-lady-harkness-Topic: Darkly Dreaming Dexter and General
I'm reading the book at the moment and it's really good. We're only just about to finish series one in ENgland but I want to know what people think about Dexter |
Aquatic ButterflyHaha Well obviously if we're in this forum, we think Dexter's awesome amazing super duper fantastic fabulous magnificently fun! What specifically do you want to know? Do I like the plot? Yes! Do I like the characters? Yup! Do I like Dexter? More like love!! It's an amazing show, and if you're just about to finish the first season, I envy your ignorant bliss at not knowing all the twists and turns yet. It's a great ending, and sets itself up nicely for the second season which is equally thrilling. |

sakuuyaOkay, lady-h, listen to me very carefully: DO NOT READ DEXTER IN THE DARK. Dearly Devoted is oklay, but Dark was literally painful to read. It's like Lindsey died and was secretly replaced by a double who'd only heard plot summaries of the first two novels, but had never even read them and didn't particularly care for their fairly realistic style. it's lucky that the TV series isn't dedicated to reproducing the plots of the novels. Really. With any luck, Lindsey will listen to the pained disgust of his fanbase and completely ignore Dark in the fourth book, but... you never know, I guess. |
Aquatic ButterflyHahaha yah, it's funny that even though I KNEW intellectually that Dexter in the Dark was bad as I was reading it, I still enjoyed it. Maybe its because I'm used to Buffy the Vampire style stories, but its definitely an interesting read. But I'm with you sakuuya...I'm going to forget that its canon and pretend that it was an elaborate fanfiction with a pretty hardcover and incredibly unrealistic plot. Hopefully Dexter by Design will ignore it. |

-lady-harkness-It's the last episode tonight and i can't wait. I'm behind on the story but am still surprised how unlike the book the series actually is. That doesn't stop both of them being really good. |
-lady-harkness-Oh my god! Watched it last night and it was excellent. Can't wait for more |
yayme2012Yes, yes, season 2 IS excellent... plus available on iTunes. Dexter in the Dark was just... meh. I liked where he was going with the whole "it" thing, explaining the Dark Passenger, and then he screwed over the plot. Argh. One thing I hope Jeff Lindsay will focus on in Dexter by Design is the kids. The idea of him training them is too cool... |
MidnitergrlYeah, I agree. It was the only Dexter book that I read (unfortunately I haven't even seen the series) but I could already tell that Dexter wasn't and shouldn't be like that. He had too much supernatural crap. It's as if he wrote a fanfic for himself or something. XD And yeah, I hope he does focus on the kids in the next one. That would be awesome. |
yayme2012Oh my geezums, I think I read the worst Dexter-based fics ever. Look up: www.fanfiction.net/~lamospadamo They're... awful... |
sakuuyaDid that little idiot flame you for your reviews? I definitely got a flame. |
yayme2012You kidding me? The loser didn't respond to either of my outright flames... :( |
sakuuyaWhat a jerk! If you're gonna flame one person who tells you that your story is crap, you should flame everybody! That's just common courtesy. |
yayme2012No kidding! And I was meaner than you were, too... I really want to have a sit-down with him and criticize him so he gets it through his thick skull... |
Moi and KyugimaI READ THE FICS!!! Ouch... I wish I didn't... Hi, I'm Moi. I've only watched up to the 4th episode of the first season and I've never read the books but I'm HOOKED!!! Dexter is so hawt! In a psycho killer kinda way... What do you peoples prefer the books or the TV series? ~Moi |
sakuuyaThe TV series is better, but I prefer Lindsay's Dexter characterization. I think he was softened a little too much for the show. I mean, I understand why they did it (to make him a more palatable protagonist), but TV!Dexter has more of a capacity to care for other people than his book counterpart, which makes his sociopathy less believable. Other than that, though, the show kicks the books' ass. Really. The loss of first-person narration means that all the supporting characters are more fleshed-out, and the plotting is generally tighter. Not to mention that DitD definitely doesn't exist in the TVverse, which is wonderful. |
lalababeei think the book was better, because Rudy didn't die, but if he didn't die in the show, the shows would be better. I wish Dex would have just killed Deb, and gone away with oh-so-sexii Biney. Yea, i like the character Deb, but Rudy actully got Dexter, and if Deb knew, she would turn against him. I'm on the fourth episode in the second season, and i read all three books and waiting for the fourth, and i think dexter kicks butt. i love how he kills only serial killers, and i cant wait for the third season of shows to vome out, since i just watched the trailer for it and it rocks. LOL, Dexter is the bomb. |
sakuuyaBut see, if Dexter HAD killed Deb, it would have robbed the character of his sympathetic nature, and thereby ruined him. I DON'T like Deb very much, but given the extreme importance Dexter places on his moral code, saving her was really the only option. And while Dexter/Brian is always way hot, it would be a terrible move for the canon. Some things should just stay within the realm of fandom. |
lalababeeOh, of course the whole Dexter/Brian thing SUCKS. I love the whole Rita thing, and I love how he accidently propesed to her. I do wish he had left with Brian, though, because Brian is his brother and he accepted him, whereas Deb wouldn't. |
sakuuyaHe couldn't have left with Brian without killing Deb (because Brian wouldn't have let him), and he couldn't kill Deb for the reason I explained above. It was a hard choice for him, but he made the only decision he could have. His love for Deb, an essentially innocent person 99.9% likely to reject him if she knew, means more to him than no longer being alone. A lot of it, I think, comes down to familliarity: He's used to having Deb in his life, and he's used to not having anyone he can talk to more than once. As a character, Dex is very into stability, so even from that angle it makes sense that he did what he did. |
lalababeeYea, that's true...i just wish he hadn't killed Rudy. |
sakuuyaHmm. My fangirl mind and my intellegent-viewer mind are in disagreement about that part. The fangirl says, fuck yes they shouldn't have killed him off! He was hot, and Brian/Dexter is the sexiest 'cest this side of Heroes. The intellegent viewer says that Brian served his purpose as a character and plot device, and getting rid of him was a wise move, as bringing him back would be gimmicky. Dex went through a full arc of feelings for Biney, and concluded that he couldn't have him in his life (and keep in mind that Dexter didn't kill him until AFTER he'd tried to kill Deb again). I'm inclined to follow the latter, because I can always find good Brian/Dexter slashfic if I'm jonesing for it, but once your canon is fucked, it's fucked forever. *coughDexterInTheDarkcough* |
lalababeeIn the book, he stayed alive. He also came back in the second season, but as Dexter's imagination. I have the fics where Dexter and Rudy are a couple, but i'd love one as them brothers. Like i said b4, i love the whole Rita thing with the kids. I know, I know, Rudy needed to die, but still...i think they could have done something else with him... |
lalababeeoops, i meant to say I hate the fics where dexter and rudy are a couple, not i have. sorry! dude...i 3 dexter...33 |
