![]() Short answer "no". I also find their organisation of...everything confusing. But they boast on having better all-female admins, so they shouldn't mind you emailing them a question. Unless they wrote a FAQ. That's where the question will surely be answered if it's there. 2/16/2011 #1,201 |
![]() Is impossible for us to get a Trollingo topic? Some people here can't speak troll, and it would be fun to have a place to put the translations. 2/17/2011 #1,202 |
![]() Is impossible for us to get a Trollingo topic? Some people here can't speak troll, and it would be fun to have a place to put the translations. There's a "Slanguage" topic buried somewhere. That might work. 2/17/2011 #1,203 |
![]() Hm, that works too! Thank you! 2/17/2011 #1,204 |
![]() I have read somewhere that the American author George R. R. Martin does not allow any of his intellectual property to be used in fanfiction. However, recently i noticed his A Song of Ice and Fire series is a category on this site. Can I safely post under that category, without fear of any consequences, even if my information regarding the authors stance on fanfiction is correct? 2/18/2011 #1,205 |
![]() If George R. R. Martin or his legal advisors contact FFN, the entire category will disappear, your story included. On previous occasions, stories were removed but authors were not banned. Provided your information is correct, posting such a story on a public website poses a risk to you as well as the archive. In this case, you know explicitly you are going against the writer's wishes. 2/18/2011 #1,206 |
![]() Thank you, Lord Kelvin, for the reply. 2/18/2011 #1,207 |
![]() Although I'm not sure how much of a question this counts as, I've found a link I believe other users might find interesting. The trouble is that I'm not sure whether it belongs in Useful Links, as it doesn't pertain to writing, and it most certainly isn't a read/video/music recommendation either. I was wondering where I should post it, if at all. :/ Link: http://www.wherecreativitygoestoschool.com/vancouver/left_right/rb_test.htm 2/18/2011 . Edited 2/18/2011 #1,208 |
![]() Put it under useful links. :) /should change that thread a bit 2/18/2011 #1,209 |
![]() What happens if your account is suspended? Can people still PM you? Reach you? How can you tell if someone else's account is suspended? How long do suspensions last? *just realized I know nothing about suspension* 2/19/2011 #1,210 |
![]() I was suspended once, but it was years ago and the forums weren't around. I couldn't post any stories for a certain period of time; I believe it was no longer than a week. Anyway, I got a nice warning from FFN admins that if I violated the Guidelines again, my account would be terminated. I don't believe that anyone was able to tell that I was suspended simply by looking at my profile. Not sure if suspensions still work along those lines now, but I'm sure it doesn't have quite as much of an impact now that people have several accounts registered with different emails. [/really going to sleep now] 2/19/2011 #1,211 |
![]() How long do suspensions last? From two days to six months, and perma. When FFN wants to get rid of you the easy way, all your accounts are deleted. Even if you have 20 of those. 2/20/2011 #1,212 |
![]() How would Fanfiction know about the other twenty accounts? Is it just solely through the IP address you use? 2/20/2011 #1,213 |
![]() Is it just solely through the IP address you use? That, or an open proxy or you know that you are tracked whenever you click something on FFN. If someone has a disruptive agenda, it shows even on a sock. 2/20/2011 #1,214 |
![]() How does and IP address work? Does it change when I use different computors? 2/22/2011 #1,215 |
![]() How does and IP address work? In simple language... They're like name tags. Most of the time, people will know who you are if you tell them your full name. Every time your computer connects to a website, it tells your IP address while receiving the website's IP address. Without such an introduction, neither you nor the website would know which machine they're communicating with. Just like with a real name, it's possible to tell where your computer is from and who registered it. Does it change when I use different computors? Yes. However, the IP is attached not to the computer like, say, your Windows serial number, but to the connection. If you connect your broadband to a different computer, chances are the IP will be the same. 2/22/2011 #1,216 |
![]() Right...so the admins couldn't exactly delete all twenty accounts now, could they? 2/22/2011 #1,217 |
![]() Who's to say that half of those accounts don't belong to somebody else who shares the IP address? Highly improbable, considering such accounts are created in a torrent and there are few Saudi Arabians on the site. 2/22/2011 #1,218 |
![]() Highly improbable, considering such accounts are created in a torrent and there are few Saudi Arabians on the site. Excluding certain countries, Kelvin. 2/22/2011 #1,219 |
![]() Highly improbable, considering such accounts are created in a torrent and there are few Saudi Arabians on the site. What do Saudi Arabians have to do with sharing computers/connections? There are 3 computers in my house, all using the same wi-fi connection. I know many people who access the internet through public computers such as libraries. Additionally there are plenty of people who have one computer that is shared by several members of the household. Seems to me that the idea of shared IP addresses isn't so improbable after all. 2/23/2011 #1,220 |

![]() Long story short, there is a finite number of IPv4 addresses, and some parts of the world got a smaller share than others. One of the countries in the Middle East has a grand total of 13 IP addresses. If trolls originated from there, one classic way of dealing with them would backfire. Thankfully, that's not the case and FFN does not depend on the Middle East for survival. As for IP sharing, letting other people use your internet connection for whatever reason poses a risk you should be aware of. In the end, the admin watches his own backyard, so you should watch yours. Tracking methods implemented by Google (present on FFN) as well as IPv6 can minimise damage a user's carelessness would cause, but your integrity remains your primary concern. Various free service providers tend to tie your hands rather than their own when you sign up. 2/23/2011 #1,222 |
![]() How's it going, LU? 2/23/2011 #1,223 |
![]() How's it going, LU? 230, 590 posts and counting indicate that it's going pretty well, thank you very much. 2/23/2011 #1,224 |

![]() Is anyone (other than myself) watching what's going on in Libya and Egypt? I am. Interesting stuff. Not watching it right at this moment though. 2/26/2011 #1,227 |
![]() Which thread would you like to see pinned if we get an extra pin spot? 2/28/2011 #1,228 |
![]() My vote's on the complaint thread. Lots of traffic falls in there, from both inside and outside the forum. 2/28/2011 #1,229 |
![]() The previous question is still open. I have another one. We have three locked threads that take up pin space. Read Before Posting Elsewhere, Forum Directory and Meet the Sexy Bitches. All of them have exactly one post. That is an inefficient way of handling things and a newbie is forced to make three separate clicks to get to know the forum. This delays the time when a newcomer actually starts participating in the forum. Suggestion: combine them. Question: do you agree with them being combined into two or one thread? If so, do you have any ideas on how to make it most functional? 3/01/2011 #1,230 |
