Topic: The Reefie Manifesto

Hey all. I've spent the last couple of days compiling all of our reasons for why we support Reefie and writing an essay in support of the pairing. The reasons came from all of us, but this not only lists the reasons but gives examples and rationale behind them. This is also posted in the new forum

It's really long (4 pages in MSWord). Please read through. Feel free to give your opinions. I'm willing to change pretty much anything if you think it works better. And so, without further ado, here it is!

Reefie – Reeve Tuesti and Yuffie Kisaragi The Who, the Why, and the How A Treatise on an Underrated Couple

When first presented with this unusual couple, my first instinct was to run for the hills, screaming for the men in white coats to take the strange shippers away for even suggesting the idea. After all, Reeve and Yuffie aren’t exactly in the mainstream as far as the world of Final Fantasy VII goes. But upon further consideration, it became increasingly obvious why the two would work. Many would disagree, citing the obvious differences in personality, the age difference, and a complete lack of romantic canon interaction. However there is something about the two of them that just seems to work.

The characters of Yuffie Kisaragi and Reeve Tuesti/Cait Sith are very similar. Since the focus in canon is generally on other characters (i.e. Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Sephiroth, and Vincent), there is less time to develop the supporting characters. Thus, Yuffie and Reeve (though in this case more Cait) can come off as rather static and almost cartoonish. Cait Sith practically is a cartoon – he’s a cat riding a moogle that speaks in a Scottish accent. Yuffie is cartoonish in that she is really only concerned with stealing materia and her awesome ninja skills. Her speeches concerning herself are often overly dramatic and long-winded, often ending up in clumsiness as she gets carried away and falls over her own feet. But with that cartoonish nature come glimpses of a deeper side.

For Cait, that deeper side is revealed through the actions of his creator, Reeve Tuesti. Despite his beginnings as a department head for Shinra Company, Reeve soon reveals his true nature when he openly disagrees with the manner in which Shinra is behaving towards the planet and towards the rest of the team. He is arrested and detained for his efforts. In the end, once Meteor has destroyed Midgar, it is Reeve whom helps the citizens escape. In Dirge of Cerberus, we see that he has started the Word Regenesis Organization (or the World Restoration Organization) in order to help the people of Gaia rebuild after the events of FFVII and Advent Children.

For Yuffie, it is less obvious. Regardless of her actions in the original game, she proves to be a loyal ally as is proved when she returns to the airship to help in the fight against Sephiroth despite the team’s doubts that she would come back. In Advent Children, she comes to the aid of her allies more than once (read: she saves Barret’s ass). Through the course of the series, she has morphed from an immature, materia-obsessed, self-absorbed ninja to a slightly less immature, materia-obsessed ninja that would do anything to protect her friends.

Reeve and Yuffie balance each other out. Reeve provides the somewhat immature Yuffie with stability and plays the voice of reason when her childish side gets the best of her. In return, Yuffie brings out the fun side of Reeve. She shows him that it’s okay to drop the dignified businessman look every once in a while, especially when among friends.

In addition to the similarities of their characters, their actions in the original game were also similar. Each joined the group under false pretenses and each eventually betrayed AVALANCHE. Reeve used Cait Sith to gain the trust of the team, only to steal the keystone and give it to the Turks, allowing Shinra direct access to the Temple of the Ancients. Yuffie tricked them by stealing their materia. Both eventually regained the trust of the team, but until that happened, they would have something in common. Although it wasn’t shown in canon, it can be assumed that this shared experience would help shape a friendship. Neither had the trust of the team and so would be able to bond over their betrayals.

With the possible exceptions of their betrayals, neither character has a skeleton in his or her closet. With each of the other possible pairings, the other character involved has some sort of past event or person haunting their present. These skeletons keep the characters from moving on and enjoying the present. The most common example would be pairing Yuffie with Vincent. Until the end of Dirge, Vincent is far too involved in his guilt over the death of his beloved Lucrecia. A part of him will always pine for the late scientist. He’s not capable of being in a relationship as his demons will always haunt him. Even in the end of Dirge, when he seems to be released from his guilt, it is not Yuffie who is there waiting for him at Lucrecia’s resting place. It is Shelke. There is also the small matter of the aging process. Eventually, Yuffie (and even Shelke) will die, leaving Vincent alone to wallow in the grief of the death of three different women (Lucy, Yu, and Shelke).

The same principle occurs when Cloud is paired with the ninja. He is stuck on Aerith and is consumed with guilt over her death. Not to mention his stick-in-the-mud attitude would quickly grate on Yuffie’s nerves as her immaturity would grate on his. Though some claim that Yuffie and Aerith had similar personalities and that would draw Cloud to the ninja, it just wouldn’t happen. They really don’t have a whole lot in common. Their personalities are so different that even the phrase “opposites attract” would be a stretch. Because even opposites have at least something in common that attracts them to one another.

Another common pairing is Reno and Yuffie. The two characters are practically the same person. Reno is the male version of Yuffie and Yuffie is the female version of Reno. There would be a severe lack of maturity in the relationship. Eventually it would go sour because neither would step up to the plate when a situation that called for a mature adult decision arises.

