Topic: Writer's Block, Anyone?
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know any good cures for writer's block, especially related to fanfic? Suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks, D.

I have been wondering that myself too. When that happens to me, I just have to clear my mind for a while (distance myself from writing) and try and read good fics or books. It helps me 'unblock' my mind sometimes.... but sometimes it doesn't... so, I don't know. It would be good to read what other authors do, too.

I hope i was helpful...

I've found listening to music helps me. For Wicked fics then the soundtrack is an obvious choice but other music works better sometimes because a lyric will jump out at me and give me an idea for something to write. Reading helps to of course. Also try picking something, a word or an object and write a story around it (kind like a challenge) that generally gets my mind working and in "story mode", it's even better when you can incorporate it to the story you're working on.

Personally, I've found that thinking of anything BUT writing the story I'm on a block about, is a good idea.

You still have to write through the block, but see if you can't get into a new work, a new bit of poetry or even a script for a TV show, anything that will keep you writing WITHOUT pressuring yourself about the story you're blocked over.

Blocks go away, and come back, and it just happens, and writing through it has worked best for me.

Also, go walking. Ride a bike, do something to work your body, which will at once work and relax your mind.

And there's no difference between writer's block 'as it pertains to fan fiction' and any other kind of block. Blocked is blocked. Because writing is writing, whether we do it well or often or profusely, and blocks just happen.

Hope your block has let up since you posted your question. IF not, try to keep writing anyway, and see if the other story begins to take form again... it will.

Wow, thank you. That helps a lot. The block that I wrote about above has gone away, but for that's great advice for cases in the future. Thanks again, and I'll be sure to use your solutions the next time I'm stuck.

I've heard a really wierd one that workd occasionally. It's really weird, but i heard that yelling completly random words help, and that if you yell pointless words that dont have to do with anythingmight heal writters block, but then again, thats pretty rare. I've also heard that reading other fanfics, listening to music, and other things like that(that have already been posted.) Hope this helps!

Hee hee, even if the yelling thing doesn't cure block I'm going to do it anyway, I mean how many other times can you (semi) legitimately yell random things? :D

Kennedy hit it spot on with the best cures for writer's block- those are the best 'cures', and very similar to my own...*golf claps*

I just leave the story be, and listen to music. I often find that writing a one-shot in the same catergory (ie; Wicked) as your 'stuck' story, helps alot, because it helps keep your mind on the topic, while not stressing it.

Me, I'm not stuck. I have nine stories, only two of which are complete. I have big plans for one of them, but I may get shot. It's hard to write, but I still have chapters upon chapters for it before it gets worn out. Then I shall go back to "If I'd Known", then "City of Emeralds: Elphaba". For now, "A New Boy at **" and "It All Started at **" are my moving ones. I always have one moving, that's why I have so many. It helps. I'm just having trouble with "A New Boy", but that's not to be talked about. No giving away big plot things for me...

this post is for Annibelle White. I read all your stories, ecxept for 'From Elphaba to Fae' I think you should finish one, then move on to the others. I mean, you have people reading your fics (I'm waiting for Haunted to continue) but then you stop and start other ones, leaving your stories behind. I think you should finish a story first, then go to another one.

So far, thats all I have to say.

First of all, Mademoiselle, I am guessing, from the fact that you have read everything BUT "From Elphaba to Fae: The Lost Years" (which I happen to think is my best story), that you have, perhaps, a Fiyeraba complex? It's okay, I have one, too. That reminds me, any Fiyeraba complex crazies, come on over to my site (the link is posted in my profile). I made a nice little topic about us, lol! You can share fanfics there, too, and get Wicked info.

Okay, no more advertising for me!

Second of all, the only way I can write is to have so many moving at one time. It helps me, for some odd reason. I know it irks other people, and I'm sorry. But there would be times I'd be writing NOTHING at all or writing one of the newer ones. I'd rather be writing something while waiting to figure out how to move things along. It's just easier for me that way. Many of the ones I've left hanging will come after I get through this big thing with "A New Boy at **" and a few planned things I have to write for "It All Started at **". I was actually just recently thinking about how I'd update "Haunted", but it's not the first on my list after those two, unfortunately. The next two that will be updated (and it might STILL be awhile) are "If I'd Known" and "Elphaba: City of Emeralds". Then, I do have some ideas for the others, too. I apologize for making people wait. Would you rather have one good fic that gets stuck or a bunch of fics, one or two good, that at least one is moving at a time? It's the only way for me, and I'm sorry.

Well, a good way to help writer's block (it works for me, anyway) is to pick up my iPod and get away from the computer for a few minutes, also, eat/ and or drink something. It's been medically proven that writer's block and other forms of forgetfulness can be caused by hunger or dehydration.

Hope it helps!

I listen to music (for wicked I listen to Idina Menzel's albums and Wicked Soundtrack) because like it was said before, lyrics jump out and give ideas.

I also think about the story before sleep because I think that's my most open minded state of mind and sometimes idea's come in my dreams or just appear in my mind before sleep, inwhich I jump out of my bed, attempt to find paper, and write it down before I loose it.

I also skim through the book/tv show/movie (what ever it's based on), or other books/tv shows/movies that somewhat remind me of the fic and ideas come from there, like how I'm reading Son of a Witch and it helped for my fic Fallen Under Your Spell. Also I have the play script for Wicked which I refer to from time to time.

I also read other people's fics and get ideas there too, which was also stated before.

But sometimes other people's way work and sometimes they dont, so try a few different things and find what's right for you.

Hoped This Helped :)

Well, whenever I'm stuck (I'm stuck right now, actually, on a different story for "Wicked" which I have not posted yet), I do the traditional stuff... I read, I go bicycling, I work on other stories, I listen to music...

Or sometimes I just go and start writing another part of the story - like if I'm stuck on chapter 15, I'll move ahead and start writing chapter 23 or something.

I have the ideas in my head and I know what I want to happen, it's just a matter of writing it down PROPERLY.
