Serenity sat in the cave, smiling at the dragon who watched her silently. "Look, Shadow, I figured out a new trick!"

He looked at her from where he lay down, his black scales glistening slightly from the candlelight that seemed to float around the room, the candles unseen.

She concentrated silently, raising up her hands and making a face, her eyes closed as she focused, struggling with it. At first, nothing happened, but then blue sparks flittered around her hands, an orb of blue shimmering light appearing. It shaped into a star and she dared to open her eyes, relaxing slightly as she grinned. The star disappeared from her hands. "Dammit. D:"

"Amusing trick, Princess," the Dragon said, glancing at the cave entrance. He couldn't help but get the feeling that there was someone out there.

Matt stood near the opening, hidden between a few rocks. He had squeezed in there after he had followed the Princess. It was a new job. A new assignment from the Queen. Find out where her daughter, the Princess, would disappear to in the middle of the day and keep her safe. Drag her away and back to the castle if necessary. Now he watched as a faint glow of sun reflected off of something gold and shining. He heard the deep timbre voice of something he could barely see, it was far too dark for him to make out the shape. He didn't say a word, just sank into a crouch, keeping his sword tight in his hand, still sheathed but at the ready and kept out of the glare of the sun behind his back so it wouldn't catch.

Serenity stood up and climbed up onto Shadow's shoulder, cautiously reaching out and hugging his head. This was a first. She half expected him to burn her. "Thanks for getting me those books."

"A small price to pay for the company of a princess. Much less of a hassle since I don't have to kidnap you."

"Isn't kidnapping princesses a bit sexist?"

"I'll have you know I alternate between kidnapping Princesses and Princes, and it just happened to be time for a Princess!"

"..." She giggled.

When he saw how high the Princess became and how the lights seemed to brighten he noticed the being. A Dragon. She was hugging a Dragon. Matt blinked. When the Princess didn't pull away or yelp or any of the such he stayed where he was.

Sere then let go and slid off of his back, pulling her hair up into a newspaper-boy-like hat, smiling. She looked just like a boy in her attire, except for her feminine face and a piece of hair hanging out of the hat. "I'll see you again tomorrow, Shadow."

"Good bye, Serenity." Shadow watched as she left, his eyes stuck on the entrance. While it might have looked like he was watching her leave, he was really looking for this intruder he sensed so near.

Matt waited until she was about twenty feet away before sliding behind another rock and following as silently as he could. He continued to duck silently behind trees and rocks.

"Good evening, Alex!" one of the villagers cheerfully greeted the 'boy' who ran by.

'He' smiled at them and nodded silently, running towards the exit of the village on the road that led to the capitol.

"Bless that boy's heart," one of the women shook her head. "I hope he finds a voice one day."

"Actually, I think he chooses to stay silent. I read that sometimes people get scared so bad, they never talk again," a smart-alec girl bragged to the other children.

Matt stopped following so silently. In truth he had worn his normal clothes and for a moment had paused to put the sword on his back and covered by a large fur jacket that covered the shining blade. He continued to follow 'Alex', as the Princess was so called in this place, but at a more normal pace. He was newer so he didn't much worry about Princess Serenity recognizing him.

After a few moments, Alex stopped running. The two were on a road, thick forest surrounding it. He silently stepped into the shadows, hiding among the leaves, disappearing completely from sight.

Matt didn't stop, he continued to walk slowly, pretending to look through a pack while actually surveying the forest around him to see any hint of where the Princess was.

A small rustle of leaves came, but a rabbit came running out of them.

Alex held his breath, nearing him from behind before asking quietly, "What are you doing with a sword on your back, sir?"

Probably the most stupid thing Sere had ever done in her life. Here was this guy who had been tailing her since the village and he had a weapon and she was just standing there instead of hiding.

"To protect myself." Matt answered, unsurprised by the 'boy' he was glad that the handle was hidden. If it wasn't the crest of the Capitol would be given away.

"Against me? There's no one here and there's no need for that. The only trouble is the occasional goblin, and they're extremely weak as it is."

Matt shrugged, "Thieves."

"You don't look rich enough."

"Thieves don't care. You have clothes on your back and a possible money pouch you're a target."

"Let me see your sword, please?"

"Why?"

"So I can tell you how good qualitied it is. It'd only take a second. If it isn't that well, I could recommend you to a good blacksmith."

"I know it's quality. I made it." He wasn't lying.

"May I take a peek? Please?" he inched towards the sword.

"No." Matt stepped back. He didn't want to be found out just yet. He'd rather that be on his own terms.

He pouted. "Oh, c'mon! I'm female so there's no worrying of me being a thief or anything! I'm not some thief in hiding!" he took off his hat, her hair falling to her shoulders.

"I know." he shrugged. "I'd prefer not to show you my sword."

"Well of course you'd know, you've been following me this entire time!" she got frustrated, throwing her hat to the ground. I think I've read about offensive and defensive fighting styled magic... I wonder if I'd be able to attempt it...

"You shouldn't ruin your things Princess." he bent over, picking up the hat and placing it on her head before stepping back.

"Okay then, father," she muttered, sulking and stomping off the way she had been going. "AND STOP FOLLOWING ME!"
