

The Lyude OCs are perhaps harder than Spirit OCs to write because Lyude is probably the most fangirled (yes, I made a new verb) guy in the game, so it is difficult for anyone to take the general prospect seriously. If I were writing a Lyude/OC story, I'd hold off the majority of the romance until I had established a well-balanced and likeable character to not only make her seem real, but genuinely interesting to both Lyude and the reader so that pairing them together wouldn't feel like an amateur puppet master tugging at the strings. And I don't mean "interesting" as in fabulous and uber-magical--try to make her personality at least compliment Lyude's so that they have a balance of personality to make their relationship seem natural. And she doesn't have to be a victim of Op. Sweep, because I'm pretty sure Lyude's had enough grief over that and he doesn't need anymore tragedy in his life with all the blame he puts on himself. How about a nice, gentle girl who will make him a cup of tea and buck him up with a pep talk when he's feeling low?

I dunno. That's my two-and-a-half cents.

*claps* Well done! ^^ Love the point about KalasxSpirit and LyudexOC/LyudexSpirit. ^^

Yeah, OC's can be pretty hard to keep up. I really like doing it with a diary, though. I can control exactly what the readers know and I don't have to follow the girl around and write about all her robotic actions (I would FAIL at that, it's hard enough for me to keep Diary Girl in character as it is, haha).

I never saw myself as the Spirit, either (party because, if I was the Spirit, you can guarantee that things like the Zosma Tower would be solved by just flying there XD ). The way I see the Spirit is strange...I could try to explain, but I don't think anyone cares enough to read a paragraph of me trying to explain something, haha.

I don't think it's all that hard to write a Lyude OC, but I do agree that a lot of fangirls might not step back enough to do it. I'm a HUGE Lyude fangirl, but I'm weird about my fangirlness. I don't want to pair myself with Lyude or give him the "perfect" girl, so I'm a lot more objective about it than most (this is not to say that, if Lyude existed, I would not be trying to be his girlfriend, haha).

Can you...like..be nominated for an award or something for writing this?

I sort of saw myself as the Spirit when I played the game... but only because I got to talk to Kalas and at the end everyone gave me a nice send-off and told me to go find fulfillment in my own world.

Even though I'm a Kalas fangirl, I never pictured myself getting romantically involved with Kalas (that sounds so weird o_o), especially because there is no evidence for Kalas/Spirit in the game. And I'm not a fan of him in THAT way, I just like to see him interact with others because his personality is so interesting. I think that if I knew someone like him for real, I'd probably run away.

Heh, actually, I had that thought just as I was writing it. It's a bad habit of mine, and further proof that my frontal lobe is occupied by more than one tenant.

I always pictured the Spirit as male anyways. Not to sound sexist (I am female, you know), but I can't see Kalas being able to handle having a woman in his head for every second of the day. I couldn't see the Spirit as a teenager either, because the Spirit doesn't strike me as the self-centered sort (not to sound prejudiced, as I am a teenager too). Kalas probably wouldn't stand having someone with the same obsessive and rash tendancies as himself around, just because they'd both annoy each other and one's problems would detract from the other's. The Spirit would be kind of like Xelha, then--a foil to Kalas in his temperment and mental focus, but somehow the same as him on a deeper scale. (Though my story about Arak seems to contradict some of my views here, Arak changes quite a bit shortly after becoming a Spirit to Kalas because he sees his own flaws in him.) In my version, "Horatio" has a particular fascination with the human condition that draws him to Kalas, who, as Larikush (I think) put it, is "too human." I call him Horatio because, in Shakespeare's Hamlet, Horatio was Prince Hamlet's best friend who listened to his troubles and lamentations without complaint, and the character through which the audience could form a connection with Hamlet. "Horatio" (or Arak) learns a lot from Kalas, perhaps far more than Kalas learns from him, and from contemplating his own perdicament--nobody, not even the Spirit, knows what will happen to him after Kalas breaks the bind in the end, but nobody seems to consider that at all in the game.