As for some of the others, Cid is more like an uncle type figure to Yuffie. Not to mention he’s married to Shera. Barret is just…no. Tifa is clearly in love with Cloud. Not to mention that neither woman has ever hinted that she is bi or homosexual.

The fact that Tifa is clearly in love with Cloud is the same reason she and Reeve would never work. Even if they started something, he would always come in second with her and Reeve deserves better than that. Elena, though single, is hung up on Tseng. And he can’t be paired with Aerith because she’s dead. As far as Yaoi, Reeve has never given any indication that he prefers men. Unless you count the fact that he plays with dolls. But really, Cait doesn’t count as a doll. I mean really, when was the last time you saw Ass-Kicking Barbie? Reeve builds robots that kill things. That’s the definition of manliness.

It is revealed in Yuffie’s character profile for Dirge of Cerberus that it was she who is the glue that holds the team together. It is she who keeps in touch with Cid and Reeve. This indicates that Yuffie tries very hard to maintain the friendships formed during the original game. The idea that there isn’t a lot of canon interaction between Reeve and Yuffie is refuted in her bio. Not only is she the one who speaks to Cait Sith the most in the original game (though a lot of it is bad mouthing), but she is the one who forces the team to keep in touch. She also works very closely with Reeve in Dirge of Cerberus due to his position in the WRO and her willingness to help not only Reeve but also Vincent.

Politically, they are an incredible match. Yuffie is the heir to the throne of Wutai and Reeve is the president of the incredibly influential WRO. Godo seems like the type of man to play the game of politics. He wouldn’t be above using his daughter as a political pawn if it meant securing a strong global position for Wutai. Reeve himself is also very politically minded and understands the influence Wutai has over the western part of Gaia. Since his organization has influence over the eastern part of the continent, it would make sense to marry Yuffie. Of course this means that initially he would be using Yuffie, but Reeve is first and foremost a businessman. If given the opportunity to change the world by marrying a royal with whom he shared no romantic inclination, he would more than likely do so.

Cait Sith is the only evidence we have that Reeve is anything other than a completely serious, business-minded, caring but otherwise nondescript individual. If one were to take Cait Sith out of the picture, that outlet for any craziness would disappear. But because Cait Sith does exist (which is strange considering what he is: a robot cat that rides a moogle), we can see that Reeve obviously does have at the very least an eccentric side. The man created a moogle riding cat bot that dispenses strange fortunes at the Golden Saucer. This eccentricity could be considered just that: a strange quirk. But let us take it a step further. It could also be considered an outlet for a man who, at heart, is a jokester, someone who loves a good prank and tells corny jokes, but his penchant for mischief and laughter must be hidden due to the serious nature of his work.

In Dirge of Cerberus especially because of his work as the leader of the World Regenesis Organization, he is responsible for the lives of hundreds of people. Not to mention the added stress of an underground organization trying to resurrect a weapon that would destroy the world. And even during the original game it is hinted that he was constantly trying to be the voice of reason and compassion in the Shinra Corporation when Scarlett, Palmer, and Heidegger were in charge. That kind of stress would cause anyone to act in a serious manner. So Reeve, rather than creating a robot that easily blended into its surroundings came up with Cait, a robot that practically screams “Look at me!”

Regardless of Cait’s eventual purpose – to spy on AVALANCHE – there is evidence supporting that this was not why he was originally created. The Golden Saucer was not the first time in the original game that Cait Sith appeared. He already existed before the destruction of Sector Seven in Midgar, an event that occurs long before the team enters the Saucer. He can be seen in the Honeybee Inn when Cloud and Aerith are working toward rescuing Tifa from Don Corneo. Right next to the lover’s room a Cait Sith doll can be seen next to an old couple talking. His existence in Sector Five proves that Cait had been made long before he was commissioned to spy on the team. The old couple, who call themselves Grandma and Grandpa, talk about their son who works at Shinra. The presence of Cait suggests that they could be Reeve’s parents. They are under the impression that their son has rented them a luxury apartment, but it is in fact a brothel. This is either an inside joke on the part of the game’s makers or a demonstration of Reeve’s (somewhat twisted) sense of humor. Either that or it proves that he’s a perverted voyeur, using his robot to spy on people doing the horizontal tango.

Cait’s existence at the point in the game gives the idea that Reeve created him as an outlet for the side of him that he doesn’t show at work – his childish side. Later, it was simply a convenience for Shinra to use an existing robot to spy AVALANCHE. Cait’s very existence proves that Reeve has a slightly unconventional sense of humor.

It’s also possible that Reeve could use the cat bot to get back at Yuffie for pranks she may or may not have pulled on the man himself, all the while maintaining his dignity. Because while it is common knowledge to the members of AVALANCHE and quite possibly the Turks that Reeve is the creator and controller of Cait, it may not be as common to the rest of the world, thus making it possible for Reeve to use him to exact revenge on the tricky ninja.

Some could argue that Reeve didn’t actually create Cait Sith; rather he simply controlled the robot. However, as the former Head of Urban Development for Shinra and the architect that designed Midgar, it isn’t a big stretch to think that he could easily have designed and built an animatronic cat, easily controlled from the safety of Shinra Headquarters.

Reeve and Yuffie are not together in canon, but they easily could be. They are an unusual pairing given their age difference, but they truly are compatible. While they are not everyone’s cup of tea, they make sense to us.
