SMARTALIENQTAnara Capelina was working busily. It was almost 2 'o clock in the morning, and she still needed to let the lead melt with the mercury before she could add the iron. Making gold was difficult. Now she had to keep a steady hand while she pored in the iron. Just as she was pouring the iron shavings onto the test tube, she heard the telltale sound of footsteps across the stone floor. Startled, her hand jerk, and the contents of the test tube turned black and started to smoke. "Oh, toads," she whispered. The steps were coming closer. "Purple toads." |
Lune of the MoonMizell poked his head around the corner. "Something wrong, Anara?" |
SMARTALIENQT"No, no, nothing's wrong, nothing at all!" stammered Anara in an odd high-pitched voice. Inwardly she kicked herself for making such a pathetic lie. |
Lune of the Moon"Really?" Mizell asked, stepping around the corner. "I thought I heard something. Could Spiderlegs be back?" |
SMARTALIENQT"I wouldn't know," said Anara. "No one ever tells me anything." She sighed. |
Lune of the Moon"She's probably not back. Last I heard, she was going to see the world." |
SMARTALIENQT"Oh." Anara whipped the hand holding her test tube behind her back. "Um... I think I'll go to bed..." she stammered, feeling heat rise into her cheeks. |
Lune of the MoonMizell nodded. "Good night then." He went over to his small bed and wondered what that young homunculus was doing. He smirked, thinking that Spiderlegs had probably been eaten by some dragon by now. If that was true, then good riddence, as that homunculus, still quite young by his species's standards, was no good. Never let her emotions show, was always cold.| #9 Mar 22nd, 1:21pm . SMARTALIENQTAnara all but ran back to her room. Once there, she crushed the ruined experiment under her heel until it was a fine black powder, and swept it away with the other dirt on her floor. Only then did she relax. BIG mistake. |
Lune of the MoonMizell stretched back on his bed. His last thought before falling asleep was that Spiderlegs wasn't likely to ever return, something that he should feel lucky for. |

SMARTALIENQTAnara had had it with her life. All the secrecy and the sneaking around had freaked her out, and she wasn't staying a minute longer. Briskly she threw things into a bag: her test tubes, her ingredients, her clothes and the birthday money she had saved. She was going somewhere. Where exactly... she wasn't sure yet. The Big City looked like it could use an alchemist, or maybe the Deep Ocean or the Valley of the Dragons would welcome a mage. So maybe her plan wasn't completely thought out, but it was a start. She would make it up as she went along, yes, good. One last thing. She walked over to her desk and lit a candle. Taking out a quill and a piece of paper, she started to write. |
Lune of the MoonMizell heard the scratch scratch scratch of a quill. He sat up, looked around, shrugged, and fell back asleep. |

SMARTALIENQTThe Letter Dear Whoever Finds This, I have left the Lab. This may come as a surprise to you, or perhaps you knew it all along, but I want to be an alchemist. While alchemy is not considered ladylike here, I think that it would be best for me and for my parents if I left now, before I am discovered and bring dishonor on my family. You might be able to find me, though. If you can read. My first is in digging, but not sung now My second and third are in creep, but how Could you find the fourth? It's in creep, too Put a space between, new word for you O, how I love the middle of love See? Now put for the seventh an e, like in dove Apricots, apples, and ardent are eighth Last second letter of second teeth --Anara Capelina |

SMARTALIENQTAnara quickly climbed out the window. Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes. She thought of the ocean, how it carried flotsam and jetsam across great distances, and bore migrating animals past entire countries. Focusing on it, she pulled out a dribble of water magic – and disappeared. Deep Ocean, here I come. |
